Best Combo Fishing Rod and Reel

Hi just looking a good bang for your buck rod and reel combo for father in law who's staying for a few months from overseas and something to keep him occupied and out of the house and I could maybe use when use when's he's gone for a couple of years would be great.

Would be for using in the Swan river Perth and some off he rocks or Pier fishing aswel. Havnt fished in about 30years myself from as a kid so not sure what's the best equipment too use or stores too look.

Budget would be $500 total max tho not sure what that even gets me for that price!
Any ideas most welcome!

Why dont you take him with you to the store and let him pick what he wants, $500 is alot of money to waste on something he may not want.

Exactly. He might prefer a BCF Esky and 10 slabs to fill in his time.

  • You can get a super rod from fisherman on route 12

    • Is that some dogging spot!

  • $500 is a lot more than you need to spend for a 'best bang for your buck' type setup - it's getting more into serious enthusiast territory, especially fishing in the swan or on the jetties and beaches around Perth. You do not need expensive equipment. You're going to be targeting fish like flathead, herring, tailor, and bream - none of which are going to be bigger than 3kg. I fish in the swan and use setups in the $100-$200 range which are good quality basic gear.

Any rod in the 3-5kg range and around 7ft, any spinning reel in the 3000-4000 range will be fine for a range of situations. If you wanted to focus more on beach fishing then you could go for a slightly longer and heavier rod.

You can go to the big box shops like BCF and Anaconda where you may be able to pick up on a bargain if something is on sale, or else go to a local specialist fishing store where prices may be a bit higher but you will get proper advice.

    • Cheers ,thanks for the great advice πŸ™ŒπŸ™ŒπŸ™Œ,any specialist shops you recommend? We are towards Guildford area but would travel anywhere

      • These guys have been pretty helpful to me, they have a shop in Myaree and one in Joondalup https://www.tackleworld.com.au/all-stores/

You can also check out the http://fishwrecked.com/ forum, it's an old website and in dire need of an overhaul but still has some good tips.

      • Another thing - the swan river is heavily populated by blowfish, so fishing with bait is usually just a waste of time and money. I prefer to use hard lures, which can cost around $20 each. So have a bit of room in your budget for a few hard body lures with different characteristics for targeting different fish. Talk to the staff at any fishing shop and get some advice on which lures to use.

        • Brilliant mate.πŸ™Œ , Would u get decent fish up as far as Guildford, or would you head more .city and freo direction?

          • @Francis82: Not sure, I live down near freo so I fish there. I know people fish up towards Maylands though, and I think as you go further up the river there will be bream which can survive in relatively fresh water, but not sure about other fish. It would also depend on the time of year and the amount of rainfall which would affect the salinity of the river in the upper reaches.

    • Cheersmany thanks!

  • For a good cheap reel, can recommend Shimano sienna range. Mine has not been treated kindly over the years, and lasted much better than more expensive reels of other brands.

BCF often has these on special with a rod, get the rod that suits the style of fishing he will do. Normally around $120 for both I think.

  • Awesome ,cheersmany thanks!

  • Alvey Reels in Brisbane are actually closing after 102 years. I believe part of the problem with their business is just how good the reels are as people don't need to replace them.

Maybe get him one of them as they won't be around much longer and people swear by them. Spare parts will continue to be available from selected suppliers.

    • Cheers thank you

  • I just picked up a shimano beastmaster rod 2-5kg $35 and a shimano Sahara 2500 reel $80 from BCF, good combo for anything your likely to catch land based

    • Many thanks will look it up πŸ™Œ

  • You can't/shouldn't get a rod/reel combo with the intention to fish lake, estuary, AND rocks! Well you can but you wouldn't throw $500 at it. You can get 2-3 outfits for each situation. I would just start with a Shimano 2500 + 6.5/7 foot that is a bit 'tippy' and target estuary. Spend the rest on actual gear! Have you seen the prices for lures these days. You wont get change out of $100 for 3 or 4 decent lures. Depends what you are targeting though. I'd spend $150 on the reel, $120 on the rod, $150 on bag, tackle and a few lures. Do you need a fishing license in WA?? ..presumably you do. There's your $500 gone.

Not for shore fishing in salt water, only for boat fishing or freswater fishing.
