Which Qantas Credit Card Is The Best to Have with your Experience

Hi all, I have recently applied for the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black for the Qantas sign-on bonus points.

However, I want to know which Qantas card is the best to hold/keep and will earn good Qantas point in the long run? Obviously, lower cost to own one… ANZ Black will cost me $425 every year.

Done some research and the two AMEX card drew my attention…
1. Qantas AMEX Ultimate $450 annual fee ($450 travel credit + 2 Qantas club access + 2 AMEX lounge access…)
2. Qantas David Jones $99 annual fee (can opt for Qantas point instead of AMEX reward points)

Anyone own any of the cards above? Also, wanted to know the best option of VISA/Mastercard :)

Or, you reckon getting the sign-on bonus is the quickest way to accumulate Qantas point?

Thanks everyone!

I have the Qantas Amex Ultimate for about 4–5 years now. Pre pandemic, I was travelling at least once a year on domestic/Overseas trips. I got great value from the flight credit, and club access.

Thanks to the sign up bonus, and the accumulation of points I managed to rack up close to 300k of points. I used them to upgrade multiple long-haul flights to the US and it was totally worth it. Worth mentioning that if you don't use up the full travel credit, you forfeit the remainder. It resets every year too.

    • 2 Amex lounge and 2 Qantas lounge access. Can we transfer 1 of those lounge pass to our partner? Thanks!

Qantas yes , Amex pass no, however can use two Amex passes at once with the card holder present

Also with the Qantas Amex ultimate you don’t automatically get the Qantas lounge passes. You have to spend some money on Qantas flights (or purchasing Qantas memberships) for those passes to become available for use.

    • With ANZ Black, you can access the lounge with Qantas or Jetstar flight (if I read the T&C correctly). Can we access the lounge too if we fly with Jetstar with Amex Qantas Ultimate?

Yeah I was going to go Amex too. Nothing to do with the points; everything to do with the customer experience.

To give you an example, many banks will still charge a foreign transaction fee for operators such as Klook - where the operator is overseas even though the payment is in AUD. American Express does the only logical thing and only charges this fee if the charge is in a foreign currency:

    https://www.americanexpress.com/au/credit-cards/about-credit…

Similarly many banks will charge you a cash advance fee to buy a lotto ticket. American Express seems to limit cash advance fees to enrolled members pulling cash out of an ATM. Sure there probably aren't a lot of places you can buy a lotto ticket on Amex. But I strongly prefer knowing what I'm charged to being able to gamble on credit.

The ACCC should pull the banks into line. Lucky dip credit card fees are just not acceptable. Especially on $10 transactions when sometimes the fees are like $2.50.

    The Amex.
If you travel once a year, the $450 travel credit gets used and offsets your card cost. You also get access to the Amex Shop small deals, and many other Amex deals that run regularly.
Some stores will charge higher fees for Amex though.

I'd also suggest looking at the Citibank Premier as they have a good sign up bonus and a card fee that's not excessively high.

    • Is that correct that you can only use the travel credit on Qantas flight? At least that is what I read on the Amex site… :( can we use that for hotel bookings etc?

  • Do the amex people need a visa or MasterCard as a backup or just use Visa debit when amex not accepted?

    • That’s what I want to find out too! As everyone agreed that Amex Qantas Ultimate will be the best Qantas CC, what’s the best card (visa/mastercard) to hold besides the Amex? :)

      • I reckon Coles for no annual fee reward CC. Otherwise churn regularly

        • I’ve the Coles no annual fee CC. Just signed-up for my Qantas FF account yesterday and saw an option to link any Mastercard to my Qantas account. I have then linked my Coles CC to that, but no way for me to check if my transaction on that Coles CC actually helps collecting Qantas Point. :/

The best one to hold is the one that gave you a big, fat sign on bonus. Hold that until renewal, then cancel and do another one. Your unlikely to outdo the sign on bonus with a new cars rather than holding an existing one.

Rinse. Repeat. Churners will do this well before 12months is up - pretty much once the bonus is paid, it's on to the next one.

Hold that until renewal, then cancel and do another one.

Hold that until bonus points land. CANCEL. Set reminder in phone for 1 year. Cycle through all the banks.

      FTFY

      • How big is the impact to the credit score to do that annually?

        • Negligible. I still have a score over 800.

  • Anyone recommend the commbank cards for FF?
Also with the Amex 450 credit how does it work in terms of booking a flight.
Is it 450 dollars worth of credit or an actual voucher provided to book with an airline?

    • $450 Qantas credit added to your Amex Travel account. Can only be spent on Qantas flights and only spent on Amex Travel Website (standard prices are same as Qantas but they don't have all the sales).

      • Thanks. Overall would you recommend this card?

        • I churn multiple cards a year so I’m not necessarily recommending any card. The fair value of the qantas credit is definitely less than $450. If you have points you’ll normally book a classic reward seat instead of paying cash for qantas tickets so it’s not really saving (plus often Jetstar, Virgin and Rex are cheaper).

Amex also recently included COVID in their travel insurance which is a plus. They’ve also reopened their lounges which can be nice if travelling internationally with an airline that’s not qantas.

130k bonus points on signup is notionally worth $1300 so if you haven’t had an Amex for 18 months it’s still a good deal.
