Noob Question - Replace Motherboard/CPU

Basically my computer won’t turn on.

Think I’ve troubleshooted to work out the motherboard is stuffed.

  1. Power supply turns on by itself with the paper clip trick.

  2. Tested power button by connecting pins with a screwdriver and still nothing.

Am I right in assuming the mobo is fried?

If so, looking to replace it.

It’s just a basic desktop build from a few years ago. I don’t do any gaming.

AMD Ryzen 5 2400G
ASRock A320M-HDV

Not sure whether I should just try to find a replacement mobo? Or upgrade CPU while I’m at it..
would the 2400G be compatible with newer boards?

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks.

  • Power supply turns on by itself with the paper clip trick

Are you sure the 12V, 5V and 3.3V lines have correct output? One of my previously dead PSU had a failed 5V line.

Replacing PSU is worth a try, as it is cheaper than replacing mobo/CPU and you can reuse PSU with other built.

    • Actually before I knew about being able to test the PSU, I did buy a new one.

It also does not work plugged into the mobo, but does power on with the paper clip trick (same with new and old PSU).

I also tried replacing the mobo battery, but this did not work either

      • Have you tried booting without graphics card attached?

"Tested power button by connecting pins with a screwdriver " what actually happened? Board wouldn't power up? Or powers up but no video output?

Or upgrade CPU while I’m at it.. would the 2400G be compatible with newer boards?

Wiki tells me 2400G would be supported on the B450 but not B550.

If your CPU is bork, B450 would not be a best choice to pair with a newer Ryzen 5000 series cheap.

        • Don’t have a graphics card. Only integrated graphics as I don’t game in it.

Nothing happened at all when I tried to jump the mobo with screwdriver.

Think I’ll just bite the bullet and upgrade to new CPU and mobo.
          Looking at Ryzen 5600G with a GIGABYTE B550M Aorus Pro-P Micro-ATX.

My other components should be fine (hopefully).

          Thanks for your help!

I don't know whats available up in Cairns but if you have a PC store nearby they can offer troubleshooting services if you're looking to drop a medium amount of money for the replacement.

It seems like you've stepped through the troubleshoot process (i assume you're just trying to get it to post with mobo, cpu and 1 stick of ram) but there is only so much you can do without other parts that you know are working that you can swap in. Having things like a 2nd board to test the CPU in, or more ram etc is often the easiest way to work out what is actually broken. Id have a look and see whats available and what it would cost you for someone to diagnose, and what the deal would be if they cant figure it out.

Would be a shame to see you buy a board when its the CPU or vice vera

Thanks for the suggestions. Think I’m going to just upgrade them both, then I won’t have to worry!
My CPU and mobo were about 4 years old anyways.

  • My computer wouldn't boot a while back. It turned out to just be the bios battery needed switching out.

    • I did try that, but still nothing :(
