[PS5] Free: The Matrix Awakens: an Unreal Engine 5 Experience

Moved to Forum: Original Link

"'The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience' is a free, boundary-pushing cinematic and open-world interactive tech demo that combines the power of PlayStation®5 with UE5.

An original concept written and cinematically directed by Lana Wachowski and James McTeigue, this boundary-pushing technical demo features Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity while also—in a blending of the real and unreal—playing themselves.

Many of the VFX crew from the original film came back together for the digital execution of the experience, including John Gaeta, Kim Libreri, Jerome Platteaux, George Borshukov, and Michael Gay, in collaboration with teams across both Epic Games and partners such as SideFX, Evil Eye Pictures, WetaFX (formerly Weta Digital), and many others.

The demo morphs from breathtakingly realistic cinematic to fast-paced third-person shooter experience, complete with action-packed car chase sequence, and also provides a rich, vastly detailed open world to explore, set within the universe of 'The Matrix'.

Download it now to experience the future of interactive storytelling and entertainment with UE5."

This seems to have been available since 7/12/2021, but only just saw this yesterday - downloaded, but haven't played this yet. Hope you enjoy!

Agree, and has been out for some time

  • It’s been free since 6 months ago.

Also, free games are not deals.

      Not even a game… Just a demo 😃

        It’s a tech demo / advertisement.

I tried this out but found that it ran quite laggy and seemed like it was dropping frames ect while running on my brand new ps5. Not exactly what I expected for a showcase of a new engine. Did others experience this?

    • Yeah same, all the while playing it I kept sort of cringing and thinking that it wasn't the best premier showcase to reveal an engine/concept with when it actually did the opposite of making me excited.. assuming this is what the 'future' of this generation is going to be using.

Going full circle back again to the previous few decades of console era's where graphics are emphasised over stable 60fps performance..? No thanks.

It ran beautiful on my PS5 most of the time, very odd that you had a poor experience on your PS5. I did notice in some sequences the frame-rate stuttered, but mostly it was good.

And just FYI, it's etc short for et cetera, not ect.

    • Had some framerate drops but wasn't too bad. It wasn't meant to be an optimised smooth game experience but a tech demo for the new engine features and in particular, Nanite, Lumen and the procedural generation of the world which hasn't been done on this scale before.

      • Only place I noticed significant frame rate drop was when smashing into cars.

Thanks, I was wondering if this was still available. It’s intended to be a showcase of Unreal Engine 5. I bet the regret going with the Matrix given that the new movie was a flop.

Thanks. I saw the Matrix demo in the UE5 video but I didn't know we could actually play it on our PS5s.

I'm glad some people appreciated this post - given it was available for free a while ago, just didn't see any ozb posts about this and never noticed this on the store before, so thought I'd share just in case.

Also amazed that this demo is over 25GB so I thought it must be decent, even if you can't really play a game, and it might not be from an actual game under dev.
