Has Anyone Had Success Getting a Discount with Telstra for Being a Loyal Customer? I Need More Data

I've been a Telstra customer for over 10 years now and their data plan just isn't quite cutting it for me. I've got the $65 per month for 80gb of data plan and I always run out. I can upgrade but competitors have much better deals such as Optus same price but 200gb of data.

Has anyone had success lobbying for a better deal with Telstra? What are the benefits of Telstra apart from better coverage?

Cheers

  • I found the shaped speeds with Telstra are good enough to get by, for iPhone and iPad anyway.

Try a Telstra mvno sim (ie. belong) on their cheapest plan for a few days and see how you go with coverage.

If it's suitable then make the switch for better value at least (80gb for $45pm). Then buy some cheap data from ozbargain classifieds that you can roll over.

  • Upgrade your plan to get more data? How do you go through 80GB a month? I assume it is just you?

I don't even use 80GB a month between my wife and I plus hotspotting for our Daughter's iPad.

Otherwise, depending on where you are, look at another telco like Optus. If you are in a city metro area, its all same same. If you are in a regional area, than I would stay with Telstra. I am in a regional area and would consider moving to another telco to save some $$$ but want to ensure I have the coverage as some family members are in the bush a bit and only can get Telstra coverage when we are there.

    Telstra rewarding loyalty?

    Bahahha

    • Sounds about right.

      Yeah, he’s not joking

I’ve raised this many times with higher ups that we need to be rewarding existing customers. Not with (next to) useless Telstra Points

    • Rewards and bonuses go to people signing on to Telstra, not those that have been loyal for many years!

I'd love one of those new flash modems, but nup - only for the new ones.

technically you can just churn to ABB or anyone else and churn back and start a new contract - but you know what? ABB has been fantastic. Loving 1000/50 for not a lot more than what I was paying at telstra.

  • If you need Telstra coverage, why not moved away from Telstra for a month and then port back to Telstra @ JB HiFi? You will end up with more data and lower price.

    • From shareholders' perspective, loyalty doesn't mean much to them so better off Telstra for a month and then port back.

They are after new customer number growth to make their financial report look good.
I know this is ill-informed but that's what they have been doing for years.

  • Yep; in hindsight. Moved to another provider and never looked back

  • I just left Telstra after 15 years, something happened to my account just before Easter and I lost my mobile service.
3 operators could not fix it and asked me to go to Telstra store to change to a new sim. I went to the store and they couldn't even switch me into a new sim lol.

now I'm with Woolworth mobile xD

  • Depending what your needing data for? Can you live carrying a portable 4g modem around? (if lucky have a dual sim phone instead, most new phones have a second e-sim sim and physical sim), do you need speed then don't follow my recommendations below

Optus currently have half price deals with their pure data plans, I've actually been testing/trying there 5gb $15 ($7.50 half price plan deal) to see if I can live with the capped speed of 1.5Mbps after using up the 5gb allocated data to this data plan, so far so good and I actually almost stopped using my main number plan data with Belong (Telstra network) and if I'm desperate for faster speed I just swap back to Belong for speed, but strangely my capped 1.5Mbps data speed with Optus is more like capped at 10Mbps, don't know why and I ain't complaining lolz

this recommendation ain't for everyone, but no harm trialing for a month only costs one $7.50,….. plus bonuses get Optus sport for free, also Amazon Prime shopping, Prime Video & Music, Prime Gaming etc free for 6 months on/with Optus Subhub, that's worth $6.99 per month on its own, And since this data plan is postpaid can signup for an Optus Yes Fetch mini box for $5 a month πŸ˜€
