Most cost effective SSDs available now?

So I finally decided to pull the trigger and rig my early 2011 MacBook Pro with an OptiBay (clone). Last week a stack of SSD bargains were posted, but they're now all expired. Anyone able to recommend a starting point for me to start looking? I'd like at least 128gb (256 would be good for all the big, space-hungry games) and would prefer to keep the cost under $200 (or as close as possible).

  • Even though those deals were expired, I'd still contact the retailers because the prices still look pretty similar; and they both seemed pretty approachable…hit 'em up for a repechage!

Either that, or keep an eye on the 256GB Crucial M4's at Amazon this weekend; see if there's another price 'war'! ;)

  • Mac's can play big, space hungry games??

    • +1

SC2, WOW, Diablo3, Portal2? And they can dual boot Windows…

  • dont go out of your way

there will be more ssd sales next week

word in the industry is $99 120gb ssds will be common by xmas

    • That's awesome!

But. I don't want to wait until Christmas. =D

I ordered a 240gb crucuail m4 from amazon for $199 plus delivery. I got some other stuff so delivery was probably $20.
If you are happy to order from amazon for the right price, best bet is to set up an account at www.camelcamelcamel.com, which monitors amazon prices and sends you an email when it hits your price point.

That way you can specify the product you want and the price you might pay, and if it happens, you get an email!

    • I am planning to get one as well but most of the deals in amazon dont ship to australia… Is there way to get around that??

And how much do i get charged by my bank for this transaction. Do i get charged for using US$ and also for using it internationally!! I am with CBA!!

  • See this old article of Anand Shrimpi's saying he used Samsung 830-series SSDs in his Macbook Pro.
"I can vouch for the Intel SSD 510, Samsung SSD 830 and OCZ Vertex 3… My current setup is a Samsung 830 in the primary drive bay and an Intel SSD 510 in place of my optical drive, the combination works wonderfully." (http://www.anandtech.com/show/5113/apple-15inch-macbook-pro-…)
If you need more space than 128Gb and don't need blinding speed, then please consider a Seagate hybrid 750Gb XT drive, which is about half-way in performance between an SSD and a 7200rpm drive, has more space and is way cheaper than a 256Gb SSD at $US152.98+freight on Amazon. I have used two of Seagate's previous XT hybrid model and they have been great.
Optibay uses a only a 3Gb/s connection, so which SSD you choose is not so critical for speed at least.
