Checking The EFTPOS Machine before Paying for Kebab

So this has happened twice where I buy food from these dodgy kebab shops at Gold Coast (QLD) where the cashier holds the EFTPOS machine facing to themselves and wanting me pay pass my card and when I ask to see it I noticed they have put extra $7 there!

I asked what was that for? He said "oh for drink" .I pointed the menu the had $10 plus drink he is like "oh sorry" and fixed it.
Please always check the EFTPOS machine before paying whilst I was there I noticed so many people just touch their cards/phone and don't check it.

I exclusively use Apple Pay on iPhone and it immediately pops up with payment receipt so you can check it live there too.

      Kinda past tense though..

    • Yep, apple pay all the way and if theres an issue its easy to show them and reverse it.

    • You should check the amount before paying. Saves you alot of hassles down the track. So let's say they charged you $7 extra. What you gonna do? Argue with the guy for 30 minutes for him to issue the refund?

      • Immediately advise them it’s wrong. Most people will correct it and refund difference straight away.

If there’s odd person that doesn’t, you can click to report an issue straight away. Doubt any seller would argue an overcharge though.

Yeah, worse are those Square terminals there's no customer facing display for the amount.

Or when the merchant doesn't select the option to show the total including any fees

Square terminals there's no customer facing display

Square Terminal the whole thing should be customer facing, just turn it around. Or are you talking about the tiny Square Reader that has no integral display? If the later just ask to see the phone/tablet to confirm.

      • Yep I meant the small reader, usually it's taped down or stuck to the counter and the tablet is usually not facing the customer.

To be honest I don't think you should need to ask, it's not a bother for me to ask but if there's a queue or its a fast transaction it shouldn't be necessary to ask, get a response and check etc

        • I've never come across one of those being used in a retail setting. They're intended for farmers markets and that sort of thing and have a higher transaction fee. I'd definitely ask to see the transaction amount.

          • @apsilon:

I've never come across one of those being used in a retail setting.

Up into like three years ago they were the only things available and they would definitely use like that they even sell a product that allows you to use it like that.

            https://squareup.com/au/en/hardware/stand

Most people choose to use a third party stand though but there's does have a Lazy Susan capability so can easily be swivelled to the customer third parties know most of them are fixed.

and have a higher transaction fee.

The reason for the higher transaction fee is because with the more expensive hardware be using lower processing as a selling point. These products have only been in the Australian market for a few years now.

          • @apsilon: Usually food markets have them, I see alot of them, but they are usually paired with a tablet of some kind which shows the amount you are paying.

  • I ask for a receipt too.

  • Is this the first kebab place on the right side of Cavill Ave as you head east, halfway down towards Orchid Ave? Sketchy dudes in there

    • High Rent!

    • Far out that place is still there????? I remember seeing that like 15 years ago

WHAT the hell! yes him! Ozi kebab
i be going gc again this wknd will record it and make them do the mistake again and go to police station.

  • I had some guy at Ruby Tuesday 'miskey' my $60ish order by adding a 5 in front. The display was so dull and scrathced up, plus i wasnt wearing my reading glasses, that I thought it was a $ sign. Needless to say I was annoyeed that my grocery and weekend fun budget was tied up for 5 days before I got a refund.

Doesn't this apply for all card payments? Common sense.

But, I do know someone who ordered a take-away after quite a few quiet ales, paid for it at time of ordering, and went outside for a dart.
Went back in to pick up the order and paid again. Didn't realise until the card statement arrived.

  • Noted not buying kebab anymore.
