Calling all Cardists

My son is right into cardistry. If you share this hobby, can you tell me what cards you use and where you get them?

Thanks.

There's a joker in every deck.

      • He's just speaking from the heart

          He's the king of hearts.

  • How do I become a Cardist?
All you need to start practicing cardistry is a deck of regular playing cards. Learn a few basic techniques first to get used to handling the deck, such as the mechanic's grip, the pivot, and the angel move. Get plenty of cardistry practice by using trainer decks and watching online tutorials.

    sounds like just regular cards.

    • Yes, but quality makes a difference, and you can chew through cards if you practice a lot.

If you're chewing them, you're doing it very wrong.

      • Are standard Bicycle cards or used casino cards good enough?

        • Yes, thanks. He's been buying Bicycle Standards off Amazon. They're pretty good and not too pricey. Poker cards are a bit bigger than standard cards.

        • Bicycle cards, or if you want “nicer” looking cards, a lot of the bigger YouTube magicians (eg; Bao Magic) releases special decks which you can buy

  • Plastic cards. Brands like Angel, Copag or Kem. You will pay a little more for them, but they will outlast paper playing cards. PVC are the cheaper version, acetate are the more expensive plastic cards.

I worked in a casino and worked with both high quality paper and plastic cards and the plastic cards were way more expensive but would outlast the paper cards by almost 10x the usage.

  • What did you end up going with?

My son is happy with Bicycle Standard cards. You see these a lot on American cardist's YouTube channels and he likes having the same gear. He also bought a deck of plastic cards and really likes them for some things, but says they don't 'fan' as well as cardboard cards.

When I asked posted my question, I thought there might be someone who was importing amazing cards from some little known nation of incredible card makers, but I doubt that really exists.

      • cool. I feel like alot of videos use bicycle cards but not sure if it is standard or another version.
        Cardistry seems fun.
Wish I had time to learn it haha.

Pipermagic has tons of good decks otherwise look for sellers like billionbuck or mehow magic on eBay aus.
I’d stay away from kem and Copag decks as they are overpriced and don’t fan great…
