Unable to Remotely View My Dahua NVR Security Cameras on Telstra nbn

Hello,

Seeking some help with Dahua NVR and Telstra NBN having issue i.e. after a few days unable to remotely view security cameras on my phone via app unless I reboot modem or NVR. Then it'll work for some time then same issue again. It's called Dahua P2P, and each time this issue happens Dahua P2P status on NVR = offline

Was working fine when using Optus 5G home wireless internet (NVR connected to Optus supplied Nokia fastmile 5G modem), but cancelled that and switched back onto NBN with 4G backup As Optus tower near me has been in maintenance for last four months with no estimated resolution time. Hence was having lot of speed issues on Optus 5G.

Hardware:
  • Telstra smart modem 3 (black device)
  • Dahua 8 channel NVR
Troubleshooting steps I've already tried but no luck:
  • Setting static LAN IP for NVR on modem (rebooted both modem and NVR after making change to ensure it saves)
  • WAN/LAN port forwarding to static LAN IP of NVR
  • Used different ethernet cables in case of bad cables causing this issue
  • Tried plugging NVR into different LAN ports on modem as modem has 4 LAN ports
  • Disabled UPNP on NVR and left it as enabled as per default setting on modem

I'm thinking of maybe turning off Dahua P2P and instead using dyndns or similar to see if that resolves the issue? As I don't know if Telstra would be blocking this on their and, and even if they were it'd be very difficult to have them investigate etc.

Thanks for your help!!

  • I'm sure you have more hardware than you've listed. I'd expect the network traffic path to be something like incoming NBN cable —> NBN modem —> Telstra smart modem —> switch —> Dahua NVR. Or perhaps you've got another router between the Telstra smart modem & the switch?

    • To clarify, I've got NBN FTTN so telephone cable (coming in from NTD located on outside of my house) is plugged into the modem. NVR is plugged into LAN port of modem via ethernet cable. I don't have any other networking equipment such as a switch of wi-fi access points.

The Dahua NVR has a built-in 8 port PoE switch to service each PoE camera connected + 1 LAN port to connect it to modem/router for internet access.

      In terms of IP's:
      - Modem is on default 192.168.0.1-196.168.0.20x LAN range
      - NVR has a IP assigned of 192.168.0.x
      - Cameras connected to NVR are on 10.1.1.x range

        • Modem is on default 192.168.0.1-196.168.0.20x LAN range
        • NVR has a IP assigned of 192.168.0.x

Does NVR has a DHCP assigned IP or have you manually set a static IP which is in the DHCP range of the router ?

        • First time I plugged in NVR to modem, modem assigned a DHCP IP address to NVR within LAN range. I since made that IP static for NVR in modem settings.

          • +1

@PLA74: To clarify it is something like below (I think 196 is a typing mistake on your comment and should be 192).
Usually if you make any IP static, it should be outside the DHCP range, otherwise router may assign that IP to another device and which can cause a scenario like you told.

            Modem DHCP range : 192.168.0.1-192.168.0.200
NVR IP : 192.168.0.220 (manually set on NVR as static IP)

            • @bazingaa: @bazingaa Sorry yes typo - I meant 192.

OH I didn't know that, let me try assigning a static IP outside of DHCP range. I'll need to figure this out at the modem LAN DHCP range is quite large by default, so maybe I can shorten it then assign a static IP outside of DHCP range to NVR.

I'll report back later today or tomorrow as I'll need to reboot modem/NVR after making change. Thank you for flagging this, all these years I didn't know about it.

              • @PLA74: @bazingaa sorry for the late reply. I shortened the DCHP range and set static IP outside of the range. The modem sticks the static IP as expected to NVR on LAN. However the NVR still goes offline i.e. remote viewing stops working.

Few times it worked by itself for an hour or so then dropped again. Super frustrating

  • Are you sure your NBN with 4G backup isn't flipping from one to the other? You might be getting authorised from the NVR to one IP address, then the fall-over modem is activated, giving you a different IP address. The NVR will show offline because you are from a different address and assumed to be hacking because it's expecting the original address.

    • I don't think so, as there haven't been any NBN issues so the 4G backup hasn't been utilised yet. I only tested a few times that the 4G backup does work without the NVR even plugged into modem at that time (pulled out the NBN/telephone cable from modem).

  • CGNAT?

    • Not sure, I had Optus NBN before and even Optus 5G home broadband and was fine on that.

This same issue happened on when I was on Belong NBN (Telstra provider).

  • If it works initially, and then stops after a few days, it seems to be an application or hardware (or both) issue? Can you confirm if just rebooting the NVR fixes it every time or just the modem? If so, then the solution might be to put in a smart plug or a schedule to do a reboot every 24 hours (during the quiet hours)

Do consider a separate sub-network for your setup which is accessible via VPN rather than port forwarding. Most of these NVR, cameras etc. seldom get updated and even if they do, the external ports get probed all the time by external parties looking for an easy way into your network …

    Cheers

    • Thanks! Dropouts are sporadic and not consistent

  • your telstra router is dropping its public IP address. i have the same thing happening at our work place. once you reboot the telstra router it obtains a new public ip address again, but not long after the NVR updates to reflect this change it drops again.
been meaning to call telstra about this but havnt had the time.

    • @Hiroko any luck with Telstra on this? I tried to raise with customer support but as expected they have no clue and can't help
