Is The $33 LED Upgrade Legit?

I have engaged with a Efficient Energy Group that has offered to change my existing halogen downlights over to LED for only $33. Has any ever completed this upgrade at their own home and can verify if this is legit?

I have been provided with some information regarding the NSW energy saving scheme https://www.efficientenergygroup.com.au/

Check they're on the approved list for the program: https://www.energysaver.nsw.gov.au/browse-energy-offers/hous…

There's only 12 approved companies in Metropolitan Sydney.

  • Yes legit. $33 for a set amount. We ended up needing a lot more for all the lights so I think it came to around $60ish but still worth it if you dont already have LEDs throughout the house.

  • Keep in mind they put in the el cheapo of cheap LED’s so don’t expect a long/reliable life

    • Two years minimum warranty on the globes.

      • A concrete guarantee, as soon as they step outside onto concrete, it's finished.

How many fly-by-nighters are still contactable after even a month?

We had ours done. If you have dimmers you need to replace the dimmer switch and then upgrade the globes. Ended up costing around $800 as we about 50 globes and wanted to maintain the dimmers. Saved about $50 -$60 off the next cpl of bills so would say its money well spent

  • If you want smart lights then get those,(like hue, LIFX, or like IKEA/Kmart/target etc branded) they can be a lot more convenient.
I thought the replacement of those bulbs was a free government program, but whenever I had someone ask me for that (TO REPLACE MY BULBS FOR FREE) I simply refused, I have energy efficient smart LED globes (hue- expensive ones). They still didn't stop BS like those smart lights are not efficient, they are 9.5 W, the LED's for replacement are like 9W, so I'll be saving .5W etc. BS.
Told them i am not stupid to be donating my expensive hue lights for replacement of a cheap garbage LED, for sake of saving .5 W and loosing my smart lights control functionality.

    • They won't touch your Hue LEDs. The upgrade program only covers replacement of halogens, incandescent or CFL downlights for LEDs.

The replacement LED downlights are <5W.

      • That's what they are supposed to do, but this doesnt stop them for saying stupid stuff like, Oh dont worry, I can replace your current bulbs too all of them, even though they aren't like those incandescent/CFL bulbs, I just need to take the current ones back as I need to do replacements (aka need to bring old bulbs back).

To a bigger surprise lol had a old school time friend ask me this same stupid question too, politely declined him.

I thought it was free? I get people offering to do it all the time. They get paid via the carbon credits scheme.
    (I'm in Vic)

      Two separate programs.

NSW state governments scheme is you pay a $33 one of fee and a licensed and approved sparky replaces your older downlights with free LED. Downside: only downlights, non-dimmable and not best brand.

Vic is using the VEEC scheme for free LED upgrades on a broader range of light types. It's not the state government but funded by the retailers (who are kind of forced to do it for carbon credits). The sparky gets cash per bulb based on energy savings.

    • The NSW scheme has a mandatory payment component. This component is not mandatory in Vic.

    • Not to mention the offer of a free balloon

  • They came, they quoted, I did not go ahead but went with another sparky.

They would only install non-dimmable LED, however, I would need to pay extra for all the dimmer switches and pay extra for dimmable bulbs.

I also thought the bulbs were only average. They did have a two year warranty replacement for the globes and 5 years on the rest of the job.

  • Yes, legit.

They quoted $33 to do my house (31 downlights). For various reasons I decided to replace the whole light fitting which was $494 including surface mount power plugs in Aug 2018. At the time that was cheaper than I could buy the lights.
