Suggestions for HUD (Heads up Display)

Long time lurker.

Always enjoyed content here in forums.

I just got a 2015 Car and it doesn't show speed in display. I got used to read my speed from display rather than gauge. Now even though i tried getting used to "Gauge Reading", it is getting difficult for my eyes. After some search realized HUD will solve my issue and i am in search of decent HUD unit. I know after market accessories sometimes feels tacky, but want to get some opinions on these three variants. Looking for comments with practical use.

If someone helps me in deciding most practical one among these three, will appreciate it.

I have been using the HUD for almost 2 years. My car doesn't have digital speedo and this is very much needed as I can really go at the real speed limit. All cars are showing higher speed than normal. Mine shows 4 KM above the actual speed (ie at 96 it will show 100).

I have this one and it works with OBD2. Turns on and off with the engine ignition.

The problem with all these "projecting" HUDs is that the oncoming cars will see the LCD that shows the speed/other info. This will be distracting to the other drivers. Just stick a good black sticky paper and neatly cut it.

This has made driving/speed management so easy.

    • Thanks for your suggestion. This seems minimalistic, may be i will try this model.

  • TIL, never knew this (after market HUDs) was a thing, lol.

    • me too. i didnt know these things exist. lol.

I bought the cheapest from ebay, around $23 at the time. Plugs into the obd2 port and ready to go, by default shows only speed but can do other functions. It is also the smallest giving the least distraction, easiest to mount. Top of perspex needed a black felt pen run over it to kill a small reflection on windscreen.

I can’t believe that people are so obsessed with going exactly the speed limit. If you are that worried about fines, drive a bit slower. Use the speedo that normally reads high and be done with it.

That, plus you should be able to judge your speed close enough by traffic around you or a lot of the time. If you’ve been driving long enough you should also be able to estimate your speed in a familiar vehicle without even looking at the dial.

    • I can't believe no one's commented on this:

Now even though i tried getting used to "Gauge Reading", it is getting difficult for my eyes.

If you have trouble reading the speedometer, you should consider getting your eyes looked at…

may be you need psychological brain assessment for general reading ability. What i meant was "Unlearning" and learning new things for these trivial things is difficult. with this kind of thinking, i believe you are danger to society.

        • it is getting difficult for my eyes.

Sorry, but the way I read this is that you're having trouble actually reading the speedometer, not adjusting to using it instead of a HUD.

i assume you never drove in city traffic or even if you drive, i dont think you ever followed rules.

Your suggestions are absolute rubbish and may be you need to rethink on your ideas on driving. will be good for you and your fellow drivers.

All cars have a speedo. It’s enough to keep the majority of drivers doing the right speed.

City traffic is much easier to drive to limits as there are so many other vehicles around and congestion lowers the speed you can do.

I manage just fine, thank you for your concern. I haven’t contributed to revenue raising for a very long time.

    • …you should also be able to estimate your speed in a familiar vehicle without even looking at the dial.

There's no way anyone (even the HWP cops who are supposedly trained to do this) can estimate their speed down to within the speed cameras' 3km/h tolerance.

I felt the same years back when I changed cars from a golf with digital speed read out to a car with analogue gauges.

I tried a number of these gadgets, but without exception they were cheap and tacky. One was like #1 on your list, in daylight it wasn’t bright enough to be legible and at night it wasn’t clear. It’s a low tech light projection onto a cheap piece of plastic, not a laser onto glass and the pictured results in the ad won’t be real.

Another was like #3 which was even worse. Even if they provide some crappy film to stick on your windshield, there is going to be a double image from the laminated windshield glass.

Of your list I’d potentially try #2. But honestly after a couple of months I stopped fixating on it and got used to driving without it.

Some cars will give you a digital readout of the set cruise control speed even if they have analogue speedos (eg 2015 Mazda 3) so you could check for that on your car as well.

    • Thank you. may be i will try one of these for a month and see if it woks for me. Cruise control suggestions seems good. will try that as well.

In my corolla, I use one like this. It works fine. Once a month I have to disconnect the cable and reconnect. The HUD does not detect signals from OBD during the startup. But it never happens during a trip, only during startup. The light reflected from the windscreen is polarised. I don't use a reflective film on the windscreen. I am not sure it is because of this the bounced light is polarised. Sometimes it's hard to see HUD with my sunglasses. During the first few days, I got a headache, I think my eyes are not used to constantly focusing to HUD and far. But now I can't drive without the HUD.

  • I'm in the same boat and was wondering how your experience has been so far and what did you end up getting ?

  • Looking for some tried and tested recommendations

Im using this HUD from amazon. It works okay during the day and night.

You dont need an OBD2 input to have the speed show up as it works on GPS You can connect it to the OBD2 port and get extra features.

    • so i'm guessing its powered via cigarette charger ?

      • Yes, but if you use the obd2 port you don't require the cigarette lighter.

  • Hi @Janar24 , Did you end up buying and using any of them ? If so, can you please share your review

    Thanks
