Booking Emirates Flights through Qantas Platform

Hi, hoping for some assistance.
It seems that booking my Emirates Mel-Lon, then Ath-Mel flights later this year are cheaper to book through Qantas than Emirates themselves.
I wondered whether this was due to not having to pay for seat selection as a Qantas frequent flyer member however the Qantas platform doesn't allow nominating seats if booking Emirates through the Qantas platform.

In turn, I assume the price difference is purely that when I do contact Emirates to select my seats, they will sting me then and in fact, I won't have saved any money. Is that right?

And for a bonus.. Qantas, Singapore Airlines, or Emirates. What is everyone's preference? Economy of course!

Emirates. Based on quality of food, hospitality and entertainment.

One reason they could be cheaper through Qantas is the way that the codeshare is usually structured. Each airline is given an allocation to sell; so Emirates might be able to sell 75% of seats on a plane and Qantas 25%. Each airline does their own load management and pricing in order to sell their seats and you could end up in situations where Emirates have sold all their seats; but Qantas has not or think they won't; so they drop the price on their seats on the plane.

Nothing sinister in the price difference - it's more a function of the fact that Qantas has a comprehensive joint venture agreement with Emirates and can sell these flights almost as if they are actually operating/running them (or a part of them), so Emirates is not dictating the price 100% (full neutrality is known as being "metal neutral", and their JV is not quite that). The prices are not usually significantly different though.

Seat selection wise, I'm pretty sure there's no difference in the cost, BUT you're more likely to encounter seat selection errors when booking under a Qantas flight number (but by and large it's been reliable). Seat selection needs to be done through the Emirates website once your ticket has been issued.

    Other differences:
    - if you're in the loyalty game, your points and status credit earn under an Emirates flight number vs a Qantas flight number may be different. If you're crediting to a non-Emirates or Qantas program, those other programs will also recognise the flights differently/not recognise them at all (effectively, if you book under a Qantas flight number, you're more or less stuck with earning Qantas points for the flights)

    • your ticket may have different rules (changes, refunds, fees, etc) depending on who issues the ticket and which flight numbers are on the ticket.

    • if it's booked as a Qantas ticket, you'll need to contact Qantas for help (e.g. cancelling or changing flights), and their phone wait times have been less than stellar. Likewise, if you need a refund, a Qantas ticket will be subject to Qantas refund processes + timeframes rather than those of Emirates.

    For your bonus question:
    1. Singapore Airlines has my vote - excellent (and consistent) service and comfort even in economy + great transit experience (usually - unless you're caught by any covid restrictions). They're usually a little more expensive though.
    2. Emirates is second mainly because of price. Their economy class is actually quite dense so not particularly comfortable, but not terrible either. Service can be inconsistent. Entertainment system is excellent.
    3. Qantas comes in third mainly because their direct flights from Australia into Europe (London right now, plus Rome in the future) are too long for economy IMO. Their service to London via Singapore will start back up again shortly which will be good, but those flights are pretty popular and usually more expensive than the Dubai route.

I would put Qatar and Etihad ahead of Emirates, but each has its own problems - Qatar's reputation took a hit after the strip search incident in 2020; Etihad doesn't have any major controversies like that, more just that transit at Abu Dbabi is not as good.

    • Thank you, do you know if the EK website will then charge me for basic seats?

  • Im trying to find some flights from Perth to Europe with Emirates and cant find any.. (With points)
I definitely prefer Emirates over Qantas and would pay a little bit more for it

  • I prefer whichever airline is cheapest as long as it's not Scoot or Malaysia Airlines

  • I didn't enjoy flying the Emirates A380 in economy. With 11 seats in each row it feels like a sea of humanity on board.

I wouldn't choose Qantas either because they are tight on food.

Qantas and Singapore don't fly to Athens so you can't choose them

    I don't mind Etihad.

    • it's 'only' 10 across in economy on larger planes like the a380….

  • After you book, you will get the EK reference numbers - it is there, just hidden in the QF email. Then you can do your seat selections via EK's website online etc.

    • Thank you, do you know if the EK website will then charge me for basic seats?

  • Just in case anyone comes along this in future; if booking online via Qantas site for a Qantas codeshare with Emirates (i.e. a Qantas flight number but operated by Emirates) you can use the booking reference number in the 'E-Ticket Itinerary & Receipt' PDF that Qantas will send you right after booking to manage your booking and choose seats on the Emirates website.

I bought a flex economy ticket and did not need to pay for any seat selection except for if I wanted an extra legroom seat .
