    Suggested Tesla

Adding the common one as I know people will recommend even with 9-12 months wait time.

Seems like you don't understand the current FEV market.

Unfortunately, only 9-12 months is a pretty short wait time right now.

Thank the Morrison govt for their clever policies that resulted in far fewer electric vehicles being made available in Australia than any other first-world nation.

      • Xi Jinpin has all the cars ready to crush what is left of the ailing Oz economy. But grain hold policy has worked in the past!
Murdoch is just causing brain cancer. His religion wants a puppet to feed him and not the reader!

Tesla is still quoting 9-12 months, but it'll probably be much longer after the Shanghai factory shutdowns.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 2022 release sold out on the day of its release

If you want an electric car soonish, you probably need to look at the used market. There's lots of tesla's for sale at a mere 10k over RRP.

Don't waste your time with a BYD.

    • +3

what's wrong with BYD? is there some controversy or is it just the fact that they are Chinese?

      • +1

        What is even BYD?

        • +1

          Build Your Dreams

        • The 4th biggest vehicle manufacturer in the world by market capitalization
Sells more EV's than Tesla every year.
Currently sitting at 100,000 vehicles a month
Has been around since 1995, though largely in China.

          Not exactly a small startup.

        what's wrong with BYD?

Just a new unproven (imo) player in the Australian market. I'd probably let them settle in for a few years, before buying their cars.

    Camry. Ozbargain car of choice

    • Is there an electric Camry?

      • +3

Hit a pole or tram it may.

      • +1

According to Ozb, driving a Camry could gives you a electrifying feeling.

This article might be a bit out of date but it gives you an idea. You aren't going to get anything quick.

    Elon musk drives a camry

    • Well he definitely doesn’t drive a cyberf*ck, at least in Aus.

    Suggested Outlander PHEV

    Straight EV’s
BYD Atto 3 in red and have it by October (August for other colours)
MG ZS-EV 22MY with the facelift, maybe August/September
    Hyundai Kona
    Kia Niro
Hyundai Ionic (not the Ionic 5)
Maybe, at a pinch, a Polestar for that “euro cred”

  • +1
Suggested Corolla ZR Hybrid and pocket the change

    PHEVs
    Outlander PHEV
    Eclipse Cross PHEV
    MG HS+EV
    Volvo XC40 Recharge PHEV
Maybe a low km, newish BMW 330e if you want that whole eurotrash feeling.

Maybe a low km, newish BMW 330e if you want that whole eurotrash feeling envy badge.

    need it asap

Call up and see which one is available. Shouldn't be a hard one as there ain't many options.

  • +2

If you want anything ASAP these days you will be ripped off.

Wait. Subaru Solterra and Toyota bz4x coming next year.

Maybe put a deposit down on something now if you do need a car.

    • I'd suggest this. Toyota EV fleet is hitting 23/24. Stupid to be buying right now

    • We'll get allocated about 2. Toyota's production capacity is tiny and nearly all of them will be sold in the US. Doubt Subaru can do any better:

      https://www.forbes.com/sites/samabuelsamid/2022/04/12/bz4x-t…

'Toyota is only planning to bring about 7,000 bZ4Xs to the US this year due to supply constraints and plans to ramp up in 2023.'

  • Kmart. Ah its a BYD and wait it has sold out…

    Suggested BYD Atto 3

The BYD was due to be delivered August, wait lists out to October for some colours now though.

Probably the best value EV on the market, so much so that i'm eyeing one off.
Yes it's under your budget at $47k but you can have it in 3 -6 months, else Kia EV would be my other pick

    • I am going to go down to Sydney soon and have another look and a test drive of the Atto 3 when slots for test drives open up. Might do an AMA and post up some photos and videos of the experience.

I have already seen the LHD version in their show room, and from what I have seen so far, it’s a pretty impressive vehicle considering the price point.

Also can’t wait to see what the “independent” motoring journalists think of it once they go an get their mits on one and do a real evaluation.

      • Independent, ‘AKA’ John Cadogon?

    • What do you think of Mercedes’ EQA

      • Would not recommend
The eqc that won wheels car of the year was a joke
I still think some money changed hands for that. I mean you never see them on the roads

        • Why would you not recommend?

          • @bhunter101: $138,000
            320k range…
Tesla and jaguar i-pace had it pipped easily for range and value

Not a lot of selling points
To be honest I can't for the life of me understand who would choose it
Hence why you don't see any on the road
            It was a sham result

            • @Drakesy: Haven’t you seen the badge in the front?thats the bit that will make people buy it.

      • EQA is sux, shitty performance, single motor. Volvo CX40 is way better, infect way better than Tesla (nice to drive and its a SUV).

