Cashrewards/ShopBack Defective Item Return

I bought a bunch of stuff from a shop and used cashrewards/shopback like a good ozbargainer.

Now, one of the items in the order is defective. I asked the merchant for an exchange, but they said there's no exchanges - only refunds. This means I need to buy a replacement at a higher price (and pay shipping, because of free shipping minimums), but my cash back for the entire purchase will almost certainly be cancelled. Alternatively, I can take the hit on the defective item … but I'll be out of pocket roughly the same amount.

Anyone have a suggestion on how to return the item, but keep the cash back?

    Only on Mother's Day, friend.

  • That's not how the ACL works, you can request a repair/replacement.

I doubt you can enforce that, if the merchant is offering a refund.

    • you may request, but they also may offer you only a refund. for example when that product is no longer in stock.

  • What merchant

And was it a clearance/demo item? If so that would prob explain y no exchange

    • Crocs Australia.

No - the item is still in stock. I suspect they stopped doing exchanges/replacements, because it's logistically more complicated than a return for them. Shafting people on cash backs is probably also a factor.

      • As a small business owner I would prefer to do an exchange than a refund if customer requests exchange… how weird.

        • I think Crocs uses a 3pl company for fulfillment. Getting them to do an exchange might be expensive. There's also the issue of making sure stock in available when the return is received.

Yeah - exchanges make sense for small businesses, but I can see why Crocs find it easier to refund.

      • Most clothing/shoe companies do this, if you order the wrong size they will process a refund and ask you to place a new order. I think its because its quicker this way, otherwise you'd be waiting for them to get the item back before they send a replacement.

You could wait until the cash back has been approved and then return the item for a refund (providing its within 1 yr and still deemed defective). In the interim, buy another pair of crocs.. shudder

Perhaps buying the same item and paying the shipping, but then returning the defective item on the new invoice is the way to do it.

  • You could wait until the cash back has been approved

Yeah - that's probably what I'll do. I didn't like the idea of waiting 3+ months, when the item was defective within days of purchase.

Make sure you check out the FAQ re warranty, you might be disappointed.

      • Yeah - that's also a concern with waiting 3+ months to return them

  • did you say "exchange" or "replacement"? in my mind, an exchange is something working that you wish to trade for a different item, but a replacement is specifically for a faulty / lost item. maybe the customer service rep didn't realise it was faulty, but i would go back and ask for a replacement, and see how that goes.
