Melatonin Tablets - Price is way high at a chemist

Hi, I just had these tablets prescribed to help with getting to sleep (with my Sleep Apnea mask).

Dr said they were about $60, but when I checked Chemist Warehouse they were $200?
I found one that was $58 online, but I also found herbal supplements that were way cheaper?

Any advice on whether the supplements are any good?

iherb version is exactly the same thing if you order 2mg or whatever you were prescribed. Some doctors will actually tell you they also order from iherb for that product

As above, iherb. You can get up to 10mg there. Substantially cheaper even with shipping.

  • +1 for iherb. While melatonin doesn't do the trick for me it's legit there.

Just buy from America, it's not regulated as a medicine over there so you can buy it off the shelf, or off the website. And do some research on it, you don't want to take it before bed like it's sleeping pills, take it as directed by your doctor which will probably be more like about 12 hours before your intended minimum body temperature time during your sleep.

    • +1

Yeah, nah. About 30-60 minutes before bedtime is the way to go. To early and you'll miss the effect.

You’d benefit from a placebo effect by treating them like sleeping pills.

  • The 'herbal supplements' are probably the homeopathic ones, which are diluted 10000 times and 99.999% placebo ie useless

    • Which one was the OP referring to?

      • When I was looking at melatonin tablets, there was two different types. One was a tablet form, available in dosages of 3,5 or 10mg a tablet. The other was a liquid kind, significantly cheaper.

        Like this one but cheaper
The "5x" in the description refers to the times its been diluted with water. In this case, its 10^5, so one part in 100,000

        • OK cheers, I've only ever seen it in pill form or combined in a capsule with other ingredients. Haven't tried the liquid form so I can't comment on it's effectiveness.

  • Even the Dr said source it from US.

    • HE gave me a script, so definitely local.

      • Our Dr said , you can buy it and pay $$ with the script or get it online for the fraction of the price.

    Another +1 for iherb.

I regularly buy 21st century which is one of the cheaper brands. Under $10 for 120 tabs. Comes in 3, 5 and 10mg tabs.

I find melatonin is a big help in getting me to sleep, just not staying asleep. Hence the 3.30am post 😉

    • Exact same here, just got some some a few weeks ago and took just over a week to arrive

I find they work OK, but not as effective as Tamazapan (which needs a script)

Temazepam is a benzo and therefore habit forming. It's OK if you are in your 90s living in aged care and won't ever need to discontinue them.

I take half a tablet maybe once every 10 days or so when needed…..if that could be considered a habit

          • @slow: No that's fine.

  • Naturelo do a good product called 'Sleep' which has melatonin mixed with sleepy herbs.

  • Go iHerb, but if you get the 12mg one, or a really high dosage one like that, you shouldn't even need a qtr of that when taking it.

I break mine up into fragments and just have a small amount.

We get 3mg from the compounding pharmacy 100 caps $62

  • Jump on a plane to Hawaii!
There I got my first ones and we had to prolong the holiday and return on the day they became legal here.
Anywhere in the US and avoid their 2 large chain stores. Find a Whole Food store and be blown away what they have.

    • I can't afford a train trip to Sydney, let alone…….Wait a minute, travel is temporarily free in NSW ATM.

Last night I bought some Swisse of Amazon, but will probably go the iHerb way as recommended.

      • Find a GP that will prescribe Dymista. Just like any medicine use with caution.
A mate drove 800km in one day just to find a willing GP.
I usually raid all shelves of Colesworth to find non-expired natural sleeping aids on special.
Blackmores Tranquil Night is the hardest to find but for a reason. Wake up non groggy!

    • Give u another solution, just buy them in aliexpress.

  • +1

another vote for iHerb, even my GP tells people to get non urgent supplements from iHerb instead of local.

  • None of the herbal remedies worked for me.
My GP prescribed 60 Melatonin ARX 2mg tablets for me which my local pharmacy dispensed for $58.00.
I submitted a claim to Medibank and they paid $15.50 through my extras cover.

  • It's weird that in Australia melatonin is a prescription only medicine, while in many other countries it's sold in supermarkets.

As long as it's actual melatonin, not a 'herbal substitute' and not useless homeopathic medicine, I would order online.

    • +1

No longer prescription only. You can get lower doses over the counter now, just ask. I think the actual rules are over the counter for over-50s only but I'm way younger and have never had an issue.

  • Try a different chemist, I know someone who just went through the exact same thing. Chemist Warehouse said over $200 for 5mg Melatonin tablets they then went to a chemist inside a shopping centre (not even a budget chemist) and got them for just over $40

    • I looked up a few pharmacists online. No luck.

      • Try Chempro chemist if there’s one near you.

  • Anyone who used this who is Ok to get to sleep but not stay asleep for more than 3 hours? Would really like to sleep through the night occasionally.

  • Iherbi

  • iherb even better than chemistwarehouse?