  • Suggested Polestar 2

    Polestar 2

  • Need it asap!?…..LoL

I think you may have gone back to the future, to a time pre-covid perhaps?

I have a BYD Atto 3 on order with a projected delivery date of August. Is it my dream EV , no but it gets me into the suv/ev market and who knows when I will be able to order or take delivery of a Tesla Model Y.
For those who havent heard of BYD and want to neg it, how may of your sphere of influence have never heard of Xiaomi, yet it is currently listed as the worlds biggest smart phone manufacturer ,Dreame, Mi Robot Vac,Redmi ,70 Mai,I could go on.
Legacy auto makers are asleep at the wheel and having to arrange joint venures with chinese ev manufacturers,to keep pace with the growth of ev's, think BMW/ Great Wall/Ora, and BYD/Toyota.

    • I like all the “cHiNa cAr BaD” crowd saying thing like “BYD is only a new company” or “just another rubbish Chinese brand” without knowing how big BYD actually is and just how much they produce and who they are already supplying for.

I’ve seen the Atto 3 and the Dolphin in the Sydney showroom and I was very impressed by both. And you are right, all the big manufacturers are asleep at the wheel while companies like BYD and MG are going to start mauling EV sales and by the time the others wake up, their market share will already be too far behind.

Hyundai and Kia need to get their shit together and get back to doing what they do best, and that is making affordable cars for average motorists within their EV range and stop churning out these $80k+ super cars wannabe EV’s or cars like the Ora and Dolphin are going to beat them to it.

      • What do you guys think of EQA? How does it compare with MG and BYD?

        • You are comparing an overpriced, under performing, envy badged Euro shitbox with cheap, affordable, no frills Chinese brands. It's a bit like asking to compare an A200 with an i30. They are aimed at different people.

If you so desperately want that Euro cred "brand snobbery" for your wife's child delivery bus so the she fits in with all the other moms at the school gate, then buy the EQA. If you just need transport to get her too and from school and want to save $30k~ish, then look at MG or BYD.

@pegaxs.But,but did not Kia get the Wheels ‘car of the year’ award for a car you cannot even purchase? What a joke!

        • did not Kia get the Wheels ‘car of the year’ award for a car you cannot even purchase?

The other ones I like are the motoring press telling us all with their "best EV's to buy right now" articles and they start listing unobtanium models like the EV6, the Ionic 5, Tesla Model 3, VW I.Q., Polestar or giving rave reviews for vehicles that manufactueres have already said "Yeah, nah, not for Australia until 2025+"

          • @pegaxs: Wheels mag is so irrelevant it’s not funny.I will never understand their ‘car of the year’ award. The amount of times they give it some car, that many just cannot afford.Wholeheartedly agree in what you are saying.

      • Hyundai and Kia need to get their shit together and get back to doing what they do best, and that is making affordable cars for average motorists within their EV range and stop churning out these $80k+ super cars wannabe EV’s or cars like the Ora and Dolphin are going to beat them to it.

Totally agree. Although I suspect they are fulfilling orders elsewhere in the world while our backwards arse government keeps promoting ICE models and the manufacturers can keep sending us cheap dinosaur designs.

  • You're about 6 months too late for 'ASAP'. Back then Tesla had local inventory available for immediate delivery, and you may have had a chance to jump on the IONIQ5/EV6/Polestar preorder.

As others have suggested, BYD or MG ZS are the only viable options. I have heard a rumour that Polestar may have a few units available, maybe give them a call.

  • Go to Norway. Over 80% of new cars sold are EV. There will be a much better range there.

There’s so few models in Aus it’ll take about half a day to test drive everything available and make up your own mind.

    • Different government policies & subsidies though.

      • Yes, the right ones.

        https://youtu.be/OJtzuZIO-88

One of the things noticed in this video was how much quieter the streets are. EV means No fumes and no engine noise for road side cafes.

  • The EQA is not a true EV as it is not built on an EV platform. Merc have simply dropped an electric motor into an ICE car jammed some batteries into the back and flogged it off as an EV.
Try sitting in the back seat, they have had to raise the rear floor so high to accommodate the battery your knees will be around your chin.Only a badge snob would consider it.

    • How is it not a true EV if it is powered by batteries and an electric motor?

It’s an EV. Is it a good one? Probably not because of it’s compromised design but it is an EV.

  • -1

A true ev sits on an ev platform with all the benefits that provides.
A dedicated EV platform allows a flat floor in the interior of the car and lengthening of the wheelbase because less space is required for the “engine compartment”. This in turn boosts the room inside an electric vehicle, allowing compact cars to offer space comparable to bigger cars.

    • It’s an EV. A poorly designed EV. There’s nothing stopping a ground up design of EV from being a bad design.
