Good Quality CCTV Home Camera Set up

Searched the first few pages in this forum sub page, now to post.

Seeking recommendations for a good quality home camera CCTV set up.

Ideally at an ozbargain price, but I'd rather quality where I can get a good clear picture any time of day or night if needed.
I don't have fixed broadband internet, but will consider this if required. (I guess for sending live pictures through to phone)
What is the latest set up and recommendations please.
How much should I budget for and expect to pay for a single story, standalone house, with very minimal garden.

Thanks in advance.

You are going to need some form of internet connection or network to view it on your phone. You could get a system that is for local network viewing only, or you could get a system where it streams via the manufacturer's servers.

Personally, I have two of these - https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/ul-tech-cctv-cameras-security-c… - One for my house, one for my garage which is separate to the house. I can access via my phone and I have it streamed to a 42" TV in my office which has a computer connected to it. Stream via the local network.

All depends on what you want to do it and your budget. I just like having eyes around the house whilst I WFH. See when deliveries arrive etc.

That Kogan kit is very low quality by current standards, 1080p=2mp cameras, and the DVR only records at 1080n=1mp @ 12fps…

I'd suggest spending a bit more and look at 4mp kits at a minimum, and aim for POE if you can… (POE=Power Over Ethernet, you only need a network cable going to each camera, it makes it all very easy compared to the old-school analogue cameras, and easy to upgrade your system later because you can just reuse the network cables)

Personally I think quality over quantity, a decent 4 camera setup is a lot better than a low-quality 8 camera setup…

My system is a hodgepodge setup of Dahua NVR's and a variety of cameras so I cant really suggest any kits from personal experience, but I'm sure others will chime in…

I'm not a fan of Reolink (due to having issues with a couple of their cameras), but some of their kits that get advertised on here look ok for the money….

      • I guess it all depends on what you want. I am happy with the small systems I've got just so I have eyes when I am WFH. Not being able to see what's going on outside is kinda annoying when the dog is barking plus it's a deterrent.

I know they are cheap and relatively low quality, but it does the job for what I want. Everyone's use case is different.

  • arlo 4k

    • Do u have this? I’m considering it as my current cams are shit

        I have this.

I think Arlo has a bad rap from when Netgear sold out, but now the cameras are awesome.

Mine has been running flawlessly for 5 years, it saved my house from two incidents.

        • Awesome. Do you mind sharing the type of incident it captured?

What I’m really after is a camera with the best people motion detection so I can set up alerts. My current cams are so shit as they will pickup a car driving past the front of my house but not a person walking past.

@GourmetFoodie: I have a camera set up at the front, aiming towards the garden with a bit of the road in sight.

A couple of teens jumped over the fence at night, one kid went towards the front door, and the other two went towards the side.

The camera detected motion and started recording, the light turned on and what really scared them off was the alarm.

Sent the footage to the cops but of course, they didn't do anything as they haven't entered yet…

            • @MassNerder3r: Thanks for sharing. My cam will capture if someone jumps my fence but not walking past on the sidewalk. Do you think the Arlo will trigger motion from someone just walking past the fence on the sidewalk?

              • @GourmetFoodie: If it's those diamond-shaped steel fences, yes.

If it's a newer slate fence then, no.

Our cameras can pick up cars driving past if we aim them high enough to cover the whole road but they can't detect the postman through our slate fence. There's just not enough visibility/movement to set them off.

                • @MassNerder3r: Thanks so much for the reply. Good point on the fence type! We have a solid rendered brick fence with the only gaps being for the driveway where it is an automatic gate with metal bars and a pedestrian gate with metal bars.

I wonder if our fence is blocking the movement detection on our current setup as though it is capturing the cars, thats because the camera is high up and looking over the fence but the fence is blocking the view of the closer people movement as they walk past?

I would hate to buy the Arlo if the fence just results in the same issue. Maybe I’ll call up their customer service line if they have one locally.

  • It also depends if you want to be alerted to potentially stop a crime, or you want nice HD footage of the crime, and realistically that often doesn't help much
A camera with person detect is good for this situation. it means you can turn alerts on when you wouldn't normally do so such as in the middle of the night

In my experience if you don't have good person detect you'll turn alerts off much of the time due to false alerts from tree's birds, cats etc. A lot of POE systems that use a DVR to detect movement instead of camera itself will detect moving shadows as movement because they are so dumb they are just detecting a change in pixel brightness/colour

  • If you only need a couple of cameras then have Cat5e/Cat6 wired and use POE cameras. Would cost a bit more but would most definitely save you time/hassle over the years vs going WiFi and add value to your house as well.
For budget(but good) residential options the goto would be Dahua/Hikvision cameras and NVRs. If you are not doing DIY then almost all residential CCTV installers have the experience and can supply/install these for a reasonable cost. If you are happy to spend probably 3-5 times Hik prices for better quality and reliability and an App which is a treat to use then you have the unifi protect gear.

If you are on a budget and prefer easy DIY and reasonable performance and on the same time have no issues with considering wireless options then have a look at the Eufy range.

    • if want quality videos then stay away from any wifi+battery systems like ring, eufy, google nest etc.

you need a system like Dahua, Hikvision, Swann connected to a NVRs through a wired POE connection.
      (websterp's comment is correct!)

I'm quite handy and good at DIY, so self install isnt an issue, if that makes any difference to suggestions?

    Thanks in advance

    • Doesn't really make a difference. Just means you could do the cable option over wireless.

I urgently need CCTV cameras that record and have cloud/internet options. But mostly to a hard drive I think.

My front windows smashed last night, after my car was scratched and dented and tyres slashed.

Need something with good night time visuals and facial clarity

    • Wow. That sounds full on. Sorry to hear that you're having to deal with this.

In your situation, I'd be tempted to go with something quick and simple to setup.

Maybe one of the battery/solar powered wifi camera ranges that are available?

The Eufy seem quite popular here and should be available to pick up in bricks-and-mortar stores.

I personally have several of the Reolink cams mounted around the house. Mine are older model Argus 2's so I can't speak to the current range, but mine have been rock solid - if rather no-frills feature wise - for several years.

      • Yep, crazy psycho stalking girl, I unfortunately got involved with and now can't get rid of.
In the interim, the repairs are adding up.
I would like something decent, good facial clarity and good night time vision.
Maybe a hard drive storage would also be good option?

Thinking two at the front, facing each way, one down each side of house and two at the back? So minimum 5, probably 6?

I honestly don't know where to look, or where to start, or what to get

  • Following on from my post as above.

I also need suggestions on front door camera. Recording and voice.

Police suggested I get.one of them fitted too.

    Thankyou

  • Have decided on this ReoLink

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/705062

With a PTZ camera wall mounted, but pointing down the driveway which runs in front of the house before it turns 90deg into the garage.

This hopefully should cover driveway, front door, front side gate all with the PTZ style.
Plus the standard 4 cameras the kit comes with,
1 for each side of the house, 1 at the rear patio of the house and another also at the front.
    So 5 cameras in total.
