Return Airfares Capped for Regional WA Residents

ABC is reporting:
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-03-31/regional-airfares-cap…

Capped airfares for residents in regional parts of the Western Australia will come into effect from July 1, Premier Mark McGowan has announced. People living within 1,000 kilometres of Perth will pay a maximum of $199 each way, and those in more distant parts of the state will have their flights capped at $299.

The caps only apply to return flights starting in the regions, and fulfil an election promise.

I think this is a great scheme and really help those living in regional WA. Perhaps could be rolled out in other areas of the country.

It is great and has been around for a while, it's been in place up north for a while when Mcgowan subsidised Broome flights to get people flying again.

unfortunately i feel this model is dated and allows airlines to pump their prices again.
Yes i don't have a solution, but i feel government subsidies will quickly result in inflated gross prices. Much like childcare.

I'd look at tax/tariff offsets for operating these routes rather than straight up subsidies/grants

    • You are probably correct re the subsidies/grants, but McGowan won the last election with this as one of the promises, so I suppose he can deliver it anyway he wants to.

Someone else may already know, but I thought there were some subsidies for transport to some areas of the country. Tasmania 'enjoys' a freight equalisation scheme from memory; maybe other remote areas also have something similar. Expand that to residents, and I think would be great.

That is news worthy OP .
I've enjoyed McClown out of the news . Maybe it has something to do with 10K Covid cases daily there .

The COVID case numbers look bad across the country.
I'm thinking that McGowan is not in the MSM on the east coast as they don't want to promote the Labor party?

Tell me someone isn't from WA without telling me they're not from WA…

You're definitely part of the minority on that stance there bud. $8 billion surplus projected, lowest Covid death rate in the country.
He hasn't really put a foot wrong

    • 10K daily? Can't even get to 10,000/day as predicted weeks ago. Marko is struggling surely. And talking about that abysmal death rate, I mean, how incompetent you have to be to have only few passed-away every few days with covid, right the at the supposed peak. What a clown hey.

      • Yeah i guess the only part that he has failed is he's undershot the modelled case numbers.
Which again would be a good thing (except to Popsiee)

    • I think that if you really put your mind to it, you could produce a legible post every now and then.

I know there are flights in QLD with Qantas that get residents rates when flying to and from outback towns. But only for residents of said towns.
