Handymen of OzBargain, What's It Cost to Install Internal Doors?

Ok so I have about 8 internal doors to install. They're the hollow white ones with the engraved 4 panel design. The standard ones you see in houses. Now there's someone who I've given great services to before who said he "owes" me one. So I asked him for a quote to install each door and the quote came back astronomical.

Handymen of Oz, what is the approximate cost of installing these doors?

Not including painting or the door itself. Just the installation. For reference this is the door and we need 8 of them installed.

    $0

  • What does installation include? Framing? Brackets included? Do they need drilling? Does the frame? Handles? Locks? Latches? Stoppers?

  • Half a day at $80/h
Much more than the door sadly

    • This is reasonable. He quoted more than double that lol

  • +3

    $1127.98 give or take

    • +2

      isn't it around $68.89

      • +3

        cheaper with OW price match.

      • +2

Inflation. These days it's more like $420.69

  • Assuming the frame is already there.. why dont you just install it yourself?

    • Coz I'll f it up for sure. It won't sit properly I just know it lol. I'm very unhandy (just ask my Mrs).

I was happy to pay someone a couple hundred to get it done. But the quote from someone supposedly doing me a solid was ridiculous

      • I was happy to pay someone a couple hundred to get it done.

        Lol. Dreamin'

      • Mind sharing what the quote was? I think people will be able to give a more solid 'oof thats too much' or 'that seems reasonable' opinion.

        • $1300. For 8 internal doors that cost me $400 in total to buy. Plus will still need to get painted.

          • @bigballerbrand: That does sound pretty reasonable, currently and regrettably going through doors plus and its $500 for one door. That includes all the components and cutting. Painting you can do yourself, thats the easy part

  • If and only if all of the door hinges and handles are at exactly the same position then say $400, but if they are different then add another $400. If the doors need to be cut down then add $20 per door if they are all the same otherwise add $50 per door.

This does not include any painting or supplying handles or hinges or the doors.

If you need the old doors disposed of then add $25 per door.

    • Thanks for the honest input. This is what I needed to know. Jesus it's expensive lol.

      • We had about 12 done, some he smashed out in 1-2 hours because it was a perfect fit, others took 6 hours because the frame wasn’t square. I consider myself fairly handy but after seeing the effort required for ‘problematic frames’ I knew I’d be in the sh*t

        • My house is very standard. The doors are already there. With frames. Would just need to swap the doors. All sizes are standard sizes. I would assume maybe 6 hours of labor. At $100 an hour 600.

          • @bigballerbrand: $100 an hour doesn't sound cheap. A friend of friend did some doors for me for $50 per hour. He did a great job. Felt like I was ripping him off at the end so paid more!

          • @bigballerbrand: Didn’t you just answer your own question?

        • I have replaced one door before and it was easy as it was a standard size, but then I checked out some of the other doors and they were non standard and stopped as it was going to be way too hard to cut the doors down and make sure the cut was square and in one go. If I have a proper table saw in a big table then I could do it, but with a circular… no way.

I ended up not replacing the other doors, but just painting them and patching the obvious issues with car bog like they do with car panels.

Expensive yes but it’s not that easy to do it properly, especially in houses that aren’t square… be thankful it’s not a front door as they are $300+ each install only

I was quoted $100 per door (for 8-10 doors) about 10 years ago.

  • My Mother in Law paid $200 including the door installed each (Brisbane) I felt that was pretty reasonable because they're a pain in the ass especially if the frame is out etc.

  • hanging doors is relatively straight forward.

I bought a builders excess brand new door off market place for $25 (exact same door as above - 4 panel hollow).

it was slightly taller than the frame (and perfect width) so I cut the door down so it was ~10mm shorter than the frame. (scoring the cut with a sharp exacto knife and then hand saw).

there were existing hinge holes on the frame.so i attached the hinges .

then got 2 5mm shivs to put under the door, which I placed in "open" position to the frame so I could line up the hinge. marked the hinge holes, took down the door and drilled the holes. put the door up and to "open" position and added 1 screw to each hinge of the door to "test run" .

that was fine so i added the remaining screws to the hinge.

also had to install a handle. the handle came with a cutting guide. it was also relative straight forward. just needed a 20mm drill bit for the barrel, and a chisel to cut in for the face plate.

frame was square, and floor is tile over a concrete slab so that was flat so there was no major concern with the frame being not true
