Samsung HW-Q990B/XY 11.1.4 Channel Soundbar $1469 (was $1439) Delivered (RRP $2099) @ Catch

330

Update 27/05: Checked link again today. Looks like 5 more available with slight price increase to $1469. Curious sales tactic.

It's worth checking out @Mandalorians comment below. If you have eBay Plus, you can get it cheaper.

First time posting a deal, apologies for any errors.

Found the 2022 Samsung Q990B Soundbar at a lower price than usual for new releases with free shipping. Page says that it leaves warehouse in 5 business days. I'm a bit wary of Catch regarding warranty but other than that, it seems legit.

Pulled the trigger yesterday when there were 3 in stock, link no longer resolved after all sold (i know, it's most probably a sales tactic). Page is back up today and says 5 in stock at time of submitting this post.

Updated aesthetic to last years q950A.

    $1429 at powerland

    • 1419

      • This is true, however I bought from Catch with Shopback cashback and it works out lower then 1419.

    • thanks, ordered from powerland for $1419! :D

    • $1449 now

  • Bought it last night as well. Got the last one from that lot.
Free shipping is pretty sweet too.

  • +1

Thanks OP, I sniped this one up! Was looking at LG S95QR yesterday for $1799 but luckily I held out.

This one seems like a great price considering it's not even out yet.

Edit: Don't forget Cashrewards. I got $30 tracked.

    • Where did you find it for 1799 ?

    • +1

Your welcome. Good to hear the post helped someone out. Just got my shipping notice so yours probably won't be far away.

    • +2

dodged a bullet with the LG, I have an SN11RG (flagship from ~2 years ago), nothing but problems.

  • Is the display still on top or have they fixed it and it's at the front? Can't see the display in any of the links…

    • +1

Yes it is fixed and on the front.

  • wonder when jb hifi will have stock and if they can price match

  • Great soundbar - if only I had power points at the back…

  • looks like its gone

  • This is 2022 model with Atmos and no cloth cover over speaker?

    • correct
which one is better? 2021 one with cloth cover or 2022 without it?

      • Without cloth. Cloth collects hair and dust. And cats like the cloth to sharpen claws on

    • is there any other difference in 2021 this this model?

      • +1

not much real performance difference from the reviews I read.
Personally I don't care about wireless subwoofer and LED direction.
Mental finish looks better but not sure how to clean it because a lot of holes on top.
My LG SN10YG collects a lot of dust over time, but very easy to clean on its top plain panel

      • +2

the sub is supposed to be better/stronger

  • 2021 Q950a went down to about $1250 around middle last year.
Hopefully some more deals in next month when more stocks available.

    • +1

I got the Q950a delivered for $1074.10 from Appliances Online in Feb this year. All I have is praise for it. It took my home movie/tv experience to the next level and bonus it came with Chromecast Audio built in.

  • Hey guys the link won’t open

    • Looks like its out of stock.

  • I bought from power land for $1419.

  • +1

Would this pair well with a LG c1tv ? Anyone any issues with the previous model also pairing with the C1?
Just wondering as the older one is rated higher than the best LG sound bar sp11 Ra off the top of my head and looking something decent to compliment the tv and ps5 also

    • I've got the Q950A and it does not have HDMI 2.1. It also doesn't allow audio pass through the C1. So you won't get 120 HZ AND maximum audio quality.

      • Can you please expand on this? Isn't it the same if we connect everything to the TV and then the TV to the soundbar via eARC?
I have G1 and Xbox Series X so will want best possible sound on everything if I buy this.

        • +1

Yes you just plug the soundbar into eArc and Xbox onto another 2.1 port. Passthrough would only be necessary if you didn't have other 2.1 ports. Luckily you bought an LG and not a Sony in this instance

          • +2

@jtlaus: Hey, so unless there's been an update, Samsung Soundbar and LG TV's don't play well with each other and you either have dolbt atmos with sound delay or audio pass through but no Dolby atmos. They talk about it here:

            https://www.reddit.com/r/Soundbars/comments/qngwv0/samsung_q…

            • @energyryu: Can't say as I have no experience yet, but the Samsung website suggests eARC is compatible for Dolby Atmos and the soundbar tuning app, as well as LG tv have audio sync functionality

              • +1

@jtlaus: Yeah, based on the spec sheet it should all work. Unfortunately, the real-world experience was disappointing that you can't get full 4K/120 Hz AND Dolby Atmos without audio delays. You either sacrifice one or the other. This only matters if you want the full functionality of everything at the same time. I'm very happy with my C1 + Q950A setup. Most games don't run at 4K/120Hz anyway so it's a minimal issue just not ideal.

