Jetstar: Changed My Direct Flight Route to via-MEL That I Dont Want

Jetstar: I had booked a 'starter fare' direct flight. But ,Jetstar ,on its own, changed it to be Via Melbourne thereby doubling up my time. I cant even cancel the flight / rebook as its a starter fare. What are my options?

they didn't even inform me that the flight route has changed..

Well clearly you've been informed if you are aware of it.

Call them, how hard is it?

    • no, i happened to 'manage booking'

Good. So what's the issue then?

Just head to the website, find the flight option that's available and that you want, then contact them to request that option, citing the fact that there's an "involuntary change" to your reservation. You should be able to also get a full refund because of this - but most of the time these changes can't be processed online

    Ahhh Jetstar…

You really do get what you pay for..

        Had worse on QANTAS.
Booked flight to direct flight Adelaide to Alice, connecting on to Uluru and then back to Alice.
QANTAS cancelled the return flight outright, planning to leave us at Uluru indefintely apparently.
Redirected the "To" Flight via Sydney, then cancelled the flight from Sydney to Uluru but kept the Adelaide to Sydney Leg and didn't tell us. (I guess marginally more convenient that being stranded in Uluru)
I found out about the flight to Sydney 7 days prior to the flight departure by sheer coincidence that I logged in to check the original booking code!

They also had the gall to then "refund" me to a Time restricted "Travel Bank" (ie essentially gift cards).

Took me 10 hours on hold and a further 90 minutes explaining the bloody obvious to QANTAS staff across 3 calls and 9 months from my first call to get my cash back.
QANTAS also refused to honor my claim to cancellation costs on car hire and accommodation as a result of their ineptitude.

I've found Qantas just as disgraceful as any other airline. Buying Australian or customer loyalty means absolutely nothing.

        • What cancellation cost on hire cars? Usually you pay when you pick up?

          • @serpserpserp: Locking in a cheaper price by prepaying part or all? Or sometimes they have first day charged if cancelled within x days of booking.

      • Ironically, no they aren't getting what they paid for.

Just go to online chat and ask for a different flight or a refund. Should only take a few minutes to sort it out.

If you had booked on Qantas on the other hand, you'd be on hold for hours.

    • true. have been with qantas 'hold' for a few times now

ozbargain demand food on the flights and get free meals

I thought it's standard that if a flight changes, a refund or change is an option if it's not suitable. Before covid, my dad would buy tickets a year in advance, so he always has the "free date change" option for the cheapest price

    • Fare difference still applied, isnt it!

You get two planes for the price of one, what's the problem.

    • More is better right?

I had a Darwin to Cairns direct flight redirected to go via Melbourne - how ridiculous is that! I managed to change the date.

    • +2

I can top that. Sydney to Melbourne became Sydney to Melbourne via Brisbane (on Virgin; two Business Class flights for the price of one) …

      • +5

I don't think that yours tops mine. Darwin to Cairns via Melbourne!!!

        • Except Sydney to Melbourne is shorter than Darwin to Cairns but yeah that is a hike. Hopefully you didn’t have anything important that you missed out on? I missed out on my Melbourne International Comedy Festival shows because the morning direct flight became an afternoon flight and delays meant I didn’t get to my hotel in Melbourne until 11. Did get extra status credits though

@kerfuffle: Mine was OK. I just moved the flight and extended my trip by a day.

What about Gold Coast to Brisbane via Sydney , I’ve seen this come through a few times on a pax booking

i flew from sydney->melbourne->adelaide->bne once due to storms, i asked for free meals, and my boss paid me the saturday it took to get home, happy as a pig in mud

Can't think of anything worse than taking 3 flights to get home.

Double time and a half to sit on my ass any day, free piss and food

        • Yeah, almost like being a public servant.

          • @jrvb42: Public servants don’t even have milk in the fridge for coffee, and imagine the wages less than private sector

  • My flight did the opposite. It cancelled the Melbourne stop over and went direct to another city. I was really looking forward to trying some food in Melbourne for lunch during the stop over.

Appreciate it, OP, they transferred my stop over to you haha

  • they didn't even inform me that the flight route has changed..

It's probably buried in your emails, and usually they might only give you 24 hours to accept or select an alternative.

  • From where to where?

    • +1

My guess is YPPH to YBBN

you learn something new everyday. never knew there were alternate codes to "PER" and "BNE"

Who tf uses icao codes when talking commercial flights

        • Four letter codes are ICAO codes used by airline operations, ATC etc. Three letter IATA codes generally only used by travel agents, and when booking flights etc.

          • -1

@Flying Ace: Whoever drops icao codes in general lingo is odd or just playing. A flight simulator, as they are shit to remember.

This is how I remember the differences

Baggage systems, reservations, boarding passes = iata, which is also the system that gives 2 letter code for airlines, which painfully get recycled.

Operations/tower = icao but as an a financial worker in 4 airports they were never used.

From memory Airport must have an icao code put doesn’t need an iata code if not commercial. Airports in central Queensland for mining only etc.

Weird shit like weather stations, oil rigs. Train stations can have icao codes so not for airports but locations
