Stick Vac and/or Robot Vac and/or Barrel Vac

Hi guys,

My old trusty Nilfisk barrel vacuum has died on me after 15 years of service, and now I'm in the market for new vacuum cleaner(s).

Current situation: I just have a Kmart cheapie stick vacuum.

Dilemma: trying to decide what combination of stick / robot / barrel vacuum will be the ideal solution.

I'm in a double storey 4 bedroom duplex, with hardwood bamboo flooring throughout.

  • I will buy a new stick vacuum: will a good stick vacuum on its own do the job? Something like a Dyson V8 Absolute or V10 Absolute.
  • If stick vacuum will not be enough, should I opt for a robot or barrel vacuum as the 2nd vac?
  • If Robot, should I go with vac + mopping functionality or just vac?

Expected spend:
- Stick: kinda depends on whether its the only vac I'm buying. If I'm buying another vac in addition to this, then around $600-650. If it's the only vacuum then maybe around $800ish (which is what a V10 Absolute will cost right now).
- Robot: $600-700
- Barrel: should be able to find something decent for around $300 or so I think.

I'm expecting different views from people on this so keen to hear different thoughts and views.

EDIT: No pets at home, but have a toddler. For a robot vac, I would expect to clear up the floor. Also don't want to buy 2 robot vacs. I also expect to bin the Kmart cheapie as its rubbish in my opinion.

Thanks!

  • Two robots with vac and mopping, one robot for each storey. Keep the Kmart stick vac for emergencies. This is assuming that the house is tidy and the floor isn't littered with toys, cables and clothes.