                • @energyryu: I'm still trying to understand what doesn't work. I can't get the best audio if I'm playing on 4K/120Hz? Agreed it doesn't matter now but if I spend $1400 on a soundbar now, I want it to work perfectly for 10 years at least.

Would the LG soundbar do everything when paired with G1?

                  • +3

@theory: Sorry if I was not clear. The Q950A doesn't have HDMI 2.1. In order to get the full 4K/120Hz from your Xbox, you need HDMI 2.1 so you can't plug directly into the Q950A for full 4K/120Hz as it lacks HDMI 2.1.

Theoretically, you should be able to plug your Xbox into the LG C1 which does have HDMI 2.1, and connect your Q950A to the E-ARC on the C1, enable audio pass-through, and Dolby Atmos functionality "should" work. However, in real-world use, there is an audio delay when the signal comes from the Xbox through the C1 to the Q950A.

                    So you have two options:

                    1. Plug your Xbox directly into the Q950A and lose the 4K/120Hz functionality since the Q950A does not have HDMI 2.1

                    or

                    1. Plug your Xbox to the TV and lose Dolby Atmos functionality as the audio passthrough does not work properly.

From what I've read, its an LG TV and Samsung Soundbar incompatibility issue. I believe Samsung TV and Samsung Soundbars work and LG TV and LG Soundbars work. I haven't really researched this as I bought my C1 and Q950A before realising this issue.

Like I said before, it's not THAT big of a deal, but kind of sucks given that the C1 and Q950A were highly recommended at the time yet I can't get maximum functionality out of them.

My solution has been to have a NVIDIA Shield Pro 2019 plugged into my Q950A directly for Dolby Atmos movies. And Xbox X to the TV for 4K/120Hz gaming. I don't mind not having Dolby Atmos gaming.

Hope that clears it up. Otherwise there's way more info on reddit:

                    https://www.reddit.com/r/Soundbars/comments/rcogmv/q950a_wit…

                    • @energyryu: Thank you so much for taking the time to properly explain all of that to me!

I am in the same boat, wanted the best TV and soundbar, so bought the G1 and have been looking at the high end Samsung soundbars as they are supposed to be the best.

I also read that whole Reddit thread that which was also very useful.

So now I wonder if I should wait until Samsung/Xbox fix this issue or do I go for the high end LG soundbar instead?

Looks like this is top of the line at the moment - https://www.lg.com/us/sound-bars/lg-s95qr

Assume this should do both 4K/120 and Atmos at the same time.

                      • @theory: New lg looks to have plenty off all-round specs ! Might wait for this one! Havnt a clue if no hd10+ is important tho!

                        • @Francis82: Hmm good spotting… will need to do more research.

                      • +1

@theory: 4K120 HDR passthrough is not supported. It only has HDMI 2.0 ports

                        • @musclewarrior: Ah damn, so are there any soundbars out yet that do everything?

Edit: Did some Googling, so far have found Klipsch Cinema 1200/Cinema 800, Sony HT-A7000 and Sony HT-A9.
Edit 2: No VRR/ALLM yet though, so still no soundbar that does everything!

                          • +1

@theory: Klipsch 1200 is plagued by software and firmware bugs. Was my plan to buy before settling for this Samsung

                          • +1

@theory: Nope, without going to a full receiver, almost every sound bar falls short somewhere.

                            Klipsch wont decode DTS
I think your best bet is the Sony - I'm pretty sure that is HDMI 2.1

                            • @musclewarrior: Wow, think it's time I started looking at a good old receiver set up.

Any chance you have any recommendations in this area? Thanks heaps for all your help so far by the way.

                    • +1

@energyryu: The issue looks like has been fixed in 2022 q990b

                      See below
"But most importantly, Samsung finally "FIX" Dolby Atmos(Dolby MAT 2.1/2.0) eArc Passthrough issue on this year's products. I've tested LG C1+Q990B+Xbox Series X combo and it works flawlessly."

                      https://www.avforums.com/threads/samsung-hw-q990b-11-1-4-sou…

                      • @Mandalorians: Oh interesting, but then they also say:
"Dolby Atmos Home Theater audio delay on Q990B sounds no difference compare to Klipsch Cinema 800, Sony HT-X8500 soundbar. It's acceptable. To me, It doesn't affect my gameplay experience. (Whether you're using PC or Xbox, there's no way to completely fix Dolby Atmos Home Theater audio delay even you're using an AV Receiver."
                        Even more confused now haha

                        • +1

@theory: Samsung fixed compability issue on Samsung sound bar end, so they can have a correct handshake per design. Previously it was 1/4 to 1/2 second delay.
But there is no way to completely remove the delay because it's how it works for eArc, around 50ms delay when signal passing through TV to soundbar via eArc. And all sound bars and all TV brands have such delay as long as using current eARC standard.
For gaming, xbox also add processing delay when xbox processing sound, which is larger than film becausing gaming sound is more dynamic.

