Currently using Huawei P30 Pro - Next Phone?

If Google services were on P40/P50 - I'd jump on them in a heartbeat as never had a better phone than the P30 Pro.

But I don't know where to go next - our current phones are great, but not quite cutting the mustard anymore - battery is ageing, storage is filling (256gb internal for Mrs is full), and camera is now a good few years old - there must be better tech and given the use it gets, happy to upgrade.

So where to now given Huawei is dead to us with no Google services. We need:

  • 256gb/512gb internal memory. Don't care for SD cards, more trouble than good in a phone.
  • great cameras
  • android
  • fast charge and good battery life
  • budget of circa $1000-1500.

Don't care for gaming at all, so don't mind if its a last gen flagship as long as camera is killer.

Samsung seems the easy option, but I reckon there must be better?

    hmmmmm

I've done it before, and photos have been jumbled up in a mess on Mrs phone when using a sd card. Not worth the hassle based on my experience.

      • Fair.

What other brands are you looking at? If you're willing to jump ship to Apple, the latest or even a gen or 2 old iPhone will suit most of your needs. If you're sticking with Android, wait around for the next Pixel? Or go for the current flagship Samsung if you want. There aren't really any terrible options, maybe the Pixel 6/Pro given the amount of problems people had with them, but you're safe with the majority of flagships from the big 3 (Google, Samsung, Apple).

download the 256g of photos and get a new battery in that phone.

    Pixel 6 pro

  • What for the next pixel.

  • Currently using a Samsung S22, and I was using the Samsung S10E prior to that but similar to your problems, I needed to get a new one as the battery life was no longer lasting a day. They are good phones but you need to debloat them with ADB as Samsung ship them with all manner of bloatware, I can't imagine using a Samsung phone without doing this, not sure what they are thinking but the hardware and design is nice.

    • How's s22 battery life?

      • +1

Pretty average battery life. 85 hours in GSMarena's endurance rating isn't great (link). S21 had 4000 mAh and Samsung reduced it to 3700 in the S22.

        • Yeh can't understand why they keep putting smaller batteries in their flagship when a series has 5000mAh

          • @silenthillrocks: Well the S22 is now more like a semi flagship. Gotta pay extra for the S22 Ultra's 108 hour rating.

            • @Mr Haj: I would but it's too expensive lol. Battery is an essential feature, should be big enough on all devices.

It's fine if you aren't a heavy user - I don't game on mobile, just text, email, and using it for music and heart rate tracking for an hour at the gym each day. If you are a heavy user, I don't think it would cut the mustard.

  • Samsung or Oppo

  • P30 Pro is still hard to beat for cameras. S22 Ultra looks good, but I find Samsung's colours a bit over the top.

Not really many flagship options outside the big 3 (Apple/Google/Samsung) these days. Oppo ruins photos with too much sharpening and their software lacks polish, oneplus is now just rebranded oppo, Xiaomi means grey imports…

Vivo has some good camera phones but we only get the X60 Pro here which isn't all that great.

  • I thought p40 had 5g (but not p50?)
I can see a few youtube videos on how to install google play and any android app on p40/p50
