Buying Officeworks Ex-Display Laptop. Thoughts?

Hi Everyone,

Just wondering if anyone had any experience in buying Officeworks ex display/demo product specifically laptop…

I know it's probably turned on 24/7 for several months but they still offer same 30 days change of mind period and 1 year warranty…

The price is discounted to more than 50% original price so is it worth the risk?

Has anyone had any experience buying ex display laptop from OW?

Cheers

  • I bought a display model 3D printer from Officeworks and turned out it had many missing pieces they didn't declare/know about. Turned out useless as couldn't source the parts. I'm sure others have had better experiences buying ex-display items.

Neither anecdotal experience benefits you really. You decide if you want to take the gamble and do your due diligence on whether the product works fine or has defects and/or condition not worth living with. We can't inform you on that based on other items. Main things to focus on are the screen, battery life and hard drive (esp if mechanical) if they've been on 24/7 on display.

    • Did you get a full refund?

      • I sold it on to someone that wanted to gut it for the bespoke power supply module to put into his own similar machine so worked out in the end.

  • Would hate to see the warranty invalidated because it was damaged in shop (relatively unlikely though).

  • +3

Battery will 100% be cooked since its always plugged in

  • 50% off a recently released model is great, 50% off a 2-3 year old model is meh plus what HairyChickens said.

  • +1

Honestly, pay the extra for the peace of mind knowing someones dirty hands have not been touching it all year around.

    • The number of kids who would have touched it would be staggering

  • I bought one once and it's trackpad was partially broken from day one. I worked around it for its entire life of 3 years

  • Calculate in a new battery, trackpad and keyboard.

  • Thanks for the replies guys. Yep I thought about the battery before but then I was thinking it's not that much different than my work laptop which is plugged in continuously for years. If hypothetically the battery now only holds about 80% and I only pay less than 50% then I should still come out on top right (slightly)?

It seems to be a recent-ish model too since I found one with identical spec on OW website but how do I check this exactly? The model number is hp pavilion x360 14-dw1514tu.

  • I wouldn't do it.

Warranty and free repairs are one thing, but the amount of time you spend setting up a laptop to your own preferences including the installation of software etc… and the price of any data that you may lose as a result of a screwed up laptop is just not worth risking. Not to say that it won't happen on a brand new laptop - it's about trying to minimise that risk.
