Cloud Computing Courses

I just moved to Australia and looking for work. My background is in IT/Helpdesk support. I saw many jobs for Cloud Computing engineers so I thought that it would be a good area to get into.

Does anyone have any advice on courses that would be good and not too expensive?

I had a long conversation with someone from LearningPeople this morning. Their courses seemed good but expensive and not sure if I can justify spending too much right now.

I am familiar with Coursera and maybe doing something there might be better.

    Learning People reviews:-

Dodgy business starting with the salesmen on the team that sell you on complete lies don't trust a word they promise you or promote. Location not even in australia they don't even have people that work here to talk to. Content is so bad I had to use free third party website cause it was better, I will give it minus stars if l could.

Waste of time, these guys are scams. They talk about how great their course is, but in reality its not true. They talk it up as all good and perfect. But its really to good to be true.

This company will lie to you until you sign up. Hide certain details about the courses and pretend there are ‘discounts’ that are about to end to pressure you to join quickly. In particular salesman Neil Johnson who is one of the fake 5 star rating reviews below. Terrible experience with this company. Do yourself a favour and go somewhere else.

The courses are completely outdated, do not waste your time. Threatened with debt collectors when stopped using their courses. 1 year later they still call me and try and get money out of me. Their idea of teaching is showing you an 10 minute video of a topic and then go forth my son you are now an expert. The entire SQL course was a 10 minute video, without any supplementary reading material / direction. They still use django 1.1 despite it being extremely out of date. I generally don't like reviewing companies, but these guys take the cake on being so completely crooked, I just don't want anyone to fall for them. The Learning People - I hope you implode

Sales consultants have a great pitch and are friendly on the surface. I am absolutely horrified on a response I got while considering the sales pitch because I did not respond on time. I understand that commission on sales is important to you but you do need to relax and consider your approach. I was interested in what was on offer, now I wouldn’t recommend this training to anyone. Julia Geare

The quality of their course is really really really bad. You have to pay for the whole course, even if you don’t want to continue you still have to pay!! And they don’t leave you alone ! Don’t waste your money!!

For lack of better words, these guys are mad SUS. They will pressure you to buy their course ON FIRST PHONECALL and all i wanted to know was the price. Their marketing guy comes from a long line of greasy used car dealers, (BUY THE COURSE, BUY IT NOW!! IT'S A GOOD DEAL I PROMISE!!!) private scam company, don't fall for it! Absolute scum of the earth.

Poor service they just let you watch the videos without any direction. Also slow response time

Aggressive sales & marketing. Trying their best to push into their course bundle by infringing insecurity into our mind. I realized it is a fraud company from their marketing strategy itself not sure if it was that sales person's issue. Definitely not recommended for any learning or career advice help

Like many of these online places, they'll have a sales team to sell you on it then the actual product is rubbish.

Worth considering some form of accredited course, maybe via TAFE? Think about it from an employers perspective, why would they be interested in people that do a simple online course anyone can do?

    • I did a TAFE SWSI course online, and it seemed quite dodgy. They lost all our assignments work, so we had to re-submit it. Then when the 2nd part, we had someone with a 'thick, foreign accent' as the teacher, and it was difficult to follow. Furthermore, the course cost the government $20,000 which I ended up getting written off, when I made a complaint, after quitting. I later received a diploma, and had a distinction for Part 1 (the rest were failures).

Just get some courses on Udemy, check them out beforehand and find them when they are on special, $11 to $14 is what I spend on something that are quite interesting.

Where you learn does not really matter, spend the money to actually get the certification on AWS / Azure / GCP. People may know things but proving it is harder in an interview. Having the certification is an easy way to prove it without companies asking questions. I believe the cost will pay for itself when you get an job.

I know that there are people that do not have certifications and that will run circles around people that do, I would rather hire somebody that knows vs has the certification. But if I have 2 identical CVs in front of me and there is no easy way to figure out who has more experience a certification may make the difference.

Saying that… I should get my certifications too :).

Regarding some courses, for AWS these were good: https://acloudguru.com/ I got some of their courses on Udemy but they are old now. They were keeping them up to date but I think the entire platform moved to their own website. The cloud is changing a lot so my courses from 2 years ago are probably no longer good. If I were you I would pay for a few months on their platform: https://acloudguru.com/pricing you can learn a lot in 2 months, probably enough to land a decent job.

A cloud guru just got acquired FYI, and from experience their course content went downhill rapidly. I got my first AWS cert through them but the rest i got from linux academy (Which ACG acquired and promptly ruined).

OP, if you want AWS you cannot go past Adrian Cantril @ https://learn.cantrill.io/
His courses are amazing, but only relevant to AWS.

Agree with what you said about certifications.

For AWS, I would highly recommend Stephane Maarek's courses on Udemy starting with the Solutions Architect Associate. I did the ACloudGuru one years ago, and Stephane's one when I had to recertify. ACloudGuru will help you pass the exam, but Stephane's one will actually teach you properly and better prepare you for the exam.

CompTIA Cloud+ is very general and I think well respected in the market. Buy book, study and do the exam.
Do the free two day Microsoft Azure fundamentals training day. You get an exam voucher to do the Azure Fundamentals exam for free. You need to study the book as well but that's free to download.

    • Thanks for that. I have registered.
