Tablet Holder / Cradle for Car Dashboard?

Hi
Looking for suggestions on a tablet holder for car dashboard.
The goal is to use a cheap dedicated tablet as a sat-nav and media station in an older car (for my parents)

Anybody tried to diy Teslafy their car? πŸ˜€

    • I was checking ebay and ali myself, but difficult to see /decide from the photos which ones are worth the wait.

If you don't want to wait try Amazon for a faster experience, most likely the same sellers but better photos and more expensive.

        https://www.amazon.com.au/OHLPRO-HolderDash-Windshield-Dashb…

        • Looks promising, i like the way it can "hang" down the dash so it doesent block the view and as an added benefit catches the AC cooling it πŸ‘

  • Sat-Nav use is OK, but not watching videos while the car is moving

    • Thanks for the link πŸ‘, by media I meant audio. My parents have no interest in consuming video in car πŸ™‚πŸ‘

    • That seems too involved, I need a quick but sturdy fix. Mostly so the sat-nav would be on a bigger screen for easier use and viewing.

    diy Teslafy their car?

I thought so, looking at the title…

    (for my parents)

Maybe get them to change their car.

    • πŸ‘πŸ˜€ thats an option but in anothe galaxy budget wise.

Depending on the car, there are kits available that include everything to fully integrate a tablet into the dash of your car. Worth doing a search of ebay etc.

  • Why not a car gps? it would come with the mounting kit, would not need internet, usually are better navigation system.

    • Mostly want tablet for bigger screen -easier viewing, and upgadebility.
Dedicated large screen sat-navs are qute expensive and limited.

Not to mention SAt-Navs, don't use Waze or Google Maps usually.

  • Check the road rules in NSW but in Victoria it's illegal to mount and use a tablet (visual display unit) on a dashboard. Emergency vehicles are excluded. What size is the tablet? Might need the biggest mobile phone you can buy instead.

@pegaxs will know the NSW ruling in this.

  • This One is quite good, unless the vent is too deep. I am looking for something to glue on it, so it catches the rear of the vent.

  • Yeah that's gonna end well in the Aussie Summer heat, as well as always having the tablet on charge will destroy the battery, as well as mum n dad trying to drive and unlock the tablet, or navigate menus…

    • This just sounds like very negative mindset πŸ˜€
By these arguments most sat-navs, dash cameras and phone holders would be a bad idea in AU

        • Portable sat-navs - designed to be always on, so have batteries to allow for it, though everyone recommends they're taken off the dash when not in use so they don't sit in the extreme heat. Most now feature voice control, or at least very easy to use input controls. The software is very unlikely to freeze/crash, and will turn on as soon as the car turns on.

        • Dash Cameras - Don't require being used during day-to-day use, don't provide a distraction as most don't have screens facing the driver, batteries are small, most are out of direct sunlight as they're mounted high on the windscreen

        • Phone Holders - yes, they are a distraction as you're then using your phone while driving rather than using a dedicated Android Auto/Apple Carplay head-unit with proper voice control.

Might wanna come up with better examples of products that aren't designed to be in a car 100% of the time, like a tablet would be.

But hey, you do you, just don't come back here when they get distracted from the road because the tablet stuffed up and they're trying to control it while driving and veer out of their lane…

Or here's a thought, replace the head-unit with an Android Auto/Apple Carplay one for around $500 and rest easy knowing they have voice control and don't actually need to touch the device, and it's designed to turn on and off with the car etc

omg mate, these arguments are entirely unconvincing πŸ˜ƒπŸ€¦

Car sat-navs use same type of batteries as tablets. You can remove the tablet same as sat-nav. Latest android / android auto has voice command. I have not had an android device crash yet by just running navigation. I guess it can happen but seems like a rare occurrence. But even so I don't understand this problem.
I dont see how a tablet for navigation is any more distracting than dedicated sat-nav. In fact my point was to provide a bigger - easier to read display.

It's almost a definition of a dashcam, that it is used day to day all the time the car is running. Most have same type of batteries as tablets and are almost always (I think all of the ones I have seen) exposed to direct sunlight most of the day.

Phones mounted on the windscreen are also in direct sunlight and I see many like this in vans and delivery trucks that must be out day to day.

I'm thinking of using something like the mount suggested from Amazon, hanging down from the dash - as not to obstruct the windscreen and get some cooling from the AC vents. I wouldn't be buying a new tablet but even if I did the budget for holder+ tablet would be $250 max.

@ripprind: πŸ˜‚ Lol as I said there's better, more long-term solutions which are a far safer option

But hey, maybe I care more about my parents and actually know what they'd put up with on a day-to-day basis, and that's not plugging in a tablet at the start of every trip πŸ˜‚

Just make sure their car insurance is up to scratch for the inevitable break-in, and their health insurance is up to scratch for the inevitable accident due to distraction

            Have fun πŸ‘

In dash screen that replaces the car radio. Fits into a DIN or double DIN slot. It wont be the size of an iPad, but it will be a lot safer and neater and wont draw the ire of police.
