Medical Entry Preparation and Guidance

Hi all,

My son is looking for 2023 UCAT and aiming for Med entry. What I heard as requirement is minimum ATAR is 99.95%+, 95%+ in UCAT and after all of that interview selection.

Would like to hear your guidance on what is the best way to achieve it. He has been good scholar (not the top but in top 10) of selective entry school in Victoria. I am told to get Medview education tution for him that cost $11,000 just to help with UCAT and interview prep. Seems like looting to me though there are other competitors cheaper to this as well.

Please share if you know what is the best way forward from your experience. Thanks.

Sounds like a rort… making a test above and beyond year 12 results, and then creating a whole industry around making you pass said test. What the actual…

Definitely a rort. And the whole process seems out of touch for what is actually needed to get more people medically trained.
More focus should be on the human interaction skills, situational analysis skills, comprehension skills, etc., particularly for those looking to get into general practice.

Hope that is what he really wants to do…

His ambition, no pressure from parents but trying to support in whatever he want to do

      • What's his rational or motivation to pursuit the medical degree?

        • +2

          He doesn't know any doctors.

        • He been to an asian country with on a visit, an old lady dies in front of hospital as no one was bothered to look after poor lady. Sounds like a movie story though its a reality. He couldnt sleep for a long time after that. He want to start something that can help and he want to be a Dr as first step.

Minimum ATAR for medicine is definitely NOT 99.95%. You can get in with 95 ATAR if you do well in the UCAT and interview.

You will find much more information in the medstudentsonline forums:

Look into going to other states to study medicine, or even overseas. I know of a few people who went to NZ, QLD, and even one who went to Italy, to study medicine as the my couldn’t get into it here

The thing is they wont be able to practice as a doctor here as some registration don't carry over

  • The atar requirement and UCAT vary greatly amongst uni and there are some pathway that may make it slightly easy if for example, you're low SES or Rural

    • Thanks. Will look into this
