Best Low Profile - GTX1650 Vs New AMD RX6400

Hi All

Need some advice from some computer experts.

Im looking to beef up one of our old work computers (HP 800 G2) with a new graphics card. I was planning on putting a low profile 1650 in it (around $250-300) but AMD just released its own low profile competitor - the RX6400 which has an rrp of $249.

Anyone offer any pros or cons on the two? I know the 1650 will work ok (based on reddit/youtube posts) but assume the 6400 may be a better option?

Thanks

  • I would pick the RX 6400:
    - has support for Radeon Super Resolution (RSR)
    - Freesync support over HDMI

These would be important in getting higher frames/things still looking ok with lower frames.

    • Downside is missing video encoder/decoder - your CPU shouuuuld be able to pickup the slack with Intel QSV but if streaming is important to you, you will need to double check
    • Streaming to twitch do you mean, or streaming to my phone/tablet etc to play remote in bed?

      • I would guess both wouldn't be ideal without a dGPU video encoder/decoder

  • AMD RX6400 has HDMI 2.1 so if you want to convert to a HTPC and feed a modern OLED…
it may be the go, but no encoding of v1. some reports of no 265 encoding either.
On the up side, no additional power connector required and low TDP.

I have the exact same erquirements.

Bought both kids the Dell Optiplex 9020 units seen so many times on OCB. (https://www.ebay.com.au/str/australiancomputertraders)

Now they want to play games !

    Need extra RAM
    Larger SSD Hard Drive
    & a Low Profile Graphics card !

Good video about this card - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raz0CmKi_g4

After watching this, I'd be looking for a low priced GTX 1650S

    Thoughts ?

    • Thanks for that video!

I am also looking for a card for a slim profile Dell desktop,
and the most up-to-date one seems to be the RX 6400 from $239 (PLE).

Have you found any GTX 1650 models which are half height, single slot?
(and worth the $60 approx extra cost? or at the same price as the AMD?)

Google suggests the max wattage supported due to the weak PSU may be 65W,
so it's possible the GTX 1650 power requirements are too high.

      • Didnt have much luck, except this maybe ?
PCCASEGEAR - $279.00 - Includes plate for Low Profile PC's (in the product description)

        Or this one - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/184814118783

But yes, re the PSU requirements.

Maybe going for the RX 6400 after all

Yes, PLE Heatherton, 5 minutes from me.

A quick google for power usage of my dell optiplex, seems it only has a 180W PSU. The maximum load for a graphics card is probably 58-61watts continous max.

I'm not actually certain PLE has any in stock, the webpage suggests the item is in "stock transfer" either to or from the VIC warehouse.

          The RX 6400 should be a match because it's only 53W. https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/compare/Radeon-HD-7950-R9…

  • The Asus 1650 is on special this week for $259 ($40 off) at Umart - https://www.umart.com.au/product/asus-geforce-gtx-1650-oc-4g…

    • Dang - Just picked up the RX 6400 Low Profile from PLE Heatherton. (last one)

I just installed it (To change the plate to a Low Profile plate (included), you have to undo 10 x tiny screws and take the sheild off !)

Stupid design… Why not just have a hole where you can unscrew the bl00dy screw.

Anyway, the installation was easy, on a Dell Optiplex 9020.
Downloaded the driver - Simple install

      Minecraft runs a treat !

No problems - I will come back to you with a Screen Shot as soon as I can.

Had no issues with the Radeon RX 6400 Low Profile at all.

    FYI
I also updated the SSD to this - https://www.ple.com.au/Products/633329/Crucial-BX500-480GB-S…
And increased the RAM to this - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/115139761053?var=415206959289

Sorry - I don't have the original benchmark to compare against.

Also, just saw this - https://www.pccasegear.com/products/57800/powercolor-radeon-…

  • Super cheap!

    • Yep - Bought another for my other Optiplex

  • Only thing could impact your decision is the fact the new RX6400 using PCI gen 4 while the GTX1650 using PCI gen 3 (most the old system using).
Watching this does not give me much info of which one will be better to be honest, it is game to game differences.
