    It $120 cheaper only!

While a good price, I'm holding out for the expensive Mini 3 and it's reviews.

May 10th is the Mini 3!

    • That should mean cheaper mini 2 as well.

  • Any deals on the Air 2S

  • +4

Not a great price. I bought it for $789 more than a year ago.

Where can you still fly drones? Went to Port Stephens / Hunter Valley over the Easter Break and everywhere is a NFZ.

Those were the days you will just fly every where. From bridges to hotel rooftops.

    • Most councils have by laws making it illegal now unfortunately.

      • +1

Source? CASA have pretty clear guidelines on drones <250g , and they don't need to be registered.
        https://www.casa.gov.au/drones/drone-rules/drone-safety-rule…

        • +1

What do you mean source? Most park have "no drones allowed" signage. Entire Sydney city now is restricted airspace unless you have permission.

5 years ago, I went to port Stephen and just flew my drone where we had the sand boarding and quadbike. 2 weeks ago, same location, signs are everywhere that you can't fly drone.

          • +2

@Fredfloresjr: They just follow best world practices. E.g. Russia and North Korea banned ALL drones almost 10 years ago.
PS it was sarcasm if you didn't get it.

          • @Fredfloresjr: So don't take off/control it from the park. Pick a neighbouring street where you still have line of sight. Don't fly it over anyone, all the other rules etc.

            • @Abaddon: What happens if you take off in a No fly zone and then fly into one?

              • @hamwhisperer: Officially I don't know. But you're more likely to attract attention standing in the park with a controller looking at the sky than just outside. Leaves you less likely to have a confrontation with a Karen.

Even if they see the drone, by the time they see where it went you're probably on your way home to check the footage.

    • +1

For most users I think its good that DJI app lets you know of NFZ and save you from breaking any rules.. for those who still want to fly if they are not sure, there are cheap chinese drones where apps or controller dont mandate a NFZ

  • camping stores sell drones now? do they sell them at BCF now too?

  • +1

For this price, I would wait for mini3 with the potential that it can be registered here

    • What does this mean? Why couldn't the mini 2 be registered here?

  • to be honest with all the new drone restrictions now built into DJI drones and all the laws around drones now its not even worth flying them. You can't even take city shots any more. I was a very early adopter of drones so I still have alot of city footage of cities around the world back when you could.

    • +1

Sorry, I've been out drones for a while now. What do you mean you can't take city shots anymore? Are you referring to flying them through cities or just taking photos of cities in general? Was keen on going for the mini 3 when it's released!

      • yeah alot of DJI drones have built in restrictions that don't even let you take off in certain areas some of those areas are cities.

        • Ah, that's a bit of a pain. I'll do more research before committing. Thanks!

      • +1

I live at Wolli Creek. I used to just start my drone and fly few cm inside the home to drain my battery but now can't do it anymore. I have mavic 2 pro.

        • If you have the fly more you should be able to use the charger in Power bank mode to drain then to storage level.

    • "to be honest with all the new drone restrictions now built into DJI drones"

Built in? What does this mean?

  • +1

Just received an email from i-tech.com.au which has this for $789 with free delivery if you use the code "050522". Expires midday 6/5/22.

    • It'll drop even more in the coming week or two with Mini 3 announcement days away.

  • +2

Jump on this? Or wait until the Mini 3 drops and get the dregs of the Mini 2?

    • Skip this, lower prices coming.

  • +1

I'm really hoping the Mini 3 will support HDR. It's a killer capability for those who ever used a Drone to take aerial photography in the shadows or in Sunrise/Sunset situations. Have to wait for the May 10 official release announcements to see if it does have it or not.

    • I am just wondering if you can take 2 or 3 photos in manual exposure mode and then use them for HDR in post ?
Not as convenient but still a good workaround.

      • Bracket mode exists to do this.. but it's a pain since there's a slight gap between the shots that may be affected by crosswinds or the ability of the drone to keep itself in place. Furthermore, it's a lot of post-processing that needs to happen to stitch the images together with different levels of contrast and most the time, the images come out blurred as a result.
Better to have the one-shot capability inbuilt automatically so that you won't be disappointed in the pics that come out. The latest Mavics/Airs all have this feature, but all are more than 250g..

        • Most likely they are blurred not due to contrast variations but not proper alignment of images in HDR software.
It is quite simple task providing there was no focal length change and no refocusing.
Software should be able to do it automatically.
Although I've never tried doing HDR using drone images.

          • @Foma2: But even on normal cameras using bracket mode, you need to have it very still (ie. on tripod) or else the image won't come out. Mind you, it's been quite a few years since I've used it with my SLR (these days HDR is inbuilt into my phone. lol). Maybe the tech / software is better now, but the ones I tried on my Spark are very blurry with the amount of crosswinds that happens.

  • So where can we fly drones? National Parks require permission, which I assume takes weeks to process. If cities are out, what does that leave? Remote farms?

    • +1

      https://app.airmap.com

There's a bunch of these maps along with mobile apps that will tell you where you can and can't fly.

Please note that despite areas that are shaded - not all of these are "no fly" zones - but have certain restrictions in place around how high you can take it etc. Most Suburban areas are ok as long as you are not within the distance of airports, heliports or the CBD type places.

