Warm - thermal/wool etc clothes?

Hi guys, I wanna ask you on your experiences with different types of warm clothes - wool, synthetic fabrics etc - what is the best? And also if you know about some good place to buy it for ideally bargain price :)

  • merino wool is my pick!
    icebreaker is my favourite brand.
    However they are not cheap

    http://www.natureshop.com/Support/SelectCountry
is great when they have special deals

    http://www.bivouac.co.nz/
have clearance on limited range of icebreakers

  • thanks, yea I already found out some pretty good reviews on Icebreaker… looks like good spent money. And from natural material which is even better

  • Down is the warmest. Warmer than feather or wool or synthetics. However is no good if it gets wet. see http://www.doc.ic.ac.uk/~kpt/terraquest/va/expedition/equipm…

What are you wanting them for? Outdoors, indoors, wet wetaher, sleeping?

In winter, I have a bottom sheet on the bed and put a fleece blanket over it. I sleep under a fleece blanket, preferably one of the "coral fleece" or mink ones. Other blankets on top of that to weigh it down and keep a draft off of me. Do not sleep against sheets in the winter. They do not allow the heat fully through. So you are encased in fleece and will likely get quite warm even in a house with no heating and drafts.

    • Fleece needs to be the polar fleece, not some wool look alike.

My ex BF only had wool blankets. My fleece ones were and are much warmer. Some nights he would out 4 or 5. I could have been warmer with three lightweight fleece ones. It is better to have something heavier on top in my experience.

    The best approach is layering.
if it is really cold, start with long underwear.
Polypropylene for outdoors/active use. Cotton blend if you don't plan to exercise.

And from natural material which is even better

Maybe for walking between car and heated building. But the guys climbing mountains will have all synthetic.

  • I'm wearing genuine sheepskin boots, corduroy (spelling?) pants, 100% cotton flannelette shirt, and wool jumper. Our house is like a freezer - 1950s fibro with no carpet on the floorboards - and I'm… bearably warm for a change.

I can't wear synthetics now. They irritate my skin too much. But even when I could, they trapped in sweat - whereas cotton and wool seem to allow air through or something, so the moisture doesn't build up. As a test - get into bed on a cold day with synthetics on. You'll probably soon be in a cold sweat and soaked wearing the synthetics, but just too hot wearing naturals.

I only mentioned my own skin problems, because it can apparently suddenly happen to anyone. (Unable to wear them.) So if you're planning on investing lots in synthetic clothing - beware you could be one of the people that start having a reaction and then not be able to wear any of it. :-(
