Converting UK License to VIC (25+) - What Actually Happens at The Appointment?

Pretty simple question, just finding any information online pretty hard to come by.

I'm planning to convert my UK drivers license to a Victorian license. I am over 25, and have booked the appointment for next week.

What actually happens there? Am I required to take any tests?

Thanks niece and nephew :)

i am reasonably sure that you don't have to take the test again, as Australia recognises the UK driving standards (and vice versa)

i think that you only have to take the driving test again if you are from a country that is not on some kind of list (the UK is on this list as far as i'm aware), the countries not on the list tend to have (in)famous driving standards.

According to VicRoads you just need to bring:

    • The completed application form
    • Identification (passport plus another from the list)
    • Your valid and current UK licence

Pay the fee, get your photo taken, keep the temporary licence they give you until your new Victorian licence arrives in the mail.

When did you arrive in Australia?

    • You also get asked to rattle off some letters on a screen as a pseudo-eye test. That’s pretty much it. 100% no re-test required.

Also OP they take photo of you themselves so no getting ripped off at Timpsons getting your own.

In NSW you get option of adding 10 year photo card for $5. Maybe same there too. Worth doing.

      • what's a 10 year photo card

Photo ID valid for 10 years. Redundant with a driving license but could be useful for places you don't want to show the license for whatever reason. Would imagine mostly applies abroad e.g. renting a scooter in Thailand or scuba diving verification in Madagascar.

When I switched state licenses, and also when I first got mine, I also needed proof of address. A bank account statement was enough, and I asked my bank to print one out for me. https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/licences/evidence-of-identit…

Unless it has changed much in the past few years, it's very straightforward and takes only a few minutes. They get you to do a very basic eye test, check your ID, take your photo and then print your new licence on the spot. They take your old UK licence from you and invalidate it (mine was the old UK paper licence which they punched a hole in and stamped). If you had any restrictions on your UK licence, e.g. can only drive automatics, must wear spectacles, penalty points etc, those didn't carry over to the new licence.

  • Thank you everyone!

  • I would highly recommend still reading some of the Victorian road rules, especially around things like trams and hook turns that you may not be used to.

Be prepared for endless fines for driving 3mph over the limit and being a menace to society

  • Its ridiculous you don’t have to do at least a knowledge test.

  • Just do what just about every other driver does in Victoria and cut your license out of the back of the Weet-Bix box like a normal person.
