What's Worth Watching on Apple TV?

I want to make the most of my 7 day free trial with Apple TV. What are some shows you've enjoyed and would recommend? I am open to all genres.

I am joining to watch Slow Horses. I've also got Ted Lasso and Pachinko on the list.

I heard good things about 'Severance' if you're into psychological thiller

    • Severance is good, slow burn but worth it.

  • See is cool

  • +2

    Mythic Quest is quite good.

    • You shouldn't be fooled by the early season episodes, later on it gets into the characters in a much more funny and personal way.

Ted lasso is a slow burner then turns to trash

    • +7

Ted Lasso is great. Sure, the second season is less about the football and more about the people but don't agree with your comment that it turns to trash.

      Thanks Nate

  • Dickinson is just this side of too weird. Season 1 is great, slightly less brilliant as it progresses into the other seasons but still worth watching

Flight Attendant, Slow Horses, Hacks, Our Flag Means Death

That should fill in the 7 days

Pretty sure Flight Attendant, Hacks, and Our Flag Means Death aren't part of the Apple TV+ subscription, they are either rent/buy or on other services..

      • huh!

well, they are worth watching but not on apple TV+

  • +1

Ted Lasso Season 1 is freaking gold. The second season was atrociously bad - lost all of the charm and wit from the first season, somehow.

    • +2

I think 'atrociously bad' is a bit of a stretch - as dogboy says above it's got a slightly different focus that might not work as well for everyone, but I personally still enjoyed it

      • +2

        I thrive on being dramatic

  • See, Mythic Quest, Severance, For All Mankind, Slow Horses is very good, Servant (if you like M Knight Shamalon and mystery/suspense), Morning Show (if you like drama). Defending Jacob is a little pedestrian but still worth watching imo. I liked Physical a lot but reviews for that weren't as strong, it's a little dark and the main character unlikable. Central Park if you liked Bob's Burgers. Tehran is good but I didn't watch all of it yet. As for movies, CODA won best picture Oscar so you gotta watch that. Finch was okay but it's a bit of a family friendly scifi movie, I prefer to see people's skulls crushed in in my post apocalyptic scifi, personally.

I did watch all of Ted Lasso, but that's got a family friendly vibe too it too.

For All Mankind - has some slower episodes but definitely builds as it goes

    • +1

I hate having to wait a year for each season.

      • Me too but that's not unusual with other shows, particularly with COVID delays

  • +2

Sererance - it starts off slow, but that season finale is up there with some of the best tv i have watch
For All Mankind - excellent sci-fi show about the race to the moon, bring on season 3
Ted Lasso - first season, not so much in the second season

  • Umm all these shows are available on a particular streaming website. It's as easy as 1.. 2.. 3…

    • Is this streaming website you speak of legal and supporting the arts and entertainment industry?

      • The industry is getting greedy. The golden years of Netflix will be over soon and people are going to turn to the old ways.

        • VHS tapes? ;)

    Foundation

  • +2

Top Tier: Severance, Morning Show, Foundation, Ted Lasso (both seasons) all brilliant IMO. I'd say start with one of those depending on your favourite genre.

Second Tier: The Afterparty and Mythic Quest aren't in the same league but addictive and great fun. The Shrink Next Door was good, but a bit of a downer. I enjoyed Physical too, my wife loved it.

Avoid: I found the first half of the first episode of Dickinson unbearable.

  • Pachinko.

Its a story of a Korean family emigrating to Japan and surviving during a 79-year span (1910-1989).

Both this and the book its based on are absolutley worth the emotional investment.

  • I have a 1 year trial, and have not found anything decent, unless they charge me extra.

  • Tehran, really enjoyed season one. Will probably rejoin for S2.

Also, the Morning Show; Billy Crudup is fantastic.

  • Ted Lasso

  • Severance, defending jacob, ted lasso and servant are the ones i loved on apple tv

  • +2
    1. Morning Wars. This was really fun, with a great script, great actors, interesting themes. A drama for adults about serious issues.

    2. Severance. Intriguing and mysterious speculative fiction, again with great actors. Keeps you guessing until the end.

    3. Slow horses. A lot of laugh-out-loud moments, especially from the incredible acting of Gary Oldman, who plays a cranky and sarcastic old spy.

    4. The After Party. Comedy detective series. This is absolutely hilarious. Just watch it.

    5. Invasion. Alien invasion of planet Earth. Despite the mediocre reviews, I really enjoyed this. Great special effects, and an interesting diversity in the cast instead of the usual Hollywood story of Aliens only invading (and being defeated by) the US.

    6. Suspicion. Spy thriller. Not as good as some of the other series I've mentioned, but some funny moments and held my attention to the end.

    7. Foundation. Only for die-hard SF fans. I've only watched 15 minutes of this, but I'm sure it won't be as bad as some of the reviews say.

That's about it for me. I didn't enjoy Defending Jacob. And The Shrink Next Door is just weird. Ted Lasso is quirky and occasionally funny, but the attempt to portray its characters as perfect ideals of kindness and generosity becomes a bit much. The first episode of Home is amazing, then it becomes less interesting. Trying had a few funny moments but it wasn't good enough for me to recommend it.

As for movies, Finch is OK (end-of-the-world SF), Coda is horrendous (I don't know how it won the Academy Award other than because of its focus on the deaf community, because the story is an uninteresting clichรฉd remake of the River Phoenix movie Running on Empty). The Elephant Queen is an OK animal documentary. Wolfwalkers has interesting Celtic-inspired animation if you're into that. The beauty of the illustrations is not quite as good as The Secret of Kells, but it's a better movie, although aimed more at kids than adults.

I initially wasn't impressed with Apple TV+, but it has surprised me with some really quality shows.

  • Severance was a great psychological scifi mix up,

Foundation was good, if you liked Dune or Star Wars you'll surly love it,

Pachinko is an historical drama with engaging characters, mixing Korean and Japanese stories , if you like a decent Kdrama there's a high chance you'll love this.

  • Thanks everyone. Your suggestions helped. I was watching via the website and trying to find an extensive list of what's on offer is difficult.

    I ended up watching:
Slow Horses - a great adaptation but the books are better - as they generally are. ๐Ÿ™‚
Ted Lasso - I found it charming.
Severance - well worth watching but you need to pay attention. It's not a show to have on in the background.
The Afterparty - a bit silly but fun.
Suspicion - just plain awful. Plot holes galore, dreadful acting from actors I've seen do exponentially better. A definite DO NOT RECOMMEND. ๐Ÿ‘Ž๐Ÿ‘Ž

I was leaving Pachinko until the end but I just couldn't take anymore screen time, so it remains on the to-see list.

  • Greyhound is a good movie
