X200 SUV from Great Wall a Great bargain?

Came across the great wall suv for $29,000 drive away with all features. Seemes like a very good price as next cheapest suv over $35k.

Anybody know if its a true bargain or a lemon in disguise ?

Its like the Dealextreme version of car purchases and i have bought a truck load of super cheap stuff from DX over the year, some has lasted some havent.

  • Alot of people seem happy with them on whirlpool, despite the endless elitist trolls in the thread.

  • If it has a sound warranty, no problems.

  • I've known a couple of dudes with GW utes, they weren't lemons but they weren't particularly impressive either. As the owners themselves said, they reckoned they had paid about 25% more than they should have for what they ended up with! That said, I have no idea if the X200 comes from the same stable, so what goes for the light commercials may not necessarily apply to these.

Personally, I'd be thinking about resale value; as a relative newcomer GW will not be good in that regard at this point in time, that's pretty much assured. Hyundai & Kia went through the same thing for a few years.

If; all things being equal; it's only $5k up to another (well known) manufacturer, I'd be doing some hard thinking & ruthless bargaining if I were in your position. Just IMHO. :)

    • +1

      +1 for resale value
Also don't forget repairs will be more difficult and parts will be hard to come by

I have it on good advice (car engineer) that these cars only just pass the Aust standards and the design and materials quality will not pass the test of time

So if you want to sell I in 2 years - low resale
if you want to keep it 10 years - it may not last well

Better off with a 12 month old brand name or a demo at same price

  • Having installed equipment in a chinese automotive manufacturer (and Australian) I can tell you that the quality control is simply not as good. This means there is a higher risk of failure (but you might be fine). They also cut corners such as internal plastics which will fade/warp over the life of the vehicle.

That said, it depends what you are looking for.

  • Hm… I'd have a hard time choosing a new one of these over a $25,000 Toyota from a used car yard. Even with 200,000km, they'll outlast it in every way. If for instance, you wanted to tow a caravan around the country… everywhere you go you see Toyotas, Nissans, and to a lesser extent Mitsubishi. And if one breaks down… it's most likely going to take x weeks for parts to arrive, paying for accommodation the entire time while you wait. Even without towing… $6,000 difference when you're prepared to spend $29,000? Not even worth the risk. In my opinion. You'd be buying a lesser vehicle in every way. I'd press the dealer of the OTHER car you've priced… Tell him you want better wheels, satnav, stone/chip guards, and whatever else to sweeten the price difference, or you'll buy the chinese junk. (Sorry.) They have plenty of room to play with prices. Especially when replacing an item, they get to keep the lesser one. For instance - if they give you quality wheels - they still get to keep the lesser wheels - so the price difference is less than they'd have you believe.
