RTX 3080 Upgrade GPU Buying Advice

I'm finally upgrading from my GTX 1650S.
I'm looking to game at 1440p resolution and hoping to not have to upgrade for at least 5 years.
DLSS is looking really nice, don't care that much for ray tracing however it is a nice benefit.
I don't care for crypto mining and never will.

My choices are;

  • Wait some more for price drop (im looking to buy this year though)
  • Wait for the next series, don't get an RTX 3080
  • RTX 3080 10GB
  • RTX 3080 12GB

I'd be willing to spend a hundred or so more dollars for a decent card (like an evga) vs a lower brand (warranty seems nice) but I'm not ruling out lower tier cards.

Any advice much appreciated

EDIT: I bought the 3080 12gb today :)

  • If you need one now, get one now. If you can wait, wait for 4000 series whether getting 3080 or 4080. It's simple.

    • Yeah, I really want a new card but I want to wait till the 4000 series. I just hope NVIDIA don't delay release till next year.

If you have a game/s that you can enjoy now with your new graphics card then buy it now, enjoy and don’t look back. You can’t buy back time you could have used to enjoy life more.

New cards don’t immediately make previous gen obsolete, you should understand with your 1650S. :)

    • Very true, I'll probably seize the day today

  • Get the 3080. I got a 3070 over a year ago and happy with that. I'm sure it will serve me well for a while yet

  • The 4080 will probably be difficult to get your hands on at release, which means the prices will be nowhere near RRP. But it would of course be nice to get the latest gen card.

  • Intel is releasing their GPU's in 2 months, so it might be worth waiting to see what happens to Nvidia pricing when there's a third competitor around.

But if you don't want to wait, the RTX 3070 regularly sells for $899 ($400 cheaper than the RTX 3080).

It is ~20 to 25% slower on average than 3080 10GB, for a 30% reduction in cost. Still powerful enough for 1440p gaming, and will be for at least a few years. The longevity can be prolonged so long as the games you play all support DLSS.

gpu's are very easy to upgrade and resell. you could get a 30x0 now and switch to a 40x0 if you feel the need.

  • that is good buy.. mark my word… next month u will thank you.. price will be going up soon

  • Nice to see you bit the bullet. I'm in a similar situation and will buy sooner rather than later, but I'm still having fun with my 1070Ti so I'm not in much of a rush. But I want to buy within the month I think.

Which deal did you end up taking for the 3080 12GB? I've been hoping to grab that exactly, as long as it's not one of the poorly cooled ones.

    • Also curious where you picked up your 3080 12GB. I've been playing He'll Let Loose lately, and thinking this would do well in 1440p..

I'm tempted to wait for the 4000 series, but I can't imagine it'll be within budget for another year (or more) anyway - seems a long time to wait.

    • PNY 12gb model available for $1399
