Any options for existing Amex customer looking for upgrade with sign on bonus?

Hi All

I am an existing Amex customer for over 5 years with perfect payment records ie never late or defaulted. I have their Platinum Edge card. Looking to upgrade to Platinum Card which has annual fees of $1450 and up to 200,000 Bonus Membership Rewards Points for New Card users.
What I am seeking if anyone is aware of similar promotions for existing customers? All their promotions seem to be for New Card members only.
Alternatively keen to hear what are the options to accumulate promotional Singapore's Krisflyer points.

Cheers

You will get zero from Amex if you are already a customer. 18 month minimum between leaving and re-signing on. They won’t even budge that minimum by a day.

Amex isn’t exclusive in this, almost every bank or lender offers better deals to new customers. They don’t give a shit about old ones, and why would they? They’ve already got what they wanted out of you.

    • Thanks. I am a rookie in accumulating point/rewards and reached out to a broader audience here at Ozbargain who are much more knowledgable. :-)

I churn an Amex every 2 years or so.

The only other way I’ve managed to get Amex to give me anything is by calling to cancel and sometimes they will offer points to keep it an extra year.

        • Hats off….It's cumbersome……But understanding soon that churn is the name of the game unless a high roller :-)

Look for the upgrade promotions - sometimes you'll have an offer to upgrade and get some points in the process.

  • Yeah recently did get 10,000 bonus points and wasn't even aware how. No complaints.

  • I get invitations via email or through my AMEX account every few months to upgrade my Qantas Discovery to a Qantas Ultimate, and each invitation will award me with 40,000 - 60,000 Qantas points if I spend $3,000 on eligible purchases within three months of upgrading.

However, the upgrade invitations are nowhere near as good as the 100,000 - 130,000 Qantas points sometimes available through new customer sign-up offers

Same here, but for the Elevate card to Velocity Platinum

  • That's generous of them as 40k-60k better than 0.
I hear or get nothing from them of that sort. Thought with a decent credit score and banking history with them would qualify for something with them but nothing to date. :-(

just enter the cycle - Amex, then bank credit card #1, then bank credit card #2 spread over 18 months. Rinse and repeat.

Plus keep a spreadsheet for dates and other details.

  • There is a forum on Australian Frequent Flyer about people's experience with AMEX retention offers etc - I would read that to see what the general consensus is and what others have been given.

I personally would just bite the bullet and cancel - especially since you are wanting the Platinum. I have it and it's an awesome card. The new customer sign up offers are massive (you should be able to get 300k with a referral) and help justify the fee…..It is a LONG 18 months though.

  • 100% 18 months is a killer and was looking to plan for a travel at the end of this year. Thanks for sharing the forum.

Got a partner who could apply instead?

  • Depends on which card you are currently on. I was on amex essential for about a year when I received upgrade offer to either plat edge or explorer. However, upgrade offer will give you less points for meeting minimum spending requirement.

    • only other way is to close your account, wait 18 months then apply again.
