New Android Phone Recommendation - Help Me Choose!

Hi guys,

Recently dropped my pocofone f1 and totally smashed the screen :( So it is time for a new phone, although it was getting glitchy so I am not too sad.

I have managed to get my list down to the following, and have included the prices I can get them at through my work as I get commercial discounts at quite a few places. Would like to keep under $450, but can go up to $500 if really worth it.

Just looking for opinions on which one to get, or if there is something else that should be on the list?

Motorola – EDGE 20 FUSION 5G $420
Motorola – G51 5G $361
Samsung – Galaxy A52 – $466.10
Nokia – X20 – $496
Motorola – G50 5G – $248
Oppo – A74 5G $340.96
SAMSUNG – GALAXY A22 5G – $279.20
Oppo – A54 5G $276.43

I like a big screen, and NFC isn't a total deal breaker if the phone is absolutely incredible, but would be highly prefered. Must have a 3.5mm headphone jack though (have iphone for work and i hate hate hate the no headphone jack, combined with needing to share it with the charger). I use it for calls, texts, streaming and other basic stuff (stupid low graphics games that are a total waste of time pretty much!).

No grey market suggestions please, as I don't want to have warranty issues down the track (although unlikely, it just isn't worth the stress), plus needs to be at a physical store so I can get it in the next few days as this phone wont last much longer.

Any help is super appreciated.

The Samsung Galaxy A32 and Galaxy A52s 5G would be my top pick.

Galaxy A22 5G looks pretty good value at $316.. It's using the newer Dimensity 700 5G based on 7nm, which makes it fairly competitive against the Snapdragon 480 5G found in the Oppo A54 5G.

Moto G50 5G also uses Dimensity 700 but the trade off is the lower resolution display. I'll give this a miss if display quality is a concern.

The biggest loser would be the Nokia X20, as it lacks AMOLED display and everything else is lackluster for it's price, so it's easily outclassed by the premium low-end Samsungs.

  • I would get the Samsung A52 if you absolutely had to get a local phone out of your list.

  • I can get the A32 for $389. The A52s 5g is over my budget (@ $559.20).

This is the prices I can get on different Samsung models.

    a53 5g $559.20
    a52 $466.10
    a32 $389
    a23 $319.20
    a22 5g $279.20

Is the galaxy a52 much better than the a32 or a23?

    • Hi Yale, A32 6gb ? If yes, where from, I am looking for deals too

      • +1

Yes, 6gb. I get discounts through my work so the prices I can get wouldn't be the same as for others

    • Buy the Samsung A52s.
You said it's over your budget, but reach for it. You're getting a flagship phone at a discount there. The other variants (A52, A52-5G, and A53) are downgrades to it. There are some good phones, but the A52s is a great phone, and it will get discontinued soon so your time is limited.

      Get it and forget it.
(with other devices you'll keep wishing/wondering)

      • s20fe 5g snapdragon .. were close during sales

        • +1

Yeah, that's a pretty good device too.

It loses the 3.5mm Headphone Jack, instead for a Reverse-Wireless Charger. And it gets slightly better camera, but has 6-months or so less software support. Overall I think the A52-S is the better device, it's basically a flagship device at a midrange price, and the S20Fe is not far behind. To top it off, the Samsung A52-S is generally found slightly cheaper.

But the new S21Fe is a joke, and so is the new A53… avoid those more expensive downgraded models.

Curious why don't you like bluetooth headphones?

    • we have terrible reception at my work, and using bluetooth headphones makes the lag even worse so I need to have headphone jack. Also I have bizarrely small ears (it would seem) and have tried quite a few brands (all $100 and less though) and can never find anything that don't fall out. Based on how often that happens I don't want to spend heaps on more expensive ones when mostly wired earbuds (or over the head bluetooth ones when I am at home) are fine.

      • Try getting hooked one..mpow are good .

    Motorola – EDGE 20 FUSION 5G $420

Don't do it. I grabbed it pretty cheap on sale at JB when I needed a phone urgently as mine broke. Worst mistake ever.

The biggest complaint that's found all over the Lenovo forums is the touchscreen issues. Both in games and even simple Google searches there will be ghost touches or it'll skip touching altogether. For typing this is a big thing as it'll autocorrect to completely different words since it didn't register half the keys and I'm not even typing fast.

The phone gets very hot very quickly, like you can feel the heat emitting through the screen.

    • Thanks! That was #1 on my list so really glad for the heads-up :)

    • A family member just got the Edge 20 Pro and it's been great. Shame about the issues you're having 🙁

      • Completely different phone. That's not their budget phone so I'd expect it to be flawless.

    Gone off Pocophones?

    • +1

Don't mind the pocophone but need to get something today or tomorrow (worried I will cut myself on the broken glass plus it is doing strange possessed things so thinking it won't last too much longer), and I didn't think there was anything local in Melb that sold pocophones?

  • Sorry I got some of the prices wrong (we get discounts through work at a heap of different stores so I need to check each one, and they not all of them have all models).

I have upped my budget a bit, so now trying to chose between these 3 models (or anything else under $575 firm)

    Samsung A 52s 5g - $574.10
    Samsung A53 5g - $559.20
    Samsung Galaxy A52 - $466.10

Which of these is the best to get?

I believe the A53 5g has no phone jack, but a better screen? Unless the screen is that much better I think I would prefer the phone jack tbh

  • actually just realised I could get a convertor plug to change 3.5mm to usb c (plus I will also try hook on earbuds, as obviously wireless would also be great), so now back to deciding between all 3. Any opinions? Going to go and get it tomorrow
