Where to Buy Foreign Cash at a Good Rate

I am traveling overseas and I need to buy foreign cash. Any recommendations for places that sell at a good rate?

I usually found that the exchange rate at your destination is better than in Australia.

    • As above, you'll generally always get a better rate in the Country you're travelling to.

Just change a little bit here so you're not without money when you land, but then go to their downtown area and change AUD to local.

    • Thank you

It might help if you stated the currency and amount you were looking for.

    • Indonesian Rupiah, β‰ˆ$500<

As others have said, get it in Indonesia.

be veerrrry careful. While most operators are trustworthy - many are not. Watch for slight of hand tricks etc!

@geoffs87: Isn't that the same anywhere?

            • +1

@GG57: probably, i havent experienced it personally in any other place than Bali, and i've travelled a fair bit!

  • Converting fiat πŸ’΅ in SEA tends to be cheaper with closer spreads and lower commission.

Converting fiat πŸ’΅ in Western countries like πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί is a ripoff.

It's just $500…no point thinking of trying to save a few dollars just for changing over $500.

If you said $10k, that's a different story.

Yes buy it at the destination. If you have a fee free debit card, withdraw it from overseas ATMs.

I don't understand why people get currency before they travel overseas. literally every airport in the world has ATMs, and better exchange rates.

    • +3

I disagree. Usually airport ATMs will be off branded and have jacked up fees.
Even if there is a major bank ATM at the airport, you may not be charged by your bank to use a foreign ATM, but the airport ATM will have a fee to use it.

      • yeah, and that's why you have a fee free CC. I don't understand why people don't get a fee free CC before they travel overseas.

and there is usually a major bank available.

Don't fall for the Balinese money exchange scammers.

    • Who are they and what's your experience with them?

      • +3

Usually a dodgy sign offering a great rate. They count out the cash in front of you but skim off a chunk of notes before handing it over, without you noticing.
Fell for it myself twice before realising it was happening. I felt like a fool because it's a known scam and I should have known better.

        • To be fair, that is not limited to Bali.

$500, $5,000 or $10,000 for holiday spending money- Citi Plus Transaction Account for ATM withdrawals

    • This. Use it at bca bri atm etc

    • I have ING is that sufficient? How does it compare to Citi

      • Not sure.

        Which ING account/card?

        • ING orange everyday account, the normal bank account with a visa debit card

          • @iceteacake: Looks like you can get your ATM fees refunded but did they charge a foreign exchange transaction fee?

            Citi Plus Transaction Account doesn't.

I use Revolut. Can get Apple Pay or a physical card. Can see the rates of what you want to exchange and load up your account. Living in uk for six months so working for us.
    Otherwise wise is similar option

    • OP only wants about $500 worth of IDR. Probably not worth the effort for that one.

      • Maybe. It’s quick and easy. Can sort it before travelling and just get cash out from atm.
No need to deal with scammers etc as mentioned multiple times above

  • There's a local Western Union here that offers great rates. Convert maybe $2000.

Then keep the rest in my Citibank Plus card and withdraw from that.
