Need to install reverse sensors on car

Hi guys, I was thinking of installing reverse sensors on my car. I'm too used to relying on sensors, so driving a car that doesn't have sensors is freaking me out.

I plan to get this off eBay. Is it advisable?

Also, does anyone know of any places in Melbourne that I can get these installed? Or what prices should I be looking at for installation? I'm bad at mechanics so I'm not going to attempt a DIY(: Thanks!

  • Hey Mate,

I got these installed for free when I bought my car. Dealer said it cost them $250!! No they were not gold plated :P

Id assume these would take 30-60 mins to install… Going by what an average mechanic charges, you are looking at $40 - $100. These are not that hard to install if you know how to take the bumpers off.

  • Any car hifi store will sell them - and might be where you should consider buying, as they will fit too.

  • Bright Light Auto Parts down at Ferntree Gully quoted $60/hr x 2hrs to install. Hmm.. Should I be looking at workshops or stores like Autobarn that sells the equipment for installation?

  • Autobarn will supply and install for $350 front or $300 back. this is a fairly good price for the kit installed, typically you pay extra for colour-matching.
most basic systems have a beeper to signal a close object, while better ones have a digital display option with bars that light up, and then there are some with a digital distance display for each direction, which is probably the most useful for parking in tight spaces but without any irritating noises — (I got a quote from advancedinstalls.com.au of $750 for an 8-sensor system colour-matched supplied and installed).

many car dealers will charge 2 or 3 times that price for exactly the same quality of after-market parking sensor kits (eg my Honda dealer offered me a special price when I bought a new car from them "$660 instead of the usual $990", but I turned it down when I realised how much they were asking for just 4 rear sensors).

you can also find reverse camera + LCD display mirror which is great value for ~$350-450 installed.
or, if you want state-of-the-art tech and you're prepared to DIY install it, check out this panoramic camera system, similar to what is in some of the latest european luxury cars: rearviewsystem.net — (I was quoted A$672 shipped to Melbourne for a set of these).

as suggested, if you look on ebay/dealextreme/etc, you can get a full setup for a fraction these prices, but you probably have no option but fitting them yourself.
