Need Help on Travel Insurance about Personal Liability

When looking closely on the terms of a few travel insurances, I found something that were shocking to me:

  • If you accidentally injure your mates who are travelling with you, your travel insurance won't cover them
  • If you accidentally injure anyone in a car crash, your travel insurance won't cover them

I mean WTF? The 2nd point may be OK as CTP covers that, but still, its totally unrelated to the travel insurance.
But for the 1st point, the personal liability part only covers others but not those travelling with you in an accident??? So if I understand it correctly, I could be facing any lawsuit amount coming from them and my travel insurance won't pay a dime for me! I can't understand the rationale behind this clause at all.

What is the type of insurance I need to get to protect myself from that situation?

Maybe the insurer deems it higher risk for groups of friends travelling together and their data suggests higher chance of people that know each other doing stupid things that lead to injuries e.g. pushing mate off a cliff into sea for laughs. It kinda makes sense.

    • They don't offer something major for those 99% because of that 1% reckless people?

      • Well, yes, if that costs them disproportionately. That's how insurance works, they continuously risk assess and eliminate or reduce risks by excluding things or raising premiums or rejecting policies etc.

You may be overthinking things a bit too much and need to do the same. Risk assess your situation and whether or not you really need to be paying to cover absolutely everything in life.

Wouldn’t their travel insurance cover them though?

    • Does travel insurance cover your injuries caused by others?

Even if it (or their own health insurance) does, its a protection for themselves but not me. For example, their insurance may pay for their medical bill, but they may still be able to claim from me the excess they pay their insurance company, so where is my protection in this case?

Your insurance covers you, their insurance covers them. When it's time to determine liability and collect the two insurers will argue between themselves to determine who foots the bill, or if its the same insurer for both then it's a done deal.

    • And what if they don't get any insurance for themselves?

How about you just don't injure your mates in the first place…problem solved!

    • This is the answer to every insurance event, just don't get sick, just don't cause car accident…

  • If you accidentally injure your mates who are travelling with you, your travel insurance won't cover them

    Travel alone.

Pretend you don’t know them /s.

    "They could both lose everything"

    • What else do they expect

  • …where do I even begin?

    • Friends should have their own Insurance
    • Get friends who won't sue you?
    • Don't engage in activities that end up in major injuries
    • "Should", "Won't", "Don't", 'nuff said

  • If you accidentally injure your mates who are travelling with you, your travel insurance won't cover them

Your friends travel insurance will cover them though

      • Not the question you first asked…..

Does travel insurance cover your injuries caused by others?

Yes your travel insurance covers your injuries (or the people listed on the policy injuries), not random people.

        • Yes but I also concern about the second part of my reply there. Medical cost may be covered, but there can still be other liabilities like loss of income that I may be held liable for. The protection against those is my major concern.

@justwii: It can't be more clear. Your travel insurance only covers the people listed on the policy, no one else. The other parties travel insurance will cover them and and other loss like income etc.

            • @JimmyF: Not sure if we are talking about the same thing here. Allow me to be more clear:

if I have travel insurance, I cause injuries to others (some 3rd party not my mates), my travel insurance covers their loss (on behalf of me, my liability)
if I have travel insurance, I cause injuries to my mates (those who travel with me), my travel insurance won't cover their loss, then:

              • if my mates have travel insurance, their travel insurance covers their loss
              • if my mates don't have travel insurance, I am liable to their loss (medical bills, loss of income, etc.)

I am not protected by my travel insurance for the last point here

Correct, Your travel insurance will only cover those listed on your policy. No one else.

if my mates have travel insurance, their travel insurance covers their loss

                Correct

if my mates don't have travel insurance, I am liable to their loss (medical bills, loss of income, etc.)

You may be liable, but your travel insurance won't be paying.

I mean how about you just don't hurt your 'mates'. You seem to be pretty set on doing harm to them on this trip, which is a really strange viewpoint to be having.

                • -1

@JimmyF: Hell yeah! "how about you just don't hurt your 'mates'" is exactly what I was looking for, the power to put away any accident!

                  • @justwii: What are you planning on doing that you're certainly to do damage to them that is YOUR fault?

                    • -1

@JimmyF: Seems like you are not that type of person who gets PREPARED, you only concern about things you absolutely sure.

                      • -1

@justwii: Not at all, I have travel insurance when I travel. I also don't go out of my way to PLAN to hurt people like you seem to be doing. If we as a group do something and we all get hurt, then we are all covered by our insurances.

Still love to know what you are PREPARING to do to your mates on holidays.

                        • -1

@JimmyF: Simple, I just get PREPARED that accident can happen and am looking for the right insurance out there to protect myself from accident.

                          • -1

@justwii: Sounds like you are PREPARING to hurt someone to me….. As I said, give me a example of what you are trying to cover? No insurance company is going to cover you if you push your 'mate' off a cliff and they hurt themselves. But if you you want to go hiking and they fall off by themselves, then that isn't on you, but on them and their insurance.

                            • -1

@JimmyF: My ego is not as enormous as yours to believe one can think of how an accident can play out.

@justwii: hahaha you're a strange person and glad you're not my 'friend'

  • i thought mate was banned?
just say they are not you mate just someone you tolerate to lower travel costs

    • The smart arse term in travel insurance is "travelling party"

  • Guys, jokes aside, I am quite serious about this.

    • Why not explore Group Travel Insurance if travelling together.
      Maybe it is included in…

    • stop worrying so much, you can't always cover every possible scenario in life. just don;t do anything stupid.

      • Not every but this particular scenario is what I am after

        • WHAT scenario!!? You still haven't told us.
