Looking for a Dutch-Style bike

Hi guys,

I am looking to get a bit more physically active and am wanting to buy a Dutch-style bike for leisure/commuting around my suburb and along paved bike trails in Melbourne. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on good brands/bikes in this style.

I have checked out the Lekker Jordaan 3 speed which seems to be what im after, but I am not sure what I should be looking for in terms of specifications to know if it is good value or not. Also there arent many reviews online (https://www.lekkerbikes.com.au/product/jordaan-womens-3-spee…)

Thank you so much in advance!

    • The Kmart version is good if you use it occasionally. Picked one off the verge for my mum and she's happy to use it once a month, they are heavy though, mind you the Lekkers are even heavier.

      Definitely make sure you're not going to be lugging it up hills often, around town though it'll do the job. Used to sell the lekkers and they were bombproof. Changing tyres was a pain though.

      • I’d argue that the additional weight isn’t significant for riding. It’s more likely to be a poor drivetrain that makes a difference.

        Brakes are another big difference in cheap bikes. Cheap brakes aren’t good.

    Nice bike, make life easy, make riding a pleasure & low maintenance. Please don't cheap out if you can afford it

    Things I would look for
    * Internal gears
    * Belt drive (not required but very nice, not black marks on your pants)
    * Cafe Lock
    * Swap the tyres for something that will never go flat (schwalbe marathon plus)

  • They are good in the Netherlands because it’s a very flat country, I wouldn’t get one if you live in a very hilly area.

  • I had a look for Dutch style bikes a while back and all I could find was Lekker - expensive. You can find plenty of cheap step-through frame bikes advertised as ladies bikes or whatever.

    What is it about a Dutch style bike that you like? This is not a Dutch style but it has Nexus 3 speed, good brakes,good frame,good tyres, rack mounts. Only in medium/large size though.

  • He bike linked is quite expensive for a first bike. You’ll probably find similar styled bike in your local bike shop to give you some more options. I bought an Avanti version for $180 a while back with an 8speed internal geared hub. Think it was about $999 rrp.

    You can also search for step-through or ladies bike to increase your responses.

    I’d avoid getting a Kmart bike new. They are poorest quality and often get tossed out after very little use. I’ve picked up several in near new condition in council cleanups, but only for parts then I put the rest back in the pile. You could probably get one for $50 secondnhand without too much wear.
