Help a 34yo Noob with Parts to Build My First PC Please (Budget $1k)

Hi guys and gals,

Looking for some advice and tips.

I did just buy a PS5 so that has lowered my budget on the PC to under (including monitor) 1K if possible :(

Wanting to build a PC for light gaming for games that aren't on ps5 (Halo,AOE) this will be my work PC but will also use for some games.

I mainly just need advice on the below:

  • Best budget Video Card to get for 1080P(not sure I can get 4k on the budget) I think a 3060 is past the budget what's good under this?
  • Motherboard with Wi-Fi that will allow me to upgrade the CPU/video card in 2-3 years
  • CPU that can handle games on medium to low setting and basic applications when I work. Maybe a 5 5600X 4.6GHz?
  • Ram I'll just get 2x8gig
  • Bonus points if you can recommend a budget monitor for my PS5 and PC to share thinking 27inch

Thanks everyone all the best!

Since you have a PS5, if you can wait, just wait for a techfast deal that's ~1k and has an RTX 3060 or RX 6600 XT. Would typically be hard to beat that.
Without getting complicated, whatever motherboard, psu, ram, and cpu they pair with it will be absolutely fine, unless you read some educated red flags in the comments.

Pointless using a sub $1000 PC for gaming, just use your PS5 (will have better graphics, gameplay, etc) …

For 1080p gaming a AMD6600XT or RTX3060 will be good, but takes over half the budget :/

AMD B550 motherboards are solid and cheap, something like MSI B550 Tomahawk (~$200) or MSI B550 A-Pro (~$180) ..

I believe the AMD 5600 was just released, cheaper and just as good as 5600X …

AMD like RAM speed, anything CL16 @ 3600Mhz would be an advantage …

"Get a B550 MB, drop in an RTX3060, and then…"
    "Whoa, whoa. Just…just stop."
    "What's wrong?"
"They said they're 34 years old."
"Well that completely changes all of my recommendations"

$1000 for a gaming rig including 27" monitor? Simply not going to happen. If you want to play both MS and Sony exclusives, sell the PS5, buy a gaming rig and get a second hand PS4. Otherwise, wait.

Motherboard with Wi-Fi that will allow me to upgrade the CPU/video card in 2-3 years

There's not really a good option for a CPU upgrade path right now. If you go with AMD then the current socket, AM4, is at the end of the line. At best you could go from a 5600X to a 5800X3D which is already out. Intel is rumoured to have an upgrade path between the current 12th gen and upcoming 13th gen, but probably not with a big speed bump.

Your best bet will probably be something like

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/690084

    This one plus

    https://www.umart.com.au/product/aoc-27in-fhd-ips-144hz-adap…

Plus any cheap keyboard and mouse combination.

Below this prices, you're just making a compromise in the long run.

    OR

    B560 wifi mobo

    https://www.umart.com.au/product/msi-mag-b560m-mortar-wifi-l…

i3 10105f (Can handle most of the games, Upgrade to better CPU later on)

    https://www.umart.com.au/product/intel-core-i3-10105f-4-core…

    3060

    https://www.umart.com.au/product/asus-geforce-rtx-3060-phoen…

anyway nevermind, already $894 with no SSD, PSU, RAM, and Case.

    Deal is the way.
    Cheers!

    • Haha thanks mate. It's good info, I can always wait for good sales for parts (just need to figure out what parts).

I would prioritise the PS5 as the main gaming device.
…maybe soon you can get a MiniPC which has the r7-6800h inside. That seems like the sort of specifications you require now. You can upgrade to a proper Desktop PC later, while this little thing can become your HTPC (or sell it).

        Why?
Because I don't think you will get a good experience with a $1000 PC in today's market. Even though GPU prices were "crashing" they're going up again, and it will never be back to normal prices like when the GTX 1070Ti and GTX 1080Ti released. The good news is that Intel's ARC dGPUs are coming sooner or later for 1080p/ 60fps/ High Settings gaming. Then there's the RX-7000 series and the RTX-4000 series coming soon. So it might be more appropriate to wait. On top of that, Intel's current 12th-gen CPUs are good not great, and that is expected with next year's 13th-gen as well. So that's not a platform I would rush into. Whereas in AMD, they're finalising the old Ryzen platform (AM4), better to avoid if possible, with some pretty solid upgrades for upcoming AM5 platform. However, their first-gen processor (Zen4) is very lukewarm. It will be somewhat of a refresh of their previous tech and act as a launchpad for the AM5 platform, their big upgrade is coming in Zen5.

        • Thanks for the tips, this is the stuff that I needed to know.

Like most things, you'll save money buying second hand - look around on eBay or FB Marketplace.
