Car Mats: Dealer or after Market?

We are picking up a Kia Stonic sometime this month (hopefully)
I see the car mats / carpet are $177 on KIA website

I checked a few After Market places
fitmycar : No stock ; no prices
carmatsaustralia had a set for $92 but they are out of stock

carmatsonline has a set for $85 ;
https://www.carmatsonline.com.au/stonic/

rubbertree has a few options ranging from $99 (carpet) to $199 (Platinium)
https://www.rubbertree.com.au/products/carmodel?brandId=41&y…

Any advice appreciated, Ta

the official ones will probably fit ever so slightly better, but if you measure the foot well and buy a set that will fit online or in store cheaply, you can save yourself a lot of money. i bought a 10 dollar set of 4 from kmart (rubber) and didn't even bother checking if they would fit my car, but they fit well.

the dealers just charge more because they can, they don't care if they sell car mats or not, they're there to sell the cars and if they can offer an incentive of what looks to be $100 dollars of value for free (car mats) to get you off the fence and onto their side, even better.

just buy the non official versions, though at 90 dollars they seem overpriced, but it's better than 170.

I thought getting free car mats was part of the standard haggling process?

    • it's Covid era, and, yes, I paid RRP for the car and have been in purgatory for 6 months.
      Please have mercy

      • +1

I just ordered a new car two weeks ago (as mine got written off from a T-Bone accident), basically paid RRP as well and still managed to get car floor mats and a boot liner thrown in (as well as a full tank of fuel) 🤷🏻‍♀️

        • I received the exact same deal. Picked up my Yaris Cross Hybrid last week.

        • A lot now have them as standard,Nissan does.

        • +1

as well as a full tank of fuel

Mandatory requirement by TMCA for all Toyota dealers to provide vehicle with full tank of fuel at delivery.

@PinzVidz: And most Toyota cars come with floor mats from factory now…

            • @spackbace: Oh yes, true that.

            • -2

@spackbace: As does Nissan. You will also find that Ford use to have a drivers mat standard. The reason being, because of the mat getting caught up under the accelerator pedal etc.So now they are the correct shape, & pose no hinderance under the dash.

I agree haggle free mats, 1/2 price weather shields and/or trunk liner

Get aftermarket - unless the Kia logo on your mats tickle your fancy - not worth the price unless free.

  • +1

Dealer if they're thrown in otherwise you'll get higher quality mats for less aftermarket. I've used mats from Fitmycar for my last 5 cars and been very happy with them. They probably haven't had a Stonic in to template which is why they have no price. I don't recall where they're located but it might be worth contacting them and see if they're local and are willing to provide discount/free set of mats in exchange for using your car to take the measurements etc.

Aftermarket unless you has them ‘thrown in for free’.

Although, I bought genuine rubber mats for the rear of our two cars as they are a really good fit. Not many aftermarket offer full width in one piece.

Fronts in one car are genuine carpet by original owner (I took the back carpet ones out to save them from muddy kids). Other car has rubber front mats that have been through several cars.

  • Free from your dealer.

Haggle a bit, floor mats and full tank of fuel is the standard now

kmart $10 rubber ones get the job done for me

    • I don't know how people can buy rubber mats. Feels like a taxi.

      • -1

You can hose them off and they're water proof. I've always had 2 sets of mats for my 4WDs. Carpet for daily use and rubber for when heading off camping, day trips etc.

      • +1

Well even with rubber there's three ones, cheap, mid range, and expensive,

Kmart ones are cheap as fk, but they get job done
something like this is mid range just a bit more expensive than Kmart ones, but a lot better too.

As for expensive ones, I cannot talk about, because i am cheapie.

From my experience, rubber's just so much better than fabric (even though my car mats keep sliding every now and than, but they are heck a lot easy to maintain than a fabric counterpart)

      • Rubber mats just make it easier to keep clean if you are inclined to spend time on dirt, gravel, sand or grassy surfaces - that is especially if you walk, run, play on said surfaces and are likely to drag some of it back into the car.

Pull out the rubber mat, flick it and it’s clean enough to go back in. Doesn’t need vacuuming.

TBH it’d be better to have the option of vinyl floors in more models and then use carpet mats for comfort.

I usually switch over to rubber mats in winter when it's constantly raining (shitty melb weather!). It's got the edges around it so it holds the dirt and water within itself. Much easier to clean.

        • That's a good idea actually

          • @Ryanek: They're also good for driving takeaway food home when there's risk of spillage from containers in plastic bags too! haha

  • Purchase new cars, most of dealers will chuck in new car mats and full tank of petrol.

  • +1

Free car mats from the dealer or you walk away ……. tough negotiation skills required these days ;)

  • Toyota gave us rubber floor mats and cargo mat for free - picking car up in a couple of weeks

  • +1

If you want rubber mats, aftermarket ones are not usually too bad, and even the $20 ones are generally very adequate. Best to get ones with proper mounting clips for your vehicle for safety reason if you can. For carpet mats I would only go OEM because the carpet quality is often much better. But I'm picky.

We are picking up a Kia Stonic sometime this month (hopefully)

You've got nothing to lose by asking kindly if they can still throw in free car mats when you pick up the car.

You have very little negotiating leverage left if you've already paid/signed but you'll never know if you don't ask.

  • +1

Rubber tree is excellent. Got then in the Lexus/Toyota.

Fits perfectly with the safety clips too.

Better quality than the factory rubber mates from Honda. And no worse than the better ones out there (BMW, Holden - I know, sht car, but their rubbers are good).

  • +4

Whatever you get, please make sure they clip into the mounting points on the driver's side

  • Dealer ones, and tell them you want them for free. The dealer can always include mats for free if pressed.

    • They won’t.

  • +1

I've never bought a car without floor mats without haggling or even bringing it up. I thought free car mats was an old school joke from the 80s. They're super fitted now, often with locking mechanisms for the drivers side at least. Aren't they just "standard" and if you ask they pretend to be offering them for free?

  • +1

    1) Cheap rubber mats stinks and heavy, make sure it's synthetic and odourless.
    2) Fitmycar mats are Made in Australia. Support Aussie workmanship. Their mats are lined with grips on the bottom so it doesnt slide around even without the mounting hooks.
    3) Middle Finger Kia. Even my Audi is delivered with mats and the dealer threw in an additional set of OE rubbermats. The cars I bought over the years has been supplied with free mats.
    4) Look for 3D mats on Aliexpress, they are very plush, cheerful and cheap, make sure it's RightHandDrive. These are not carpet so they are easy to clean and 'cups' around your car and they hold water and dirt.

  • I bought a Kia Cerato and got a dash mat and floor mats from Fitmycar. They fit perfectly, only thing is they took a while to be delivered

    • Thanks, I did read that a bit about some of the after markets, hence why the (intended) head start

  • +1

Nissan provided mats as standard for my car, but because I do lots of sand/dirt etc I bought aftermarket with a bit of a bucket shape and plastic-y finish. They are brilliant, carpet is nigh on perfect underneath.
If your kids or you generate heaps of dirt, good aftermarket are the way to go.
