    From the item description:

Please note only Windows system support MST and SST(Mirror & Extend Mode), Mac OS DOES NOT support triple display. it only support mirror mode and non-mirror mode. Non-mirror mode means that the three external monitors are same but different from laptop. Single use HDMI 1 can up to 4K 60Hz under DP1.4 source. Resolution will be 4K@30Hz and 1080P@60Hz if two HDMI monitors play simultaneously and will be 1080P@60Hz when dual or triple display with VGA.

Basically, if you have a Mac, you can only display the same content on all HDMI and VGA ports. If you have Windows and MST is supported, then those ports could display something different BUT they share the same video bandwidth pipe so once you have dual displays out, no more 4K/60Hz.

If you have an older Macbook Pro or PC laptop or NUC, and that only supports DP 1.2 via alt-mode, then you won't get 4K/60Hz even with just 1 HDMI output and there is a chance you run into compatibility issues with some DP 1.4 based dongles. Also, as usual, with all Android phone capable of USB-C/alt-mode HDMI out, they are all DP 1.2 based currently, so with this particular type of dongles, 4K/60Hz output is gone (4K/30Hz is the max you can get).

will be nice if it had an extra USB-C port

Yeah, one USB-C port - for PD at that - is a baffling decision on a 12 port hub. Surely they could have sacrificed a couple of the USB-2/3 ports? Otherwise, I'd buy this now.

Doesn't get any better with the WavLink 13-port hub… only one USB-C port still… the extra port on my model is 1gb Ethernet. Mind you it pretty much meets the bill and performs admirably in all other areas.

That said, it is well built and is a nice bit of kit. There are cheaper hubs available, however it was their reputation for quality product that sold me. My only nuisance nag is their web-site. It took me ages to wade through the myriad of their products to find the updated software drivers.

  • Are all these much the same as each other?

I got this one a few days ago, and it's working fine for what I need WFH with a work laptop - 2x HDMI screens, ethernet, USB keyboard and USB mouse.

  • Am looking for a decently priced hub for my new MacBook Pro 16 2021 that won't kill the computer (I read some reviews that said the dock shorted their USB port - so don't want that!)

    Preference would be:
2x Fast USB ports for external HDD(s)
    HDMI
    Ethernet

    What are others using?

Since your Macbook Pro 16 (M1 Pro / M1 Max) supports MagSafe, use that whenever possible. For Macs, it is more complicated because Apple started using USB-C before everyone else. Initially, the power delivery standard was still a bit loose. Apple basically followed PD 2.0 standard initially (and generally remains backward compatible to that). The problem with PD 2.0 is that it doesn't have a strict requirement on the cable. Even though Apple itself provides/sells e-marked USB-C cables (with 100W support), it couldn't stop supporting non e-marked cables. PD 3.0 supports above 100W, that's partially why Apple introduced another cable + MagSafe support. PD 2.0 opens the door for inferior cables, dongles. The burden is shifted to Macbook Pro's to manage and deal with inferior peripherals. Some people will tell you they have no issue with more cost effective dongles and cables, but they most certainly don't check them using an USB-C meter. If you stick with Apple USB-C peripherals (even PD 2.0 ones), they are fine.

Anyway, with power, especially laptops which are $1500+, I would simply use the original power adapter. Or, at the very least, use branded (Dell, Lenovo, HP) power supplies or USB-C monitors (always best to stick with original though). Don't buy into this USB-C is universal hype (we already have PD 2.0, 3.0, PDO, PPS). As for why these dongles / docks might be risky (especially USB-C ones), they only need to achieve USB 3.2 gen 1 data speed, so they don't have to put in top notch wires. Would they do the right thing and put better wires for the PD pins?

For Macs, I simply won't bother with USB-C dongles having multiple display out support since Apple refuses to support USB-C/Alt-Mode MST. (Thunderbolt options are too expensive for me). Also, I don't use the PD passthrough on these cheap dongles, just a decent dock which has HDMI, USB-A and other features you need. Personally, I use Apple original dongle and I cannot even afford a Macbook Pro 16 inch M1 Pro (and I don't use the passthrough feature on that official dongle). No dongle with PD passthrough can do 100% passthrough. All dongles run on power, not air.
