BYD - Atto 3 Extra Information/FAQ

Since there isn't a lot of information about the Atto 3, I emailed them last night about charging specs, etc. They replied by the next day, on a Saturday, so customer service is prompt. Anyways, thought this would help incase anyone is looking for a bit more information about the car. Hope its useful!

Main notes:
- 7kW max AC charging rate
- ANCAP safety rating coming in May 2022
- Test drives June 2022
- 6 more models in 24 months.

  • I actually quite like the BYD Atto 3 (from what I've seen) and would shortlist it if I was looking to get into the EV market because of how cheap it is. China bad blah blah it's probably a fine car and won't have too many issues. Considering Toyota is going to be using their battery tech, that's a pretty solid endorsement imho

BYD have been in the battery business for some time, but their first foray into EV were buses iirc.\

      • There are BYD buses running in the inner west Sydney bus routes

I went to their showroom in Sydney a few weeks ago to have a look at the Atto 3 (and the smaller hatchback Dolphin) and was very impressed. It was only in left hand drive, but was still a good impression of what it’s going to be like.

The interior is a bit of a love/hate and tends to polarise people. I didn’t mind it but thought that the colour scheme could have been toned down a bit. The material the dash area is made from is weird, it looks soft and tactile, but upon touch, it’s just… different. Not hard plastic, but not the leather type feel you would think.

Seats were comfortable and at 6’2” tall, I had plenty of head room. Seats are made out of what I was told was “fake leather” but didn’t feel fake. Again, the colouring was not to my taste.

Interior space was quite ample. There was heaps of legroom in the back seat area and enough space in the boot area. Outside I would say that the vehicle is sort of about the size of the Outlander I drive, maybe a tiny bit smaller. I would say, bigger than a Kona, but smaller than a Santa Fe.

I liked the infotainment screen, but was told no android auto/apple car play at least for a few months. The whole landscape/portrait rotating seemed gimmicky. It was nice and clear, but, as you would expect, it just seemed a tad laggy with swiping and inputs.

What I didn’t like was the speedo display. It looked like a parts bin left over. There is this big, colourful centre screen and this tiny little drivers display with relatively little information and wasted realestate. I guess they just wanted the bare basics for this screen.

Fit and finish of the vehicle seemed quite good considering it is a cheap EV. I don’t know if this was paid extra attention to because it is a display model or if they are all built to this standard, but it seemed fine for the price point. Panels lined up, plastics were neat, paint was standard.

At the end of the visit, I thought it was about what I would have expected from a low cost EV. I had set the bar very low on expectations, but was pleasantly surprised.

    • How was the boot space?

      • +1

About small SUV sized, more like Kona sized rather than Outlander sized. The boot space felt more like a small hatchback size ranger than large SUV sized.

  • I've been keeping up to date with its release. Could be my first EV.

What happens with EV batteries after 10 years or so when they decrease in voltage over time? Will you be shelling out 10k for a new battery?

    • It's generally only the one cell on the pack that goes, single cells can be replaced. There are people that have some this with the Toyota hybrid packs for years. Not sure what sort of battery chemistry and cell layout these guys use.

      • The blade batteries look proprietary, so i dont know if you can just swap out 18650's like some other battery packs. Also the 'cells' are the full length of the battery pack, or at least they're very long unlike what we think of cells as individual batteries.
