Recommendations for Canon 650D Camera Replacement

Hi all

Wanting to replace a Canon EOS 650D (being given away), used primarily for product photography.

Thoughts on any good deals at the moment? This looked good at HN, but the fixed screen is a downgrade from the 650D's swiveling touchscreen.: https://www.harveynorman.com.au/canon-eos-1500d-dslr-camera-…

Also need to get some basic soft boxes…

  • If you prefer to stick to Canon then have a look at EOS M50 Mark II

    • cool thanks! short and sweet.

is the 15-45 lens ok or do I need another lens as well?

      our 650D has a 18-55.

Not sure what exactly these lens focal length numbers mean, but it'll be used mostly for products between 10cm - 1 metre in height

    • I don't necessarily need to stick with Canon, if I understand correctly the 650D's EFS lenses won't work on the M50 MkII anyway right?

  • +1

Woah 650d that takes me back- I remember selling these bad boys purely based on the swivel/tilt screen alone

  • Any particular reason for the give-away or upgrade? Like what do you want to improve on it?

You could put all these funds into things like lighting equipment like soft boxes and find the existing thing is fine then especially for product photography where you have a lot control over the set up, speed, and all that.

    • Perfectly happy with it, but it wasn't mine and I had to give it back.

I do need some simple soft boxes on stands though - any recommendations, or just whatever off ebay/amazon?

  • AliExpress have some good soft boxes, also adaptors for Bowens and Elinchrom if you use those types of powerpacks. Just use the listings that are in the photographic arena, they tend to sell better brands!.

    • Your moniker tells me you know a thing or two hehe

If you don't mind could you link an example softbox off aliexpress that you would buy, if you wanted a simple set?

  • I'm a bit out of date with the entry DSLRs but from memory the 1500d is a class below the 600ds. I would say the 80d could be a good second hand pick up but as others suggested M50 is a good new one to benefit from updated autofocus of mirrorless etc. Depends how you like to shoot too.
