Parts Review For Budget Gaming PC

Hi all,

Just looking for some feedback on the build. The goal is best performance on a fixed budget which is $1800 and I already have a case.

Will be replacing a AMD FX 8320 / GTX1060. The ram and storage size is based on the current 16GB ram which has been a limiter and the current OS and games installs are just over 1TB. Gaming resolution will be at 3440 x 1440.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 3.7 GHz 6-Core Processor ($329.00 @ BPC Technology)
CPU Cooler: EVGA CLC 360 74.82 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler ($119.00 @ BPC Technology)
Motherboard: Gigabyte A520 AORUS ELITE ATX AM4 Motherboard ($125.00 @ Amazon Australia)

Why neg to this comment? I would also consider budget PC be close to 1k.

2k is mid range PC to me.

    • Yeah just meant not top end poor choice of words

mwave has 5600x for $299 atm, i think historical cheapest is around $270 or so.
I would get a 3070 for the $900 range instead.
remove the aftermarket cooler as the one that comes with the 5600x is more than enough to cool it.
try to get a 80+ gold minimum 750w psu.

    • Yep fair call will consider a drop of cooler and spend money on 3070 and PSU instead

There was that deal recently with the 5600 (non-X) at $256.50, and apparently the performance difference is only a few percent

Swap the 5600 in place of the 5600xt, that seems to be the general consensus from the tech reviews of the 5600, save $44
Water cooling looks cool but for better gaming performance that money is best spent on your GPU, use the stock cooler, save $119
Now you can step the gpu up to any of the recent $899 rtx 3070 deals for no additional outlay

Excellent start, there are a few things we can optimise.

First, the Motherboard, the A520 series don't have PCIE 4 (only 3), which will hurt down the line if you want PCIE 4 GPU or SSD. For another $25 you can get the B550 version of this board

CPU cooler is probably not needed for anything under 5800X. In any case, if a month in you feel like you could get better temps, you can always add one later. For now, that money is better spend on the GPU.

With the PSU, I would definitely get something modular or semi-modular at this wattage. Otherwise half your case will be cables. Especially since it doesn't look like you are using anything with SATA or MOLEX power connectors, maybe something like this?

Last but not least. I know that the case make ZERO contribution to the performance, but maybe consider a new case around $100 mark. After I rebuilt my newish computer in the old case, it looked like some sort of abomination. I replaced the case a few months later. In any case, just like the cooler, you can always do this down the line.

    • Yep consensus seems to be drop cooler and go with cheaper 5600 option and put that money into PSU, GPU and will look at the Motherboard.

I am pretty happy with case as I have a Thermaltake core P5 for it all to go in which is also part of the reason I was looking at the cooler just to fill the case out nicely but not a priority.

Really appreciate the time to give some guidance ;-)
