Options for Large Dolby Vision Playback Rips to a 77C1

Hi Guys just wanted to gather your thoughts and or ideas, currently I've got a 77C1 with an amp and high end speakers and a very old media pc (2nd gen I5) that's about to die I have a lot of 4K rips on it and I would either watch them through the media pc (1030) card which did the trick but the TV wouldn't detect if the source had HDR or DV etc. I did use the 77C1 and browse to the media pc and watch it that way but some files I get the audio cannot be played or not supported error and some files for some reason just did not work or would drop out constantly but doing this way it did enable HDR or DV.

So Options:

Do I get a cheap refurb Dell Optiplex 3040, i5-6500, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD $229
Move my files to my gaming pc which has 8400 I5, 16GB ram etc and go the plex route (still possible to get a 8700 for about $200 to upgrade also)
Get a dedicated media player like the Nvidia Shield that could pull files from my gaming pc and play them with HDR DV etc
Other ideas ?

  • Nvidia Shield Pro, lower power consumption, always works. Easy to use remote.
Only negative is their latest bios update which cause issues with PLEX, new update coming soon apparently or already released?. I haven't updated to it yet.
And some complaining about google ads, that doesn't worry me.

  • Can a PC even pass a DV signal to the TV? As far as I know DV requires a license fee to be paid by the player as well and the TV manufacturer, its why Sony doesn't even have DV for its streaming apps on PS5 despite their new TVs supporting it.

Windows supports HDR10 natively and that's about it. Some games use DV but those are full screen applications.

I think you are better off using a Shield TV with DV - Atmos support on the box and avoiding headaches.

  • Tagging this. Curious if you can pass Dolby Vision to the TV and True HD audio streams to the receiver.

  • Just get a Shield

  • AMD RADEON 6400 looks suitable! (https://www.amd.com/en/products/graphics/amd-radeon-rx-6400)
HDMI 2.1 VRR, FRL, Low profile, Cheap, No extra power connector required, but has no AV1 decoding.
The Sapphire PULSE AMD Radeon RX 6400, runs cooler than the XFX version and is about $275.

I have the same TV as you and a similar problem. Old hardware HTPC. Similar source material.

So ended up putting my Hdd's into my gaming desktop that has a 6C 8400 intel and a 1080 and thats powerful enough for Plex to support .264 and .265 and also Dolby Vision files it now finally supports have streamed a 40gb Latest Spiderman in 4k DV and it worked perfectly

      • I wondered what you did.
If you feed the need for 4k and full colour….
Do consider the HDMI 2.1 Card I mentioned.

Will do if I ever build a media PC again 👍 planning to go a 3080 when prices come down to $1k so I can hook my gaming PC up on the weekends and finally play cyberpunk that's my dream goal

      • Not sure why people feel the need for that much horsepower. NAS + Shield Pro, using Plex, streams 4K remuxes perfectly fine in my house

It's just direct playback, so why need a 1080 with the power draw?

        • It all existing gear.. saves me buying a shield and then a NAS and it's really only used for 4k DV movies every now and again

  • The Shield / Shield Pro only have HDMI 2.0b with HDCP 2.2
    No HDMI 2.1 !!!
Maybe their next model will have HDMI 2.1 ???

The shield is pretty old now 2019 I believe and is probably due for a refresh soon to support higher fps streaming on new Tv's