Out in the bush there's still lots of places that you can fly. Yes, National Parks do require permissions but most people will fly outside of these areas realistically.

      • +1

What's the best way to use that map? There doesn't seem to be a key or legend saying what the different colours mean?

Suburban areas are legal even though you're almost certainly flying over people in most suburbs?

        • +2

Circle and shaded areas means restricted flying. Click on the spot you are in and it will tell you what the restrictions mean. If there's anything RED within the list of restrictions, then you can't fly (eg. too close to airport or helipad). Yellow should be ok as long as you're not above 30m or so. You also need to apply the basic rules as well for Drones (eg. Don't fly it near groups of people, don't fly at night, ensuring you have direct line of sight etc).

          • @bchliu: Anyone here ever had police issues or anything? Does pulling out this app or showing a license help?

            • +2

@hamwhisperer: Yes it helps. Because you are demonstrating that you have exercised due diligence. As long as you don't break the other rules of interfering with people or private/public property, risk of causing harm, flying too high, flying at night, flying too close to airports, breaching other people's property/privacy etc.

If you get questioned about legally flying in these areas, then show the app to them. Even with cops, they will recognise the app and usually defuse the situation from there.

Here's some of the rules to remember. Pair it with the app and you'll be fine.

              https://www.casa.gov.au/drones/drone-rules/drone-safety-rule…

  • Did they stop distinguishing between >250g and <250g drones in terms of restrictions ?

    • I'd like to know too but I'm going to guess it's negative

    • No, less than 250g still doesn't require registration and can be flown within 5.5km of a controlled airport. So still somewhat different.

Officeworks price match with i-tech.com.au $749.55

  • The DJI Mini 3 is being announced in 5 days and I expect to see this product in a fly more combo dropping to the $699 mark. That's my guess.

    • I've only seen the "Pro" Mini 3 specs.. Not sure if there is a "Standard" Mini 3. The Pro specs is almost like cramming an DJI Air 2 into the chassis of a Mini - so expect it to hit over $1200 at launch for the Flymore pack.

      • Yeah I saw that. Hoping it's still going to drop the old one sightly.

      • I also heard they may not do a Fly more for Mini 3. Buying everything separately will push it up even more.

        • We'll know within the next 24 hours or so. Lol. Watch this space.

          • +1

@bchliu: Yeah crossing fingers for you all. I couldn't wait any longer and bought a few weeks ago.

Has been pretty good thus far, though scared the crap out of myself on the weekend when the Mini 2 hit high winds and landed the other side of a hill with no reception… got it back without it, but definitely recommend the Fly Away insurance for less anxiety in your life.

            • @Abaddon: In situations where you lost signal or out of sight: When the battery is low or if it is too out of range after a threshold, they come "home" to where it first took off (Assuming it got enough GPS Signals during lift off). Always good practice to let it detect the GPS spot when you first start it up with about 6 satellite locks before you fly it out. It does come home unless there's a fault with it.

              • +1

@bchliu: That should be the case (and has generally worked for me) but this one was more around high winds, hence trying to land before losing connection. There was a lot of bush between me and the drone, so didn't want to lose it in that due to wind or battery.

Told it to land itself (from the return to home menu) and landed it blind. Then a very stressful drive to the drone. Thankfully nobody pinched it.

Think I just need more practice with it. Should have tried the land immediately option when it first complained about the winds, rather than let it try for return to home, losing connection and freaking out.

                • @Abaddon: Just how windy was it and do you have some kind of wind detection weather app now?

                  • @hamwhisperer: That's a problem with the lighter drones - my Spark has a limit of around 50km/h crosswinds before it's too dangerous and risky to fly. It holds quite well under these conditions, but winds are linear - there's eddies of vacuums in the air that will knock a drone out if you aren't lucky especially if you are flying only around 10m above or so. Nothing is ever fool proof I suppose - but they do come about as good as they can to make it easier and less risky to fly.

            • @Abaddon: What happened? You entered landing mode and the wind pushed it? Or does it do that on it's own if it detects wind?

  • Use WELCOME10 code for an additional $10 off this price. (worked for me yesterday to bring to $809 with free delivery)

  • Does this drone come fitted with a camera?

    • Yes 4K/30 gimballed camera.

  • This deal is still live.

I just got it for 778 (free delivery) with office works 5% price beat.

The price of the 2 hasn't dropped since the 3 release (admittedly that's very recent) but I really want it for an upcoming trip and that price is pretty sweet for the flymore combo :)

    • +1

I'm still holding for $699 AUD.

Plus my 10% discount on HIM / HOME cards, should work out nice.

    • +1

Not sure we'll see a big drop given the price increase for the Mini 3.

I'm half kicking myself for not waiting. But at least I've had it up twice since I got it on two trips.

      • Yeah I couldn't wait any longer for a further price drop! It might not really come as the 3 is in a whole different price range i.e. the 2 and 3 are not really competing in that respect.

      • At this stage you're the smart one, the Mini 3 is announced, the Mini 3 is shipping, still no significant Mini 2 price drops.
