Exposed Vs Concealed Rangehood

My partner and I are currently buying a new house together. We have the option of having an exposed (canopy) or concealed (undermount) rangehood.

I personally prefer the concealed ranghood as I think it looks better and its easier to clean. My partner thinks the canopy rangehood looks a lot better and he doesnt think cleaning it is a big deal anyway.

So we are leaving the decision to ozbargin lol

For reference the canopy rangehood will be Ilve IVG901X 900mm canopy rangehood and the concealed ranghood will be the ILVE 90cm Concealed Rangehood

Update: Concealed has won :D Thanks everyone for voting!

  • How much and what type of cooking do you do?

    • we currently have a hello fresh sub lol

I was going to say if you do a lot of frying then a more powerful rangehood (canopy) is probably better. If your cooking is mainly hello fresh style I would guess that a concealed is powerful enough but as mentioned below the most important is that it actually vents outside!

if i can turn back time i would of gotten concealed, so much easier to clean.

with canopy you will have oil stains that sticks with dust on the 3 exposed sides you have to clean lol

cleaned regularly, this is less difficult,

a concealed one has more tiny gaps and the cabinetry above it really becomes unusable, making it in my opinion harder to clean. the canopy one at least has better access for cleaning even though there is more surface area.

    • Yeah this was what I was thinking.

And whilst they might say now that cleaning won't be an issue, it will become one. Having the get a step-ladder out to wipe it over every so often, and if you're frying regularly sticky oil can be a pain to clean off.

Having said all that, concealed can be a pain to clean too, you just don't have to look at it and thus don't clean it as often.

Either way, try to get one wider than your cooktop by a little, we mistakenly got the same width as our cooktop. Sometimes you can actually see steam and stuff miss the range hood and spread out under the cabinets. 😔

    • everything will be 90cm sadly

I would disregard this comment. They mostly come in 60 and 90, and ideally for an aesthetic kitchen and resale, you want it to match the stovetop

For me it comes down to the cupboard space. Oh and the cost. On those two alone I'd go concealed.

    • The price will be the same regardless of which one it is

As long as they’re both proper extractor style I think it’s personal preference. Also how crazy is it that it’s 2022 and they’re still supplying halogen globes with these things.

    • Yeah the lights in your kitchen should be strong enough I turned my halogen off.

Uses more energy than three leds

Mine were gu10. Swapped it to led in about 5 seconds.

    • We swapped ours to non heat led.

    Exposed Vs Concealed Rangehood

It’s personal preference imo, but most importantly, to have ducting to vent outside, rather circulate inside you kitchen.

    • If you have the option, definitely have it vented. Our current one recirculates and it is nowhere near as effective.

  • The poll options both have the same amount of votes. Maybe you need to do a coin toss.

    Whatever the female partner wants……

    • Oh god… you're right!
OP should remind the husband that he will be nagged hearing about it for the duration of their time there, if he doesn't follow her wishes.

      • that is very true. Although, im pretty sure if it goes my way, ill also be hearing about it for a long time lol

You can get rangehoods where the exhaust fan is located on the roof. This is amazing at reducing the noise in the living rooms. After seeing one in action, its the only way to go!

  • Why are you buying a new house and you have to decide? Are the two properties next door to each other with different kitchen designs?

    • the house hasnt been built yet. We get to decide which rangehood we want.

Definitely concealed but go with a specialist rangehood brand with external motors. There's a big difference in quality of rangehoods. Head to E&S kitchens and speak to the kitchen specialists for a demo.

Falmec, Schweigen, and Qasair are the proper brands for rangehoods.

Make sure rangehood vents outside too, ideally under eaves.

    • Agree. Can’t imagine why anyone would want to lose cupboard space for a stylised duct. We didn’t go industrial strength with our remodel 5 years ago but did replace the slide out with a concealed (schweigen) that was deeper (400mm as opposed to the *std” 300mm). We have an outside vent but it was too difficult to retrofit an external exhaust motor into the 2storey.

    • The builder only gave us two choices- Ilve IVG901X 900mm canopy rangehood and the ILVE 90cm Concealed Rangehood

  • one thing to consider is the height of the cupboards you are putting in if concealed. if too low then it's a real pain finding the control panel if you're tall.

  • As long as it is good quality fan, correctly installed and connected to working vent duct going outside so you don’t poison yourself and your family… the rest is cosmetics

Have had an exhaust fan over kitchen stove for 40 years and never had to paint the wall or ceiling. They don't look as smart, but they actually work.

  • A lot of concealed range hoods don't come out far enough to effectively cover the cooktop. Yes, most have a little pull-out bit, but it's useless, too shallow to have a duct in there and it offers no suction.

If your heart is set on a concealed, the best bet is a Schweigen with remote motor. That way you can crank it up, but there's no noise as the motor is outside. They are the bees-knees, so to speak.

And no, all your appliance brands don't need to match.

    • The builder only gave us two choices- Ilve IVG901X 900mm canopy rangehood and the ILVE 90cm Concealed Rangehood. I know my brands dont need to match lol..

      • You'd be surprised how many people are obsessed with matching oven, cooktop, hood, fridge, dishwasher. It doesn't make sense to me, no one brand is good at everything.

Can you get a credit and install after handover?

Male here who bought a 2022 built house with wife.

Both of us see the exposed range hood as an eyesore. There are ways to conceal it by using some wood.

If your home is not built then try not to have a sink on your kitchen island. Another eyesore as it splashes water and dirty dishes are visible in middle of the room.

If you want more tips then I can provide those too.

    • its a turnkey house so I have very limited options on what I can change. The kitchen sink is not something I can change, and yes it will be on the kitchen island :(

      • There are splashguards you can buy on Ebay and Aliexpress. Also, try not to use horizontal taps because they accumulate water on top and scaling occurs in few days.

  • Concealed for less cleaning. Keeping an exposed rangehood cosmetically clean takes devotion - if your partner doesn’t mind the work….(your time better spent on OZB).
Also, if you eventually replace it you can do concealed much cheaper and easier.

  • Concealed you don't knock your head in the corner once it is off and concealed.

  • Had both, and concealed is way easier to clean and maintain. The stainless steel canopy style are a nightmare to keep looking good.

Suggestion: If he wants the external one, he has to be the one to clean it.

  • I don't know why everyone raves about concealed being easier to clean, they're all the same and only cosmetic, if you do hello fresh cooking cleaning probably doesn't even needed but if you do a lot of high heat and oil then depending on your cabinetry you'll find that the vapour will eventually find it ways into the surface of your cabinet. It's more of a proper choice of a decent rangehood that do its jobs properly (the one that sucks all the kitchen air within minutes and doesn't sound like a jumbo jet).

  • Exposed Vs Concealed …

WOW … I though it was something about firearms … disregard, please.
