Data Only Sim for Carplay

Ive got an old phone I want to use as a dedicated Carplay device rather than hammer my daily (flattens quickly without constant charging)

Use of maps and spotify mainly. Current data usage on my daily doesn't often go above 15gb including YouTube and web usage.

Looking for a Telstra based cheap data sim for the car.

Any ideas?

Why don’t you use wired CarPlay, then battery isn’t an issue?

And charges the phone while using!

  • Maybe one of those family data sharing plans?

  • Belong $15/mth if you're not discipline with your data. Otherwise any 12 months prepared plan with 180GB for less than $180… However the closest I find for latter is Amaysim 165GB for $200 with $35 cashback from say Shopback.

  • If you shop at Woolies, the Woolies mobile long life plans are worth taking a look at -> for the 100gb/$150 a year plan, I make sure I spend $150 a month at Woolies.. with 10% off a shop per month that's effectively $15 back every month which pays for my mobile plan :)

(being an ozbargainer of course I use referrals and wait til the plan goes on special for extra savings :) )

(actually if I really was a true ozbargainer I would grab a 3090 and mine eth to make it even cheaper)

Well all the 3x big telcos have the lowest plans with 5gb data for $15 per month and speeds capped at 1.5Mbps when allocated data runs out, Optus had their data plans at half price no contracts for 12 months, advertised through their Optus app, though I don't see it anymore but Optus offers this half price deal frequently, so keep an eye out for it too pop up again, I use Optus data $15 5gb plan (costing me $7.50 a month) for my home internet too keep my Fetch boxes active, long downloading sessions and actually so I don't use my main phones calls/data plan as it's only 100gb of data, I think its reasonable at 1.5Mbps speeds I actually use it for streaming video both on my phone and Fetch boxes and when it's capped at 1.5Mbps speeds and its fine not perfect but at $7.50 per month im very happy, audio streaming would certainly not be an issue for you

The whole point about these plans there unlimited and tied with a cheap mobile phone (wifi hot spotting) or cheap 4G portable wifi modem can be used at home or anywhere, the Optus half price deal would just be a bonus

    • Thanks the Telstra one will hit the mark. I'll be able to share data across the data sim and my mobile sim too.

      • Why don't you just plug your current phone into the car?

This spare phone will need to be charged too - if you are leaving it in the car as a dedicated car play device the only logical time to be charging it is when you're driving it. So it will be plugged in while you are driving anyway. So why not just use your current phone if you are going to be plugging it in anyway?!

If you charge the spare phone in the house so that you don't have to plug it in in the car that is a lot of hassle to remember to also bring out the spare phone when you go out driving. Chances are you'll probably forget it regularly or it will be flat when you go to use it and you have to either wait 5 minutes in your driveway for the car to charge it enough that it is willing to turn on, or, take off while it is charging and not get to use it at all on the drive (given you have to unlock it for car play to be usable, you might be able to if you get a few seconds at a red light then use Siri to do what you want with it).

Way way more hassle than it is worth plus it will cost you more - seems like an absolute no-brainer to just plug in your regular phone.

(Are you actually intending to stalk someone by leaving a phone in their car and then using Find My? That would make your request more logical at least….)
