"EA Indie Bundle" is an oxymoron.

  • Metacritic Scores:

    Shank - 67
    Shank 2 - 73
    Deathspank - 77
Deathspank: Thongs Of Virtue - 78
    Warp - 74
Gatling Gears - Not rated on PC (Approx 74 on consoles)

I don't like EA using the term 'indie' or 'bundle'. They have kinda become synonymous with charity in my mind and EA are anything but.

    • +4

      That's a bit harsh.

EA games are produced with considerable charity by the developers who do free unpaid overtime for EA.

  • +4

After the whole DRM debacles years ago, I have promised to never buy anything from EA again.

This stupid moves by them just underlining my reason why. They think there are still some idiots who would like to make charity to them…

    • -1

Sue me for liking good games.

  • +4

    I lol'd at "Indie" too..

  • +2

Ooh goodie, DRM EA Access sounds great!! I'm sure it would successfully and inconveniently restrict my access to the games if I were to buy them.

  • +3

I want to down vote because it is lying, its not independent.

    -Edit-

I may have misunderstood 'indie', isn't the word 'indie' attached to developers independent from a publisher, so if EA are helping with this they are not independent and these games are therefore not 'indie'. Unless because their development was independent and only this pack is being dealt with by EA, then I suppose they could keep the title 'indie'… hmmm.

    • I'm in the same boat. A lot of 'indie' deals have been popping up lately, and I can see it getting to the point where things are advertised as such when they arent. Either way, these are good games being promoted by a crap company… I'm so torn! :S

    • +2

No, you're right. Indie = independently published. Which is the opposite of publishing through one of the biggest game companies in the world.

      • No, indie = Independently developed by a small studio, an individual, etc with no financial support from game publishers during development.

EA only assisted in publishing and distributing the game once development of the game was completed which is why these games are still considered indie games.

What you need to understand is the developers of the games in this bundle weren't approached by EA and asked to make these games, nor were they assisted financially by EA. The developers are not in partnership with EA and therefore are independent. If there was a partnership then EA would fund the development. What most likely happened was that the developers approached EA with their near completed project, EA liked what they saw and decided they would go ahead and publish their game for a fee.

    • Steam has had other 'Indie Packs' for sale in the past - none of them have had to have a publisher associated with them. I wonder why EA would have felt the need.

  • Warp looks pretty cool. I found Shank to be incredibly boring. Not sure about the others.

    • Warp was a lot of fun. Expect an obvious console port and some annoying DRM though.

      • annoying DRM within Steam?

also, sounds like it could be like Roboblitz. That was a bit of fun, but controls were clunky.

        • Not really anything like Roboblitz. Controls in this, while a little inaccurate, are well and truly adequate.

While I agree that EA might deserve a neg, the deal itself doesn't. Come back with a legit reason to neg this.

    • +1

Also negging you because of bullshit negging that has nothing to do with the actual deal.

  • +6

On the bright side of things, at least this bundle wasn't released on Origin.

  • +6

At the bottom of the Warp game info page:

"INTERNET CONNECTION, EA/ORIGIN ACCOUNT, ACCEPTANCE OF PRODUCT AND ORIGIN END USER LICENSE AGREEMENTS, AND REGISTRATION WITH ENCLOSED SINGLE-USE SERIAL CODE(S) REQUIRED TO PLAY"

So even thought these are sold on Steam you still need an Origin account? No thanks.

  • Indie bundle should be trade marked by the real indie bundle deal that support charity and we all love.
how dare EA marketing steal this term.

  • +2

Good deal, to everyone up in arms about EA kicking puppies (which yes, I'm pretty sure they have a department for), please consider the following-

    • The difference between a publisher and a developer.
    • These games are published under the EA Partner Program.
    • Shank has already been part of Indie Bundle 4.
    • Steam by definition is a digital rights management distribution platform.

The poster was nice enough to include links to the developers websites, go have a look at the size of the companies making these games, who are leveraging EA to reach more customers.

Doesn't really change the fact that EA are likely taking a huge chunk.

None of these games make me want to pay EA to force them to keep making sequels.

Does nobody realise that the whole point to an indie developer releasing directly to the public is they can take as long as they need, make the game how they want it and then get the direct profits from it. Its huge incentive to put 110% into a sequel that will make them even more money.

Anything to do with EA wrecks how the indie system works.

      • busy in the office - so, kudos for writing this down.

  • All of these games are ok, but they are not a special indie games and are generally poorly executed from the great initial idea.

Warp for example has an amazing idea yet its clear EA told them to get the game out asap. The game gets repetitive which makes anything amusing about the game no longer amusing.

The resolution can not actually be changed, it just upscales the native resolution so it looks bad.

If this was a true indie game none of this would be true, regardless if the developer is good/evil, its likely EA's fault for the poor end result as its clear the original idea was great.

  • Well, while you are all complaining about EA, i just want to say that Gatling Gears is great fun, looks fantastic, and best of all, can be played in local Co-Op mode on your PC with 2 controllers!
Had a blast playing this with my bro one weekend.