                          • @Mandalorians: Thanks, but yeah the comment said it's the same for an AV receiver. Might be worth waiting a couple years before buying a sound setup.

                            • +1

@theory: Hdmi 2.1 should come for next year models, TV>sound bar>xbox will eliminate the eArc delay. But current 50ms is acceptable any way.

Is it better to get this or an actual 5.1 receiver setup?

    • if space & cables are no issue then a proper 5.1.4 can't be beaten

      • What is the 4 at the end of 5.1 for?

        • 4 speakers above you.

    • There are too many variables within your question.

You're asking us to compare a 5.1 receiver setup without knowing the contents of the speakers and/or receiver against a soundbar that is giving 11.1.4. You'd want a receiver that was about 9.1.2.

If you have the space, then a receiver set-up is always going to sound better.

  • Are people buying a stand for the rear speakers and which one if you don't mind sharing

    • Did you manage to find a suitable stand for the rear speakers?

    • +2

I ordered these ones to go with it as they seem to get good reviews for the previous model

      https://www.amazon.com.au/Sanus-Adjustable-Height-Speaker-St…

    • +1

I bought the Mounting Dream MD5402 speaker stands - https://www.amazon.com.au/Mounting-Dream-Bookshelf-Universal…. I haven't received the Q990B yet to test that they fit the stands, but people have successfully used them with the Q950A rear speakers, and I reached out to Mounting Dream customer support who confirmed that they should work with the Q990B rear speakers too (which are different from the Q950A rear speakers).

      • Hi, did the Q990B rear speakers fit onto these Mounting Dream stands ok? Are you placing the stands hard up against the back wall, or is there some space between the wall and stands?

  • You should be careful shopping on Catch, they regularly refuse to do returns, even if the product they send is faulty or nothing like the pictures or description. You can lose a lot of money on that website.

  • Has anyone who ordered from Powerland received their order? I ordered May 26 and have heard nothing. I have emailed them about it. Cheers

    • +1

My order says between June 15th to 21st June delivery

      • Thanks, I may call them and see what is going on. Cheers

        • +2

I called and they said that stock was allocated very quickly so it looks like a week or two longer which is not a big deal. Of more importance is the lack of communication from Powerland.

If I am being cynical I suspect they fulfilled the Ebay sales to gather positive feedback at the expense of direct online orders. This is pure speculation of course.

  • I bought one from Ebay sales Powerland, Says arriving by 21st June, has not been posted yet. They might be waiting for more stock to arrive.

    • +2

They emailed me that they oversold their stock, more arriving next week. Cheers

      • I received mine today and set it up with no issues apart from not registering with the Smartthings app, Smartthings saw the soundbar but failed at the last step. Very limited testing so far but so far so good. Have not tested Atmos but surround sound effects were very good, sound is very clear and brutally loud when pushed. I have a 5.1.2 system that I am wanting to downsize from and this looks like it will do the trick. More testing tonight.

        • What are your thoughts now that you've had it for a week, especially compared to your 5.1 setup?

          • +2

@elektron: First thing I learned was to turn off adaptive sound and set it to standard. The sound then is more balanced and much more like what I was used to. Stereo music playback is very average and I may look for a different solution just for that. I rate my Google Home Maxes in a stereo pair as better than the soundbar but for movies it really gets the job done. I have rarely had the volume over 15, it is really loud but composed as well, does not sound harsh at all. We watched Eternals recently (awful movie) but the soundtrack in Atmos was excellent, the sound has real impact.

The soundbar really creates an enveloping experience even in 5.1 with the rear speakers with 3 speakers in each there is a real continuity of sound from the front to the rears. As an old guy it is hard to believe so much good sound comes from such a small package, compared to the 5.1.2 system.

It is a very well matched system and for the price I think it would suit a lot of people. I was wanting to go 5.1.4 with my old system and the cost of the required AVR upgrade alone precluded that.

btw it did eventually connect to Smartthings and then the Chromecast functionality became available too.

