Lost Nintendo Switch in Rental Car

Update: happy ending pending - $110 service and courier fee to get it sent back but it’s found apparently, holy hell

I'm 99.99% sure my Nintendo Switch was left in a rental car yesterday, the company claims online that they 'check the cars for items thoroughly' - but so far it doesn't seem like they have done so. Tried their head office and the site office and I keep getting run around responses. I've contacted Nintendo…is there anything else I can do? Screaming because I've lost about 6 physical games as well along with it. It appears Nintendo can tell you if it appears online again. Emailed EB with the serial number just in case someone tries to trade it in

  • NSW Police has a Lost Property form you can fill in: https://portal.police.nsw.gov.au/s/lost-property-definition

Not sure what good it will do, but if nothing else, it'll give you a reference number to claim from your insurance, if applicable.

If you do replace it in future, would be good to stick an AirTag or similar in the case so you can track it.

Why did you leave it there?

Stuffed up and forgot about it: now flown out of the state and the people in the office claim to have no idea

      • Sounds like one of them took it.

I reckon they have, and found themselves a prize.

  • You should have offered a 10% finders bonus.

    • Yeah I said in a follow up email I’d pay $100 to whoever manages to find it, just a shame I didn’t keep the serial
numbers of the games written down somewhere

You can try the "my little son/daughter" is crying non stop ……….

Unless you have more Adult games with it ( Shooters )

        • ah yeah its all kids stuff…and the mario games…checking gumtree and fb marketplace religiously

    • Update: well pack and send is basically getting it

  • Commiserations. Leaving stuff behind (and trusting the staff to be honest about it) is one of my biggest fears.

I left a bunch of random stuff in a hotel room interstate once, the most exy thing being a Samsung wall charger, and even though it's not worth as much as a switch and games, the hotel said they could post back to us as long as we paid for postage, so I suppose it depends.

I still think people are shit though…despite the above.

No travel or portable contents insurance?

    • I need to double check but I vacantly remember something about getting insurance against covid-19; my guess is already as it was through jetstar it won’t cover it - I shouldn’t have taken it and just got a switch lite for the journey and just taken digital games

    • Samsung wall charger, and even though it's not worth as much as a switch and games, the hotel said they could post back to us as long as we paid for postage, so I suppose it depends.

I left the exact same thing in a hotel once, plugged into a wall and just forgot it was there, rang them a day later and they couldn't find it. Some prick at the hotel nicked it, it wasn't a cheap hotel either.

  • I left a tablet mount attached to the back of the drivers seat headrest in a rental car. Called the site office same day. They said they looked and couldn’t find it. I know for a fact it was there. It was worth less than $20. Not a big deal, but if they couldn’t even get my low value item from an extremely precise location back to me, I have grave fears for your switch.

    • Yeah it’s suss

    • Most likely they either (1) have the vehicle rented out to another customer and can't check or (2) can't be bothered to track down the car and look, and (3) can't be bothered with the hassle of posting it back to you.

      • Unlikely they rented it out again by the time I called. It was only about 2 hours after I dropped it back. And I was offering to pick it up - so no postage required. I think you're on the money with "can't be bothered" though.

        • for low value items like these the cleaning staff take them for themselves, think phone mounts, charging cables, sunglasses, earphones etc

for high value items they are definitely handed in, anything larger than a portable item. If a customer rings up and it's found someone took it home they'll get reprimanded. Otherwise it gets held in bosses' office for couple of months and if noone claims it then it goes out to staff or auction for bbq

i'm not personally part of the industry.