All in all, we are happy with it and will be selling the 5.1.2 system, understanding that we are getting 'good enough' sound in exchange for a clutter free living room.

            Hope that helps. Cheers

            • +1

@wombat_58: Thanks for the detailed write-up - much appreciated. It looks like your impressions aren't quite as glowing as those of the professional reviewers out their, also some also noted that it's not great for stereo music playback.

              • +1

@elektron: Perhaps reviewers are comparing it to other soundbars whereas I am comparing with a full fat 5.1.2 system. My system was a Yamaha Aventage RX-A1070, Mission speakers front and rear, LSK centre, Sony Atmos speakers and an SVS PB2000 sub.

The soundbar holds up pretty well given the limitations of size and form factor.

We are happy enough for the price given a new 9.2 AV receiver would have cost $1,000 more than the soundbar.

                Cheers

                • @wombat_58: That actually makes a lot of sense. Year's ago, I'd built 9.1 with an Aventage RX-A3010, 9 Wharfedale speakers (including 5 Opus 2's - possibly the best they've ever made, and even a couple of in-ceiling side-surrounds) and a 350 watt Hsu Research sub (an overkill even for a large room).

Then I had to move to downsize and got a Sony HT-Z9RF - one of the very first Atmos soundbars, with wireless rears and sub. While it may not have the same impact and the sense of space as my previous monster set up, I still find it very enjoyable. What's even more surpising is that it, does a great job with music. Despite a lot of DSP, it's quite natural sounding and is actually more "honest" than my Focal Elear headphones (I stream hi-res tracks from Tidal), while still having a full sound with excellent instrument separation and a sense of space. The Sony is a 2018 model and I can't help but wonder how it would compare for movies with this Samsung, which appears to be the new king of consumer soundbars.

                  • @elektron: I would like better stereo music playback and may do something about that if it bothers me enough. I took a chance on the soundbar without an audition and am glad I did. Movies are its forte, I really do not need more. I will try it this weekend with some 4k disc content.

                    • @wombat_58: I'm sure you'll notice a difference between streaming and disc content audio quality. I've watched the Revenant on both (on the Sony) and the difference was more than I had anticipated. Would be interesting to know what your impressions are with the Samsung.

                      • +1

@elektron: Did some more listening with a couple 4k disks, Blade Runner 2049 and Ford vs Ferrari. The sound is very good, certainly good enough for us with such a small footprint. The ATMOS effects were excellent. The sound when the volume is turned up a little is absolutely thunderous. I am not sure what kind of witchcraft is used but it works very well. We also tried some more music and I am not sure I will ever be totally happy with it but for background listening it will be fine. Cheers

                        • +1

@wombat_58: Thank you for the additional feedback. Just as well it's overwhelmingly positive, as I finally pulled the trigger and ordered it yesterday. Couldn't resist the $1,224 price from the current Samsung multistore deal (my employer has a partnership with Samsung).

                          • +1

@elektron: Very good price for what you get, I am sure you will be happy with it. Cheers

                            • @wombat_58: Just to add - my use is about 90% movies an TV series and only about 10% music. While my Sony soundbar excels with music, I do most of my listening in hi-end headphones (wireless as well as wired)

I can't get my hands on the Samsung kit next week to experience some of that immersive and thunderous sound that you speak of.

@elektron: I will look forward to your feedback. Cheers

@wombat_58: Just a quick follow up re the music playback. The soundbar sounds fine with hard rock or metal but the closer you get to acoustic music it sounds worse. For comparison I have an old 2 channel amp connected to a pair of Mission floorstanding speakers and streamed the same music to both using the built in Chromecast on the soundbar and a Chromecast Audio connected to the amplifier. Acoustic music (Latin, flamenco etc) sounded far better on the amp/Mission combo but there was not a lot in it with heavier music. I suspect the sub helped with heavier music. Hope that helps. Cheers

@wombat_58: Thanks for the update. What you're saying makes sense. I would also expect mordern pop, EDM and RnB to sound decent thanks to the sub and the high compression levels for these types of recordings.

Unfortunately, my delivery date has shifted till next week…

  • I was able to price match and pick it up from jbhifi which had stock. Stocks are super low. Parramatta had 2 of which I took 2. Not sure about other stores

    • Grrrrrrr, had to go to Castle Hill because of you!

      Well played, well played. 😉

  • Just priced matched at JBHifi with Powerland for $1449. Received link and need to make payment and collect now.
Now just waiting on a good deal on a 85" to upgrade my 65".
